    - Sublimely breathtaking volcanic landscape

Parque Natural de Cumbre Vieja image
This is an amazing place that left me in awe. The scenery is indescribably beautiful and human beings are few and far between. The trails teeter on the edge of precipices with stunning views that make you appreciate why people started visiting 'sublime ' landscapes in the first place. A word of warning, however - you need to be fairly fit and well shod, as the paths can be treacherous at times due to masses of stones and dust that move under your feet when you least expect it - and I was wearing good hiking boots! Unless you're an expert mountain walker, add at least 30% to the estimated walking times provided in the otherwise excellent info provided at the visitors' centre. Take plenty of water and remember - the sublime cannot be tamed... See more..

  6. 5.0 Pico de la Nieve (20 reviews)
    - Amazing scenery, great walks, a must see area in La Palma...

If I got my geography right then this was the endpoint of our Caldera rim trail walk starting out at the highest point near the astronomical observatories. The whole trail along the rim follows one of the GR trails then heading down through the beautiful pine forests it's another minor trail. All are clearly signposted at fairly frequent intervals and have way-markers along the route too. The highpoint is rocky and barren as is the Caldera rim trail and then a complete contrast is the beautiful pine forests as you descend to the road and parking area. I'm sure we missed loads on just our single visit to the rim trail but were lucky with only some clouds coming and going as we walked. Trails are varied, plenty of up's and down's but not so steep as other bits we walked on the island. These areas are definitely a must see if you're in La Palma. See more..

It was our first mirador visited at el Hierro and it was simply breathtaking. The weather was perfect and we could see the entire la Frontera region and the mountain chain. We also took an hour stroll along the ridge just to enjoy this beauty. Good to know that from this mirador starts the hiking treck with the same name, which used to serve the only connection between parts of island before roads were built. See more..

Absolutely stunning scenery, clear blue water and calm conditions for swimming and affordable sun loungers (€13.50/two loungers and an umbrella). This was an idyllic beachside experience. There are beach bars, water sport rentals and an area for naturalists. Don’t miss it! See more..
  10. 4.5 Centro de Interpretacion del Parque Cultural de El Julan (82 reviews)
    - A walk down in history
Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Speciality Museums
Centro de Interpretacion del Parque Cultural de El Julan image
Starting in the beautiful morning light in the pine forrest the guide took us downhill in a landscape where we here and there came up to signs of the Bimbaches' life. Caves that gave them shelter, places where they gathered, lots of shells from the seafood they ate and fragments of pots for the water they drank and the rock carvings. Those started our imagination. Right here, someone sat and carved these pictures and signs. What was occuping that persons mind? Was he or she thinking how long will the carvings last? Who will look at them and what will they think ...? Later, after the return to the El Julan center by the 4x4, we had a tase of local wine, cheese and cake on the terrace. Delicious! And in the center we could also watch a short movie and an interesting exhibition about the Bimbaches and their world. I can strongly recommend a visit to El Julan for the Center, for the Tour and for the Landscape. Book in advance to be sure there is a guided tour! See more..

    Pozo de las Calcosas image
It was a last minute decision to come here and it was the right one. Being there off season and strolling though empty tiny streets was charming and creepy at the same time. The village was completely abandoned as everyone just left yesterday. Having entire village at our disposition, We spent a good couple of hours swimming in the pool, enjoying views of the raging Atlantic, and discoveing architectural miracles of the fisherman village. The final reward of the day was a stunning sunset upon our return to the parking lot. See more..
