   Flaming Mountain is famous because of a well-known Chinese story book. It is worth seeing as it is quite unusual. All barren and brownish red. One has to go on a sunny day to see the glory of the all-red mountain. Slanting sunlight late in the day is better but it is hard to catch on a group tour. I took a walk from the entrance area all the way to the foot of the mountain; it takes about 20-25 minutes. It was quite hot on the day but tolerable.    If you cannot see Danxia, you can visit the amazing & mystery 五彩湾 in Xinjiang. We hired a driver to drive 300km off Urumqi city and we were awed by the colourful and stone-aged 五彩湾. There is no entrance fee needed. Strong wind hence, do bring a jacket along. There is no toilet facilities or purchase of water. So do clear your bladder and stock up your drinks. See more..

   Not our visiting site on our journey, when we passed by it, I asked my tour guide why the rocks on the hills are so strange, and he replied that is mysterious rock valley. Quite interesting. The scenery here is beautiful with wild flowers, strange rock formation, and some villagers are living here. See more..

   If you drive this one yourself, be prepared for a very scary stretch of road from Urumqi. It becomes narrow, winding, rutted and ... infested by huge trucks. Top speed is 20km's an hour for the last 30 km's. The glacier is off the main road about 4 km's by the access road. We didn't figure out who you pay to drive on this, and lots of people were hiking across the marshy meadow so we followed them and it was about 2 kms. By the time we got to the glacier edge it was getting dark, so we didn't explore much. Next time ... To avoid returning on the scary road, we decided to head south and then back north on a road that looked good on Google Maps. Big mistake. Just as scary to the south and the loop back road was closed. Became a 600 km detour. That explained the huge trucks on the tiny, winding rutted road. See more..

   Photos do not do justice to this amazing place! You have to see it for yourselves! We booked a day trip with China Silk Road Tours. It was a 2-hour drive from Kashgar and another 2 hours hiking up and down. The hike up was not too bad - terrain was mostly rock, with some stairs and snow/ice (in winter). I would recommend bringing snacks and water as there were no shops around. Because it was winter, my husband and I had the whole place to ourselves. It was just magical! See more..
