Orangutan Applause - Day Tours image
Thank you for the great organised tour! If was truly a pleasure even with some rain in the rainforest the boat was nice and comfortable - especially the toilet / shower was bigger than expected and even hot shower available! Wow also the team on board and the food was very delicious and great :) also very happy and satisfied with our great guide Alan / soo interested himself in the animals and nature which made it fun to look for not only the organgutans.. Also the night walk was great and we were lucky :) even the smooth easy 3h hike was good - just take lots and the right brand of insect repellent in rainy season.. Would definitely recommend them, good luck for the future and maybe also nice to see more sustainable ideas and maybe some add ons to book like a culture or Dayak experience or so to learn a bit more about the area around the national park and kalimatan :) See more..

Last week me and my brother left Maratua Guesthouse after three nights ... and now I am back in Germany and it seems like a dream....
    - on this wonderful island, with this very nice hosts, very good food (!!!) and a wonderful underwater world - never before I visited such a place - colorful, swimming with turtles, jellyfish, sensing the ocean and for a moment, just thinking: there are places on earth where time stops, everything seems to be in peace, you can feel the warmth on your skin, see the sparkles of plankton around you when Jun turns the light of at night ....

here it is cold at the moment and life is very busy again ....

but in my dreams i can remember -

Hope to come back some day!

The best mosque I ever seen in Indonesia until now. Very artistic, very quiet, good for relax and if you need some time alone to reflect things. As long as you respect this worship place like wash your feet before you enter, not use your slippers or shoes inside and don't be noisy. I had a great experience here. See more..

Our guide, Mukani (081351194444 and email: [email protected]), was really awesome and I highly recommend him. He was really nice, informative and reasonably priced. We went out early in the morning, ate some good food, and got to see something that is unfortunately all too rare, community. Later that afternoon we met back up for the canal tour which I'll leave for you to experience yourself. Both were a lot of fun, and it was exciting to see some of the local culture! See more..

We came to Kemala beach on weekdays. Not many people there. So we can enjoy the beach freely. This beach was located right in the middle of Balikpapan centre. It was a clean enough beach. With very cheap entrance fee. We came in with a car, 2 adults & 3 kids, and we only paid IDR6000. Too bad, the washing facilities was awfull. Dirty and dont have many rooms provided. We sat on benches under the palm trees and were (forced) given a food menu from a restaurant. To make everyone happy we decided to order some coconuts. And it costs IDR23500 for each coconut. What!! Islands
    Maratua Island image
Last July-August 2015, we spent 20 days on that wonderful island with our 2 kids (9 + 11 year-old). Coming from Switzerland the journey was long but rewarding: the island is still wild and avoids mass tourism. We stayed at MARATUA GUESTHOUSE run by friendly Jun, Ana and their lovely son. We liked the relax and family atmosphere. The food was excellent in their restaurant by the seashore. The snorkeling from the resort was amazing (so many turtles! squids, lion fishes, barracudas, sea snakes, etc.). We did also really nice scuba dives with Nabucco's Extra Divers, jumped in a natural pool in the jungle, swam with stingless jellyfishes on Kakaban island and saw Manta rays on Sangalaki. Jun was really helpful in organizing the excursions and boat transfers. We dream to go back there! See more..
  27. 3.5 Siring Watch Towers Martapura River (86 reviews)
    - What a lone watch tower.
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Observation Decks & Towers
Siring Watch Towers Martapura River image
I visited this watch tower on Sunday morning at about 10 am. This watch tower is really quite a good building although not so high, but it unfortunately seems like lonely. It seems that the visitors are only young couples that spend their times there. From the 4th floor, we can see beautiful view of Martapura River below. I heard that earlier in the morning there are some women on boats on the river selling vegetables, fruits etc that also known as "floating market" like in Lok Baintan, the one I made review before. I think the local government should make some promotions, so this place can be more famous and gets a lot of visitors. See more..

    - Spotting the monkey
Sunday: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Nature & Wildlife Tours
Mangrove & Proboscis Conservation Area image
Tarakan is a typical untidy and chaotic Indonesian city. It is thus a big surprise to discover this oasis in the midst of the city. It is a mangrove swamp which is walled in. There are boardwalks running through the trees. The forest is home to Proboscis monkeys. They are big and if they jump up in front of you are quite intimidating. But I don't think they eat people. Definitely a good attraction to visit in Tarakan. There isn't much else. (sorry Tarakan residents!) See more..

We saw many animals like rabbits, deers, little bear, hedgehog, owl and uwa-uwa. Uwa-uwa is like a monkey with the bigger body than usually, and sometimes scream like “waakk waakk”. After that, we went to the top of Meratus Mountain and get through a pool and the way is so high steep and narrow (enough for two cars only). At the top we saw the amazing view. See more..

    - Pantai Banua Patra a nice place to visit
    Beaches
    Benua Patra Beach image
The beach is situated across the popular Lapangan Merdeka (Merdeka Field). There is a huge Sport Center, and just behind the building you can find the Chopper field, and the beach. The first time, I came to this place it was in the late afternoon and spent most of my time at the Chopper field on the left side of the beach. I took some pictures of the city scrapers and the couples and some group of people just hanging around waiting for the sunset. My last visit, two weeks ago, I explored the rugged beach (the right side of the beach to the direction of Melawai Beach). There is a little rugged rock where people like take pre-wedding picture. When you climb up the rock and you can find another secluded little beach. If you walk further, you can take picture of the hill scattered by houses. This used-to-be ford location, is a good place to take picture of the sunset. Over weekend you will find many photographers here. See more..

  47. 4.0 Kutai National Parrk (43 reviews)
    - Perhaps the best place on Earth to see wild Orangutans
Spent More than 3 hours National Parks
    Kutai National Parrk image
I booked a tour to see Kutai National Park for two days to see the Orangutan and was NOT disappointed! After taking a 30 minute boat ride up the river to the Prevab ranger station we ate lunch and rested briefly before going out on our first trek. Not all but a large amount of the forest is secondary subsequently due to the great Borneo forest fires years ago, but ironically it has actually greatly increased one's chances of seeing Orangutan there due to the parks reduction. Within 30 minutes the ranger round several orangutans directly above us and while they rarely come to the ground, they came within a few meters of us. We also saw a black and white snake, beautiful mushrooms, monitors, and macaques and during the night safari we saw a beautifully coloured kingfisher, as well several large spiders and a tarantula. Walking through the jungle to the sounds of the forest and in the midst of the moonlight is definitely something I would recommend to the adventure traveler! See more..
