  3. 4.5 Tatanka: Story of the Bison (449 reviews)
    - Amazing
Saturday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
Tatanka: Story of the Bison image
We stopped at Tatanka, Story of the Bison and found it very impressive. We watched the short film and found it interesting. The fact that when the railroads came to the west, people shot them from the trains and almost made them extinct in a short period of time. Very sad , so I’m glad this story was told and how they have come back with the help of concerned Americans. They are truly majestic . There was a lady at the museum who talked about how the Indian used every part of the bison to live. The fee to get in is not much . They do have a senior fee. Kevin Costner receives no money and much of it goes for the upkeep of the museum and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation which is extremely poor. We could not get to the reservation due to COVID. Drive through Custer State Park and the Badlands and enjoy the beauty of these amazing animals. Also admire the awesome sculptures in the back. Well worth the money and trip. See more..
  4. 5.0 Dignity (360 reviews)
    - AMAZING WORK OF ART
    Saturday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
    Dignity image
I was traveling east on Interstate 90 and decided to make a quick stop at the South Dakota Rest Area on the east side of the Missouri River near Chamberlain, South Dakota. In addition to having all the typical rest stop amenities, like clear rest rooms, picnic area and vending machines. In addition to having a small museum dedicated to the Lewis and Clark Exposition, the center piece of this rest area is the amazing Dignity Statue. While the statue is visible from Interstate 90, I highly recommend that you take time to stop and view this amazing work of art close up. In talking to a member of the rest area staff, I found out that this impressive work of art is relatively new having been dedicated in 2016. It stands 50 feet tall and is 32 feet wide. Be sure to visit the small museum inside the rest area and take time to enjoy the views of the Missouri River. This is a great place to stop and stretch your legs. See more..

  7. 4.5 Mt Roosevelt Monument (198 reviews)
    - Theodore Roosevelt Friendship Tower Memorial
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
    Mt Roosevelt Monument image
This was called the Roosevelt Friendship Tower. It was built by a gentleman in honor of his 35-year friendship with Theodore Roosevelt just after Roosevelt's death. It may seem simple to some, but we thoroughly enjoyed seeing it. There's a short, easy hike to get to the tower and behind the tower is a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. We even climbed the small, winding staircase to stand atop of the tower for additional views. It's in beautiful condition. A nice stop over on your way to or from the Town of Deadwood. See more..

Drove past this place last year, and didn't have time to stop. Glad we took the time to stop here this year!! Worth the $10 per adult, $5 Ages 13-17, Ages 12 & under Free (at the time). Nice place to get out and stretch your legs after being crowded into the car for hours. Artist and owner met us upon arrival and was super friendly and willing to talk about all the sculptures. Great photo opportunities, interesting unique sculptures, & poetry to go with the art work. Where else are you going to see a 60 ft bull head, fish bowl you can stand in and the large I would recommend to anyone to take the extra time, about an hour out of your trip to explore. See more..

    Fighting Stallions Memorial image
I'm old enough to remember when Governor Mickelson and others were killed in a plane crash. The story goes that the Fighting Stallions statue was on his desk at the time of his death and it was replicated for this memorial. It's a beautiful tribute. It is found on the grounds next to the Capitol. See more..

If you enjoyed the movie The Revenant or other movies about Hugh Glass, this is an historical must see. It is off the beaten path down a dirt road and overlooks the lake. The memorial references the location of the bear attack, the fork of the Grand River. The landscape is different than the movie, no forest, just prairie. An incredible story of survival. See more..
  20. 5.0 Walleye Up (1 review)
    - One of the most unique sculptures I've seen on our travels.
    Saturday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Monuments & Statues
    Walleye Up image
My wife and I love seeing sculptures and statues wherever we go, and the U.S. has plenty of them. But this particular sculpture is truly different. It is of a cowboy bronco busting a giant walleye fish! It's right near a park along the Missouri River. It's also easy to find. Turn south on Main Street in Mobridge, South Dakota. After passing through a small business district, it becomes Park Boulevard. In a curve is the statue. You really can't miss it. There is nothing else around it. A parking lot is nearby, and there is a stockyard to the east. See more..
