Omgeven door bossen en heide met uitgestrekte fietsroutes, een ideale plaats om even tot rust te komen in een prachtige parkachtige tuin. molen van Frans image
After the disappointing visit to ‘Molen van Bels’ we walked to the ‘Molen van Frans’, a nice 10 min walk. This mill is operational and it is very interesting to have a look inside the mill. They grind corn, show how to make paper and there is lots to read about the history of this mill. Great place and really worth a visit See more..
  8. 4.0 Het Bloemenbeek Monument (8 reviews)
    - Something Mystic
Spent 2-3 hours Monuments & Statues
    Het Bloemenbeek Monument image
It is well done as the artist's intention is to appear mystical. Seven sandstone menhirs and five boulders in the shape of circles and some menhirs not far from them. Well, you will jump into a conclusion that it should be a place for doing a ritual. In fact it's an artwork. It's located on an open green field, exact at the opposite of the "Landhuishotel De Bloemenbeek " ( Beunigerstraat 6 ). See more..

  10. 3.5 Brandmonument 1862 (6 reviews)
    - Commemorating a devastating fire
    Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
    Brandmonument 1862 image
Fifty years after a fire devastated a large part of Enschede's city center, this monument was unveiled. The sculptured part of it I found pretty attractive, though I doubt if the depicted men who attempt to extinguish fire (in social realist style) actually were bare chested. The design of the monument as a whole is rather poor. See more..
  11. 3.5 Toneelspelers (2 reviews)
    - Frivolous figures
    Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
    Toneelspelers image
Figures of actors on top of the facade of a small shopping center in central Enschede. Some in acrobatic poses and all seem good humored, almost frivolous. A pleasant sight. See more..
  12. 3.0 Dr. Schaepman standbeeld (1 review)
    - Big man
    Monuments & Statues
An enormous statue of Herman Schaepman amidst tall old trees is located on entering Tubbergen from the west. Schaepman (born in Tubbergen) was a Roman Catholic priest who -in the 19th century- gave Catholics in the Netherlands a political face. As member of the Dutch parliament and Pope loyalist he ensured the Roman Catholic flock followed right wings policies. Thus very much appreciated by the ruling elite. The statue is in need of a clean-up. White excrements of birds now 'adorn' head and shoulders. See more..
  13. 3.0 Indië monument (1 review)
    - Rather one-sided
    Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
This small monument dedicated to 6 Dutch soldiers who died in the period 1946 - 1949 in the Dutch Indies / Indonesia is located west of a bridge crossing the Vecht river at the northside of Hardenberg. The text on the sculpture states "onze jongens" (our boys) fought for order and peace, liberating people (from Japanese camps). At the time, just after WOII there were also many of our boys who refused to fight. They were right as it is (now) generally accepted the war in Indonesia fought by the Dutch army to re-establish colonial power was an unjust.war. See more..
