A wedge-shaped plateau between two rivers is the site of this old Silk Road city destroyed by Genghis Khan in the 13th century. Maybe because we were told this site was much less impressive than the Jiaohe ruins, we had low expectations but were all very impressed by its grandeur. In my group, we all found it more spectacular than Jiaohe as we felt we could imagine life in the past when the city must have been a thriving place on the Silk Road. We opted to not take the rather expensive bus and walk the 6 km from the entrance to the ruins and around and back again with a nine-year-old child. If you have any mobility issues, of course take the bus, but if the weather is not too hot and you feel like stretching your legs, I recommend walking the full distance as you can stop and start wherever and whenever you want. Only 3 tombs open, one contains 2 mummies and the other 2 paintings. Good to see them insitu but more to see in the Urumqi museum. Interesting but not worth going out of your way for. I must add though the new toilets here are the best in the whole of Xinjiang! See more..

I learned the history of the temple site as a "women kingdom", but there is no local guide at the site. So we just walked around the area, with only minimal explanation, so we didn't enjoy much. I am sure it will be very interesting if someone can explain what are the buildings. There is a little museum next to the site, but it has only pictures, almost no value to go in. See more..

The mausoleum, museum and palace are on the same road Huancheng Road. They are close to the Uygrus ares with some good restaurants and ice cream shops. There are two areas where locals Ugyurs have shops/restaurants. The one on the riad of tge mausoleum seems quite modern. The mausoleum was open in August 2022 and is worth visit. See more..

This is a great place to visit. Turpan's Jiaohe and Gaochang ruins are certainly bigger and better, but if you are in Urumqi you can't do better than coming here for a morning or afternoon adventure. Apparently, it dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). What you see is probably much later, sometime in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). (From Urumqi take the BRT 3, then the 528a bus, then the 312 bus. After this, you can either walk for about about 45 minutes or get a ride by a local person. They might charge you 10 rmb. Hey, walking is fun and good for you. The locals are friendly. It's an adventure. You wouldn't come here if you weren't an adventurer, would you?.) See more..

If you are on the way to Tianshan Gorge, you may glimpse this in the trees on the east side of the road. It takes a little finding, and it helps to know the Chinese characters, so I have put that in the photo.
