3 Star Places To Visit in Xinjiang Uygur, China (50)
3.5Flaming Mountains (Huoyan Shan)(190 reviews) - A must-see in Turpan Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM Mountains • Geologic Formations
Flaming Mountain is famous because of a well-known Chinese story book. It is worth seeing as it is quite unusual. All barren and brownish red. One has to go on a sunny day to see the glory of the all-red mountain. Slanting sunlight late in the day is better but it is hard to catch on a group tour. I took a walk from the entrance area all the way to the foot of the mountain; it takes about 20-25 minutes. It was quite hot on the day but tolerable. Fortunately there was a waiting donkey-cart to take me back to the entrance, at RMB50.See more..
3.5Grand Bazzar(189 reviews) - Bazaar with a Middle-Eastern Flavor Points of Interest & Landmarks
Just as the name suggests, The Grand Bazaar or its official name,Urumqi International Bazaar is a shoppers' paradise. This place looks more like Middle-east or Central Asia than China. Most of the shops here are run by the Uyghurs and the goods sold here have a distinct Islamic flavor. If you are in Urumqi for a short visit, then this is the place for you to soak in the some local atmosphere, taste some Uyghur food and get some souvenirs. Items sold here are mostly cheap clothings, scarves, local handicrafts, musical instruments, hats, carpets, nuts and fruits. It is a very colorful place with much to see and buy (if you love shopping). Like most public places in this region, visitors will have to go through stringent security check before entering the bazaar complex.See more..
3.5Id Kah Mosque(174 reviews) - Must See Landmark in Kashgar Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Religious Sites
The Id Kah Mosque is a famous landmark in Kashgar. It is located next one of the main entrances to the "Old Town/Ancient City" area. In front the Mosque is a very large public square area where people leisurely walk through and enjoy the surroundings. The Mosque is nicely maintained and is clean. Upon entering the Mosque (fee required on entrance for tourists), the grounds area is lovely - many tall trees providing nice shade from the sun. Inside the Mosque structure, the design is quite simple and the area is clean. While this Mosque is not as elaborate so others around the world, it is still a nice place to visit. This Mosque is still actively being used for services in the evening hours and weekends. Nice place to visit and enjoy the scenery.See more..
3.5Karez System(146 reviews) - Another china engineering marvel Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Bodies of Water • Points of Interest & Landmarks
rated the 3rd marvel after Great Wall n Grand Canal, this describe how a desert region can survive for the past 3000 years. Water from the snow capped mountains were directed through thousand miles of man made underground tunnels. Wells n tunnels were dug all the way from melting mountains to irrigate the crops at the desert lowlands. Really interesting n yet not well published like the Great Wall. This place is exceptionally hot in summer and you could see beds on rooftops. Cooler to sleep on rooftops. See more..
3.5Emin Minaret (Su Gong Ta)(116 reviews) - Lovely Minaret and Mosque Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Religious Sites
While we were touring the sites in Turpan, one nice site to visit is the Emin Minaret. According to Wikipedia, this Minaret is 44 meters (144 ft.) in height and it the tallest Minaret in China. Adjacent to the Minaret, is a Uyghur (Muslim) Mosque structure. The mosque interior is nothing fancy - just plain and simple. The two structures - Minaret and Mosque - are nice looking structures together and is an interesting place to visit. The surrounding area and the structures themselves are well maintained and clean.See more..
Great visit to the beautiful, well-maintained vineyards. Our group enjoyed the educational tour. The area is very scenic. Likely, best to come in September, while there are still lots of grapes.See more..
3.0Astana-Karakhoja Tombs(47 reviews) - Urumqi Museum better to view the mummies Ancient Ruins • Cemeteries
Only 3 tombs open, one contains 2 mummies and the other 2 paintings. Good to see them insitu but more to see in the Urumqi museum. Interesting but not worth going out of your way for. I must add though the new toilets here are the best in the whole of Xinjiang!See more..
3.5Tashkurgan Fort(28 reviews) - If you are looking for Silk road historyhere it is Historic Sites
The main reason for our visit to Tashkurgan was "Stone Fort" which is reputed to be around 2000 years old. Its location affords it a significant level f control over the surrounding area with high mountains surrounding on a couple of sides and a flat semi fertile plain on the other. The views are spectacular ans one could well imagine the King who reigned here having tight control of the silk road caravans. The Fort is easy to locate and whilst there is not much more than the outer walls there has been some esthetic management of the renovations. They could really do with some level of museum or area showing the strategic nature of the site.See more..
3.5Urumqi Botanical Garden(14 reviews) - Good for old folks Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Amusement & Theme Parks • Parks
The Urumqi Botanical Garden is a small garden which is nicely laid out with lots of beautiful plants and benches for the old people to sit on. Not a great botanic garden overall but inexpensive and lovely anyway.See more..
3.5Kezi'er Ga Ha Beacon(12 reviews) - Just a visiting site on the way to the next destination Historic Sites • Military Bases & Facilities
Only one beacon tower, you can see the a small scale yadan landform. But what impressed is the sound of the wind, quite scary, the wind pass through the gap and holes of the small hill, feel like ghost crying. Not worth to drive a long way just to visit here, but if you are on the way and make a stop here is not a bad choice.See more..
Maybe you can judge people by how they keep animals. The Urumqi Zoo is one of the least visually stimulating zoos I have been in and believe me we have been to a lot around the world. The cages are large and the animals that are there seem happy enough and cared for but there are empty cages, places that look like nothing has ever been there, it is dusty with little landscaping and if you spend an hour there you have seen it all. I hate to give bad ratings to zoos because people should support zoos and wildlife conservation but I can only go as high as 3 star for this one.See more..
The mausoleum, museum and palace are on the same road Huancheng Road. They are close to the Uygrus ares with some good restaurants and ice cream shops. There are two areas where locals Ugyurs have shops/restaurants. The one on the riad of tge mausoleum seems quite modern. The mausoleum was open in August 2022 and is worth visit. See more..
3.5Jiadengyu Forest Park(11 reviews) - Lovely scenery in early spring Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Parks • Forests
I went there in early spring (month of May). The snow was melting at the mountain tops whilst the pastures started to turn green; the scenery was lovely. I also took photos of sunrise and of some animals. Stayed at the Birch Forest Hotel which was adjacent to a large pasture where one could watch sunrise. The horses and sheep were not there, apparently they were being moved to higher grounds for feeding.See more..

