    - A big smile for the Citizens' House and their fingerprints -

    Stadhuis van Deventer image
The cultural dimension of Deventer is illustrated by the new complex of the city hall ,in the old historic centre ...my first eye contact with the spectacular huge building was impressive .The new building breaks the historic surroundings ,it's like a modern contemporary window ,so close to the Grote Kerk ...old and new architecture are nicely combined ,the exterior facade looks like a piece of artwork ,depicting 2264 fingerprints of local citizens .The striking building is organized around two important squares.I entered inside just to take a nice photo, nobody asked me anything .The city hall has been awarded a special prize for its original architecture in 2017 ... 3. 4.0 Koornmarktpoort Kampen (26 reviews)
    - Oldest and once the most significant of Kampen's historic gates
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings
    Koornmarktpoort Kampen image
For ages -since the early 1300s- this gate was considered the most significant entrance to the city. The first bridge from 1448 to link Kampen with the mainland was located at this spot and prior to that the ferry used to dock here. Farmers would transport their goods (corn) to the market (koornmarkt) behind the gate. The two robust towers were added later, when Kampen reinforced its defense structure. The architecture of the gatebuilding is functional and less exuberant than that of the two other historic gates that were renovated during the early 1600s. The Koornmarktgate kept its austere looks and for a considerable time period served as a prison. Note the amazing masonry! See more..
  4. 4.0 Rijksmonument Broederpoort Kampen uit 1465 (26 reviews)
    - Celebratory Renaissance style gatebuilding
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
Rijksmonument Broederpoort Kampen uit 1465 image
Probably this one is the most prominent of the three historic gates left in Kampen. Just imagine there once were 20 gates. Anyway, the Broederpoort from 1465 dates from the same period as the Cellebroedersgate a bit further away. Like the Cgate renovated early 17th century to reappear suitable as a residence for wealthy city dignitaries. Apart from the festive towers the middle part looks really fine. As most Renaissance style buildings in the Netherlands it exhales celebration, rather than austerity. The gatebuilding now serves as an exposition room and -appropiately- a wedding location. 5. 3.5 Botermarkt Deventer (12 reviews)
    - From the 1880s: using cast iron to make a place look good
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites
    Botermarkt Deventer image
Compare this butter market hall from 1889 to what they make nowadays. Craftmanship at the turn of the 19th century was still valued in its own right. In this case wrought iron was used to make the place attractive (no blatant commercial advertising to buy this or that). Home made butter was sold here (no cheap industrial Unilever margarine). And look what have they done with this historic gem: they turned it into a place to park bicycles! See more..
  6. 4.0 molen van Frans (11 reviews)
    - Great Mill

    molen van Frans image
After the disappointing visit to ‘Molen van Bels’ we walked to the ‘Molen van Frans’, a nice 10 min walk. This mill is operational and it is very interesting to have a look inside the mill. They grind corn, show how to make paper and there is lots to read about the history of this mill. Great place and really worth a visit See more..

See more..

The watermill is located in a protected village area with beautiful nature. It's a national monument. At this moment it has limited opening, even you need to make an appointment due to the pandemic. 13. 4.0 Brigittakerk of Ned.Herv.Kerk te Ommen (5 reviews)
    - Charming, rather complex church building
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Churches & Cathedrals
Brigittakerk of Ned.Herv.Kerk te Ommen image
This late Gothic style church lies a bit higher than the rest of the city, as it is located on an old river dune. Parts of the ancient structure from before a destructive fire in 1624 are still visible in the foundation and lower parts of the main building. Instead of a tower the rebuilt 17th century church got a remarkable square clockhouse in front. Inside two clocks date from 1517. The present-day tower was added in 1857. The church was dedicated to Brigida, the Irish patron-saint of cattle, but the Dutch Reformed who took charge after 1587 do not encourage the worship of saints. Most people refer to the church as "de Hervormde Kerk". Overall a rather complex structure, but really charming. See more..

There is an exposition 'Kunst onder de Wieken 2019' ( art under the windmill sail) at this moment. It is open on saturday & sunday 02.00pm-05.00pm in June, July and August 2019. See more..

    Kleinste Huisje Kampen image
Most probably it was a small warehouse, but later started to be used as a dwelling. Hard to imagine that once five people lived in there. After restoration in 1992 a 'museum' with trinkets and knick knacks. Nice to peep into. See more..
  17. 4.0 Stadhuis en Stadsarchief Enschede (4 reviews)
    - Scandinavian style city hall
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Civic Centres
    Stadhuis en Stadsarchief Enschede image
Originally the design brought together a square and a rectangle with a 50m high tower at their meeting point. The architect G. Friedhoff clearly was inspired by Scandinavian architecture and even now after extensions and other changes the structure still very much looks like the Stockholm city hall. Completed in 1933 the assigment was considered very successful as the client (the municipal authorities) did not want city hall to look opulent. See more..
  18. 4.5 De Nieuwe Toren (3 reviews)
    - 17th century Carillon Tower
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    De Nieuwe Toren image
Over three hundred years old and still called 'Nieuwe Toren' (new tower) because in 1663 it replaced an old chapel. At the time it must have been quite an achievement for a middle-sized city of traders to commit resources to building such a (non-religious) Carillon tower. Perhaps it served to underscore the significance of Kampen in competition with cities like Amsterdam. A competition Kampen eventually lost due to the silting up of its principal waterways. Anyhow, Kampens heydays left us this beautiful tower with music to increase happiness. See more..

  22. 3.5 Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk Of Buitenkerk (2 reviews)
    - Reerected by Catholics in 1809
Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Churches & Cathedrals
Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk Of Buitenkerk image
Outside (buiten) the city walls a Christian church dedicated to Mary was built over a period of time starting in 1369. Eventually this church got into decay. It was reduced to a pile of stones (een hoop stenen) according to a Catholic priest in 1809. In this year Louis Napoleon (French ruler of Holland) granted the minority Catholics in Kampen persmission to rebuild a church at the site. They built the present day church in neogothic style. Not as big as the Protestant Bovenkerk, but large enough to show they could come close to parity. Unlike the Bovenkerk, this church is still a place of worship and a center of the Catholic community in Kampen. See more..

  26. 4.0 Proveniershuizen Hasselt (16e Eeuw) (1 review)
    - Mooie provenierswoninkjes
    Historic Sites
    Proveniershuizen Hasselt (16e Eeuw) image
