Ir. D.F. Wouda Steam Pumping Station The D.F. Woudagemaal in the town of Lemmer is the world's largest steam pumping station still in working condition. The pumping station was opened in 1920 by Queen Wilhelmina for the purpose of pumping excess water from Friesland into the Zuyder Zee, the present-day IJsselmeer. The imposing brick building is austere and functional, in line with the architectural style of the Amsterdam School. In 1966, the electrically driven J.L. Hoogland pumping station in Stavoren took over the task of the steam pumping station in Lemmer. And yet, even today, the historic D.F. Woudagemaal plays a crucial role in extreme conditions. In cases of extremely high water, the old steam pumping station is deployed to drain excess water into the IJsselmeer as quickly as possible. The D.F. Visited Franeker as part of tour of my ancestral roots. The town was clean, easy to walk and interesting. The City Hall was an unexpected treat. It was open for tours with printed material explaining the building, its additions and the function of the inside rooms.There was a docent who was welcoming and helpful but with limited English. There was no charge to tour the building.See more..
The Leeuwarden Railway Station started being used in 1863, with the opening of the Leeuwarden to Harlingen line. Quite a pretty station actually, also from the inside.See more..

Popta Castle, the jewel among the Frisian manors. The history of the manor goes back to the 15th century, when it was founded by the Heringa family as a fortified manor house. In 1603 the van Eysinga family acquired the manor by inheritance, converted it and gave it the appearance it still has today. Following the death of the last member of that family living at Popta Castle, in 1687, her heirs sold the manor to the unmarried lawyer Dr. Henricus Popta. Up to his death in 1712, Dr. Popta used Heringastate, chiefly as a summer residence. Ever since then the house has never been lived in. Now as a museum Popta Castle welcomes visitors to look round the various rooms, which are still fully and delicately furnished in 17th and 18th century style. Also the ‘Almshouse’ founded by Dr. Poptain 1712 to offer widows in need and single elderly women a carefree old age is certainly worth visiting. Drenkelingenhuisje - shipwreck house (Drenkeling = drowning man) This typical construction can be found at the north-east coast of the Island of Terschelling. It is located near ‘paal 24’ marker 24, which is about 5.5 km East of Beach pavilion Heartbreak Hotel at the end of the ‘Badweg’ in Oosterend. In 1865 it was approved by the minister of interior affairs that a wooden construction would be erected as a shelter for survivors of shipwrecks. As it is a remote place and a tricky coast with many ships that sank, the shelter would give survivors the ability to spend the first hours there till dawn or till the storm was over. The current shelter is not the original, as it disappeared in a storm in 1962. The cabin you will find now dates from around 2000 and is a very complete replica. It’s a characteristic shelter for Terschelling and very photogenic especially when the clouds and sun cooperate well Getting there; 1. You can walk the 5 km from the dune-crossing (marker 18) at the end of the ‘Badweg’ of Oosterend. 2 By normal bike you can even get closer almost to marker 20 (saves you 2 km of walking) by following the bicycle path that starts near the plaque for ‘Sil de Strandjutter’ which is about 500 meters from the dune-crossing on the ‘Badweg’. You follow the path till the end and walk the last 3 km via the beach. You can actually cycle even further on an unpaved path, but likely the gadflies/horse-flies and mosquitos will drive you crazy. So walking along the beach likely is the better option. 3 you can also rent Beach-bikes (fat bikes) that are allowed to take with you on the beach and have these huge tires. The miller gave us a lot of information about how it works etc. As there's no wind at all, the mill didn't work at the moment we were here so we couldn't see the work of the saw. Sylhús is a lock keeper's house with bell tower in Hindeloopen and it's located just next to a "sluis" ( lock ). The wall is decorated with a coat of arms with year (1619). The "leugenbank" (seats) in the sylhuis was used to be a place for people of the village coming together. Martinikerk ( St. Martin's Church) is a Protestant church in Bolsward was open when we walked around on saturday. There was a book fair, you can buy a book for € 1,00. This church has beautiful wood carving baroque style pulpit from 1662 and Choir stalls from end of the 15th century, very detailed. The organ has beautiful decoration. The church is in active use, with a weekly Sunday service.See more..

Next to the entrance there is an information board of the Crash B-24 Liberator in 22nd December 1943. The Klokkenstoel ( Belfry in local traditional style) is located in the middle of a small cemetery. It's nice to see it. There is also a big stone next to the entrance as the mark of "Stone Route Gaasterland" trail. You can park your car outside the fence.See more..

When we drove to this place, we could park our car next to the chimney near the bridge. What a contrast, one canal two different sight. One side of the bridge there were many boat moored on the water and area of restaurants, cafes and very crowded while on the other side of the bridge is very green, no boat moored but people were having picnic between the bushy green area. We didn't walked so far to see all the green quay.See more..