3.0Upal Village(10 reviews) - Great food, lovely village Points of Interest & Landmarks
This is a great place to stop for lunch on the way to/from Tashkurgan to Kashgar. Traditional Uighur and Tajik fare like rice pilaf with carrot and pumpkin and lamb, kebabs, breads and loads of fruit. Try the local tea which is made from black te, goji berry, saffron and cardamom. Lovely!See more..

3.5Tu Lu Fan Qing Nian Lu Bu Xing Jie(7 reviews) - Great Vine Tunnels Wednesday: 7:00 AM - 10:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Scenic Walking Areas
The Qingnian Pedestrian Street runs in a north and south direction between Wenhua Middle Road and Laocheng Middle Road. It is actually a tiled walkway which is covered by grave vines, and a great area to take a break from the heat of Turpan. There are two sculptures at the entrance on Laocheng Middle Road, on either side of a wide Uighur styled entrance gate. A short walk north on the street, and a left turn will lead to the Tourism Cultural Square. We thought that this area was very well done and beautifully maintained. There are not many green public areas in Turpan, so this is a must see. Other nearby attractions include the Turpan Museum and Shenhong Square.See more..
3.5Turpan Bazaar(7 reviews) - Local Bazaar Flea & Street Markets
Small Bazaar centrally located in Turpan. This is very much a working market for the local Uyghur population, large entrance but soon becomes a maze of alleys packed full of locals buying clothes, household goods, carpets, food, toys and everything else under the sun. The meat section is worth seeing, but not for the squeamish !!! In front of the main entrance is a colourful "jumble" of fresh fruit vendors, we picked up some cheap fruit. Associated with / next to the bazaar is a partially covered street with tables and chairs and lined with small and cheap stalls selling cooked foods, great smells and sights indeed. Well worth a 30min look around if only to get a taste of how the locals live, A great place to watch the locals.See more..
3.0Hantengeli Temple(7 reviews) - Beautiful building Wednesday: 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM Religious Sites

