It is a huge National Park, Entrance tickets incl. Transfer bus to Flower outlook, Eagle Outlook, the Grand Canyon. Also there is a cable car across the gorge and boat trip returning to the main dam. It took us a full day from 10am to 7pm visiting all the above attractions. There is along walk from bus stop to each location, I guess at least 2KM walk each and we walk for 10Km during that day. JuHuaTai used to be a fantastically unspoilt walk up through a pine forest to reach a spot where the panorama in front of you was pretty much unequalled in South Mountain. Now unfortunately the brand new road which has replaced a wooded track beside the river has made the day trip about as ordinary as it could be and given the area access to boy-racers of all ages in their four-wheel drives out to impress the girlfriend for the day. Go in winter when at least the new road will be obliterated by snow and the boy racers are less likely to want to risk frostbite. See more..

If you drive this one yourself, be prepared for a very scary stretch of road from Urumqi. It becomes narrow, winding, rutted and ... infested by huge trucks. Top speed is 20km's an hour for the last 30 km's. The glacier is off the main road about 4 km's by the access road. We didn't figure out who you pay to drive on this, and lots of people were hiking across the marshy meadow so we followed them and it was about 2 kms. By the time we got to the glacier edge it was getting dark, so we didn't explore much. Next time ... To avoid returning on the scary road, we decided to head south and then back north on a road that looked good on Google Maps. Big mistake. Just as scary to the south and the loop back road was closed. Became a 600 km detour. That explained the huge trucks on the tiny, winding rutted road. See more..

The Desert Botanical Garden south of Turpan is mainly a research facility but we were able to get a quick tour through a friend of a friend who is part of the BCGI. Being avid gardeners we were keen to see the work they do here and even though our visit was brief it was informative and they do some great work with other worldwide gardens. It definitely is not your traditional Botanic Garden with long paths, benches and signs everywhere it is mainly there for seed testing and a range of other research. See more..