Not just the church is beautiful, but also the setting on a grassy elevation (terp) in the center of Wolvega is appealing. Rebuilt in 1646 and again after a fire in 1894 the gothic style church bears the marks of history. The church is still in use by the Dutch reformed community in Wolvega. Op een verhoogd grasveld of grafhevel staat de unieke klokkenstoel, op zes vierkante houten poten. Het is een Rijksmonument. Rondom dit kleine kerkhof liggen nog een klein aantal oude graven van de dorpsbewoners uit Sonnega. De klokkenstoel van Sonnega is nog steeds in functie. Als er iemand uit het dorp overlijdt, of begraven wordt, kan op verzoek de klok worden geluid. De klok wordt ook geluid bij oud/nieuwjaar. In de vrijstaande houten stellage hangt een klok, deze werd gegoten door Klokkengieterij Petit & Fritsen in Aarle Rixtel. Bij de ingang van het kerkhofje staat een paneel met de geschiedenis, dat in de 15e eeuw hier een kerkje stond. Dit kerkhofje is nu gesloten, de nieuwe begraafplaats is verplaatst naar de aan de overkant van de weg. Als je in de buurt bent van Wolvega, kun je er best even hier langs rijden voor een bezoekje.See more..

Deze hervormde kerk wordt door de inwoners van Balk "It Breahus" genoemd. De kerk staat aan de Luts, een gekanaliseerd riviertje die kaarsrecht stroomt door het historisch centrum van Balk. Ga je het Breahus bekijken, vergeet dan niet aandacht te geven aan de vele herenhuizen, veelal uit de 18e eeuw, die langs de Luts staan. Misschien dat daarom, na al die mooie panden, het Breahus mij toch wel tegenviel. De kerk werd gebouwd in 1728 onder leiding van de meester-timmerman Roelof Saegman. Het is een eenbeukige zaalkerk met een 3-zijdig gesloten koor. Alleen de voorgevel is goed te zien, zijgevels en achterzijde (het koor) staan ingeklemd tussen belendende huizen. De voorgevel (westgevel) is een z.g. topgevel, met muurankers, hoofdingang en twee grote, hoog geplaatste rondboogvensters. De plaatsing van de vensters in de voorgevel doen sterk denken aan de voorgevels van de meeste "Vermaningen" (doopsgezinde kerken). Boven de hoofdingang een bijbelse spreuk uit het Boek Mattheüs. Op naar verhouding (te) kleine aanzetkrullen beiderzijds de geveltop staat "anno 1728". Op het dak, wat verscholen achter de top van de gevel, een met zink beklede kleine dakruiter met uurwerk, galmgaten en bekroond met een windwijzer. De plek van dakruiter direct achter de topgevel ziet er niet mooi uit (bij de gelijkende gevel en dakruiter van de kerk in Balkbrug heeft men dit beter opgelost, door de top van de gevel in te korten). Een gebrandschilderd raam in de kerk herinnert aan de bouw van de kerk en vermeldt o.a. de naam van de bouwmeester. De overige rondboogvensters, in voor- en zijgevel, zijn voorzien van zo te zien vroeg 20e eeuws glas-in-lood in een stijl die enigszins aan art deco doet denken. See more..

The building dates from 1648, the year the war with Spain ended. The architect was Willem de Keyser (Amsterdam, Holland). While severe classicism was the dominant style at the time, quite a lot of decoration was added to the upper part of the facade. Nearby was a prison that was also used by the Nazis during WOII to lock-up, torture and execute resistance fighters. For this reason among the older generation 'Crackstate' is still very much associated with the dramatic events during German occupation. De Waag van Dokkum werd in 1752 gebouwd, op de locatie waar een eerder waaggebouw uit 1593 stond. In de Waag werden boter en kaas gewogen en soms opgeslagen. Zij werden in de onmiddellijke omgeving op straat verkocht. De huidige Waag is een opvallend, vrijstaand gebouw, in het historische centrum van Dokkum. De noordgevel, nu voorgevel, laat ionische pilasters zien met boven de daklijst een groot zandstenen opzetstuk met het wapen van de stad. De zuidgevel, nu achtergevel, zonder pilasters, draagt een groot zandstenen opzetstuk met het wapen van Friesland. Op de achtergevel verder een grote plaquette met hoofdtekst "Weegt en Waakt" en een tekst die aan de 16e eeuwse waag en deze 18e eeuwse vervanger refereert. Het Weegt heeft betrekking op de hoofdfunctie van de waag, het Waakt herinnert aan het feit dat in het gebouw ooit ook de stadswacht was ondergebracht. Op het dak een forse dakruiter met opengewerkte lantaarn, luidklok en uurwerk. Nadat het gebouw haar hoofdfunctie verloor, werd het enige tijd gebruikt als brandweerkazerne en daarna als onderkomen van de VVV. Eind 20e eeuw betrok een horeca-onderneming het gebouw. De huidige gebruiker is Grand-Café de Waegh. Het interieur is geheel gemoderniseerd .. geen oude weeginstrumenten meer te zien.See more..