3.5Baiyu River(6 reviews) - BAIYU RIVER, HOTAN (HETIAN), XIJIANG Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 11:00 PM Bodies of Water
BAIYU RIVER, HOTAN (HETIAN), XIJIANG is considered as one of the main rivers in HOTAN, The water of the river likely comes from the KUNLUN MOUNTAIN, one of the main mountain range in XIJIANG. The river (YU LONG HO meaning Jade Dragon River in Chinese) also well known for the HOTAN Jade; and sadly to say it has been over excavated and one can see pot holes all over the place. Nothing much to see here and the place is barren and void of visitors.See more..
3.0Malana E'shiding Tomb(5 reviews) - It is not far from main square of kucha on south. Cemeteries

This is not our destination, but we pass by it on the way. Beautiful. There are small and big dragon ponds. 3.0Mailikeawati Ancient City(4 reviews) - Ancient City Ruins Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Ancient Ruins With the proper guide, much can be learned about the ancient city of Mailikeawat city that thrived here. Locals still look for , but rarely find, jade and other valuable traces of the once great community that existed between the rivers. If you are fortunate enough to be taken at sunset in a horse drawn wagon, you can capture a magnificent scene resplendant with colors and unmatched beauty.See more..
3.5Tajike Museum(4 reviews) - No one knows about it: Corner of Tawuguzi Lu and Renmin Dong Lu Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality Museums Since there actually few things to do in Kashgar, you might stroll over to see this small collection of Silk Road objects. Free entrance. Then continue on toward the Grand Bazaar and come back through the Old City toward the Mosque. It is on Tawuguzi Lu, just past the corner of Renmin Dong Lu. Get the English map at the airport, best local map I have had in China so far.See more..
3.5Dawakun Desert(3 reviews) - Sadly more a tourist trap than a real desert Deserts
达瓦昆沙漠旅游风景区, slightly more than 2.5 hours from Kashgar city, is really just the fringe of the great Taklamakan Desert. You get to see a bit of the desert, true, but it's just disappointing that it's obviously a tourist trap. A tell-tale sign is the man-made lake at the start of the "desert". Plus you have to pay 45 yuan entrance fee, 10 yuan for a scenic horse cart ride by an Uighur grandpa (the only highlight), and another 90 yuan to sit on a sand buggy or camel to bring you into the desert. We chose to walk instead, and we climbed sand dunes, took some pictures, and had a picnic. Basically tried to make the most of the trip. But the disappointment extended to lunch: somehow we let our driver persuade us to try the "best" roasted lamb at their restaurant. Although we ordered the smallest rack, they served us the medium one and charged us 150 yuan for it. The lamb was good, but the whole experience left a pretty bad aftertaste. Kashgar has great natural attractions, so I do not recommend spending time and money at this place.See more..
3.5Rawak Buddah Temple(3 reviews) - important site, left somewhat neglected Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Religious Sites
Surrounded by a wooden boardwalk, both this and the stupa is now half buried in sand. The visitor centre looks to have been abandoned.See more..
3.5Ai'ding Lake(3 reviews) - Absolutely peaceful Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Bodies of Water

Being a Xibo visiting the region ancestors lived for the past 250 years since the greatest migration in history from their home in the northeast over 5000km away in 1764, when 3000 of them took a year to walk via Mongolia the quickest route, I didn't know what to expect, but was glad of the visit. Although the ticket office by the gate gave discount for most from senior, junior, public sector staff and students, but they wont for Xibo people even traveled thousands of miles to come! Inside the courtyard buildings looked fairly new, with archery ground, different rooms with display of history of the minority which is small in population with big personality, specialize in archery, riding & fighting. Also recorded their first ever group of 11 junior school students including grandfather at the age of only 8 sent to Russia. Having been to Khorgas now next destination back to their origin Fuyu Jilin!See more..
See more..
3.5Beiting Old City(2 reviews) - BeiTing Ancient mud brick mounds Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites
Not a compact site like the Turpan city, but remnants over a big, flat, rough area. One part has pathways being built and is fenced off for the moment, but other parts nearby are accessible. Not worth a day trip, but interesting as a stop off. When the pathways are finished and signage put in, it will probably cost real money. It may be combined with the huge new museum designed for tour buses, which costs about 56 RMB to go in. Not knowing if there was any English, we opted for eating in Jimsar instead. A row of Uighur BBQ's on the main highway beckoned us.See more..
