   The Yellow Mounds are stunning. This area of the park is the most beautiful and the place to be as the landscape begins to change and wildlife begins to want to hang out more. Be sure to make a special trip to be around the Mounds in the evening to get some fantastic sunset pics and see the wildlife coming out and about. Great area! See more..

   This is one of the most visited overlooks in the park and absolutely worth the visit, at least one time during the day. it changes dramatically depending on the time of the day it is. There are several overlooks here as well as the chance to walk a short trail out to another viewpoint. The eroded cliffs seem whiter, and there’s a lot more plant life here as well. Those trees are Junipers, which provide an important refuge for the park’s bird population. See more..

   We made the steep, narrow, curvy, gravelly drive up to the Mount Coolidge fire tower (at just over 6,000 feet elevation). The views are incredible in all directions. Be sure to look toward the Crazy Horse Memorial with binoculars--the carved face of the great Lakota leader will be looking right at you! I highly recommend a visit. See more..

   There are no rock formations to see here, but this was still one of my favorite stops along the Loop Road. Very cleverly, the National Park Service constructed a 400-foot-long boarded walkway that leads from the parking lot to a point surrounded by prairie grass. Not many people stop here so I rejoiced in the solitude of being in the middle of the grass expanse. See more..

   My friend, who was our guide, made sure we stopped by her "secret stop." It's not really a secret, but it's a road less traveled, which makes it even more lovely. It's a simple path to a viewing area, with a few picnic tables, etc. It's just a beautiful place. See more..
