   We went in beginning of July and stayed overnight with Kazakh Nomads in their authentic yurt after negotiating a price of 120rmb including a horse ride. The lake and grassland was beautiful but too bad it is next to the highway. (But this made it accessible to us). At night they ask if we would join for dinner with the family and we had a delicious meal of mutton and rice and lots and lots of yak tea. We were asked to pay what we feel like to the mother. We had good conversations about their life and they were very open. (They speak Chinese and Kazakh, no English) At night it was very cold and our private yurt was heated by sheep poop (which didn't smell bad). There is no facilities or showers or toilets. Everything is done behind some trees far off in the distance or the open grassland. It was the most memorable day in my travels throughout China, I highly recommend staying the night. See more..

   We hired Ablajan as our driver and guide for our 10 day road trip touring north and northwest xinjiang. But due to covid, we had to skip the northwest and do more day trips out of Urumqi and we went to Turpan. Having Ablajan allows us to be very flexible with our itinerary and he was experienced and knowledgeable enough to make the changes seamless and painless. We actually ended up experiencing a wide spectrum of landscapes which was amazing and exciting. Ablajan is effectively fluent in a few languages, professional, punctual and willing to go that extra mile. His car is always clean and spotless when he arrives in the morning to take us out. And with my diet restrictions, he will always bring me something yummy to eat for lunch at scenic spots where there are not much food options.     While there are stands of Euphrates Poplars you can go to on this highway just north of here, this ticketed attraction is excellent. There is a lot to see and to photograph, with boardwalks (some still under construction) and many trees and logged trunks to marvel at. You can drive in or be driven around in the park vehicles - you pay the same either way - and stop at the marked attractions and walk a little in among the trees. Watch for rabbits bolting out from resting under the board walks! And ants on the trunks. We didn't ride the scenic train or climb the lookout tower, as we spent all our time in among the trees, logs and stumps. It took almost 3 hours from Korla and we stopped from nang bread from a roadside baker and drove down to the Tarim River after and ate and drank cold beer at a famous noodle shop - posting a photo here.     Our guide and driver was Adiljan. We took our 3 years old child and didn't regret about it. The car was air-conditioned and comfortable. During the trip Adiljan made several stops at our request. We visited Yanhu Salt Lake, Museum of Turpan, Old Karez, 1000 Buddha Caves, Jiaohe ruins, and stopped near Flame Mountain. All these places were very interesting and worth visiting. Adiljan was well-informed guide and experienced driver. Besides he speaks English, Chinese and Uigur languages, so tourists can be both from China and from other countries. We really enjoyed the trip and recommend Adiljan to everyone who would like to know the history of this area. See more..

    Hotan is a small city in the west of Xinjiang, things are quite different here from Urumqi or the rest of China! Two most do there are 1. try the roasted chicken and lamb near the big mosque. 2. And do a desert trip, we found our guide recommended on line and lucky us he was free that day. Kurban is a great tour guide he speaks really good English and knows the area very well. We started at 5pm from Hotan (Hetian) and around 6 arrive to the camel station. We rode camels for about two hours until we found the perfect spot to camp! All equipment and dinner was provided for us by Kurban.     My review is actually on Bayanbulak Grassland. We had travelled from Turpan by bus as the train schedule was all in the afternoon which is not convenient. Took about 4 1/2 hours to reached Korla (Kuerle). Upon reaching Korla train station in the late afternoon, we found there was no direct bus to Bayanbulak. It was off season. However there was a bus to Hejing leaving immediately which we took. Spent the night at Hejing and next morning took the first bus to Bayanbulak 4 1/2 hrs trip passing thru beautiful mountainous scenery with snowcapped mountain and beautiful grasslands. The entrance to Bayanbulak Grassland is about one km from village. No buses going there and so we walk there. There is now an entrance fee which will include the bus ride to four scenic spots. The first attraction is the infamous Swan Lake. Not much swans around as it was autumn. Actually the best time to visit Swan Lake is between May to August. During this time, the lake will be full with migratory swans. We hop on the bus to the next attraction which is a walk around the grassland and horse ride. We didn't stop by. Hop on the bus again to the next attraction which is a Tibetan temple. There are a few lamas there and appear to be a practicing temple. The last attraction is the meandering river. To reach the top of the hill for a good view, you can opt for a buggy ride for a fee or a 20mins walk. Along the way, the view is spectacular with the snowcapped Tianshan mountain at the back and views of the beautiful grassland and meandering river thru the grassland. You can see a few horses, yaks and sheep. A few Mongolian yuk probably used by the herdsmen. Overall this is a memorial visit. See more..

    The Desert Botanical Garden south of Turpan is mainly a research facility but we were able to get a quick tour through a friend of a friend who is part of the BCGI. Being avid gardeners we were keen to see the work they do here and even though our visit was brief it was informative and they do some great work with other worldwide gardens. It definitely is not your traditional Botanic Garden with long paths, benches and signs everywhere it is mainly there for seed testing and a range of other research. See more..
