The drive up to the checkpoint is beautiful and interesting. Unfortunately the checkpoint has been pushed further down the mountain on the Chinese side. The reason our Uighur tour guide gave was that because of US drone bombings on the Pakistan side the level of security has had to increase and the Chinese can no longer allow casual visitors access to the actual border.See more..
4.5Amannishahan Memorial Mausoleum(2 reviews) - Music for the Ages Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites • Monuments & Statues
Amannishahan was the Concubine of a Yarkand Khan and is buried in the general "Tombs of the Yarkand Khans" complex. She is memorable for having pulled together in one place some 340 Uigher folk songs, dances, and other music in a written format before it was lost to the ages. See more..
4.0Altyn Mosque(1 review) - One of the sights no to miss on the square Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites • Monuments & Statues
The Altyn Mosque ( 阿爾丁清真寺;) is a mosque in Yarkand. The mosque is located (N 38.415600 E 77.257900) on the square – the Al Tun Historical and Cultural plaza - where you also find the Mausoleum of Amannisa Khan and the photogenic City palace of Yarkand. The mosque is located on the east side of the A Le Tun road, about 200 meters north of the crossing of Lao Cheng road. Beyond the mosque is a cemetery housing the tombs of the Khans of Yarkand. Because we visited Yarkand late in the afternoon, the mosque was closed and we only have seen the exterior. The painted ceilings, we unfortunately couldn’t see. A visit to the mosque is a must see because it is one of the nice buildings around the square; the mosque and those other buildings form to my opinion the highlight of Yarkand.See more..
