Safe and wonderful canopy tour with an English speaking guide, allowing you to have a fantastic overview on the forest and also excellent for birds and monkeys observation. Interestingly, at that place, I also made a 2 hour trek during the night with a ranger and we saw different mammals (civets,...), owls and tarentule. Highly recommended Also, close to that place, make a boat trip with a local fisherman on the black river, where you’ll see probiotic monkeys with their huge nose +++

A long way to go... for a little bridge
The Bangkirai Rainforest Canopy Bridge is just like it sounds. It's just over 1 1/2 hours drive from Balikpapan - across some really rough roads that have been badly damaged by all the heavy lorries carrying coal from the open cast mines in this part of Borneo. The bridge is 30m up and is suspended between 4 trees. From the top, there is a view of some primary rainforest, but it is pretty unremarkable as the scenery in this part of Borneo is fairly flat. We arrived mid afternoon and there was no animal or bird life to see - even though there is apparently some. There are also some forest trails that you can trek along. As in much of Indonesia, there is a special entrance price for foreigners (Rp 75.000) which is more than double the cost for locals. Overall, it's OK (if you don't mind the long and bumpy drive) - but there are far better ways to see the rainforest in all it's glory.
