Visited Franeker as part of tour of my ancestral roots. The town was clean, easy to walk and interesting. The City Hall was an unexpected treat. It was open for tours with printed material explaining the building, its additions and the function of the inside rooms.There was a docent who was welcoming and helpful but with limited English. There was no charge to tour the building.See more..

The impressive church of Hindeloopen dates back to 1638 when it was built on the foundations of the previous church. The bell tower is even as old as 1590, with one original bell surviving the second world war. There are 11 war graves in the adjacent cemetery, of airmen found in the wrecks of allied planes downed by the German occupiers. Altogether very much worth a visit. See more..
An oasis of gently country life Dekema State, north of Leeuwarden, was first build during the 15th century. The moated house and its gardens are restored before the year 2000 and opened to public. The content of the house, with portrait-gallery, antique furniture and the treasures inherited from older generations, demonstrate the life style of a titeld family as it lived in Friesland until the 1930's.See more..
Drenkelingenhuisje - shipwreck house (Drenkeling = drowning man) This typical construction can be found at the north-east coast of the Island of Terschelling. It is located near ‘paal 24’ marker 24, which is about 5.5 km East of Beach pavilion Heartbreak Hotel at the end of the ‘Badweg’ in Oosterend. In 1865 it was approved by the minister of interior affairs that a wooden construction would be erected as a shelter for survivors of shipwrecks. As it is a remote place and a tricky coast with many ships that sank, the shelter would give survivors the ability to spend the first hours there till dawn or till the storm was over. The current shelter is not the original, as it disappeared in a storm in 1962. The cabin you will find now dates from around 2000 and is a very complete replica. It’s a characteristic shelter for Terschelling and very photogenic especially when the clouds and sun cooperate well Getting there; 1. You can walk the 5 km from the dune-crossing (marker 18) at the end of the ‘Badweg’ of Oosterend. 2 By normal bike you can even get closer almost to marker 20 (saves you 2 km of walking) by following the bicycle path that starts near the plaque for ‘Sil de Strandjutter’ which is about 500 meters from the dune-crossing on the ‘Badweg’. You follow the path till the end and walk the last 3 km via the beach. You can actually cycle even further on an unpaved path, but likely the gadflies/horse-flies and mosquitos will drive you crazy. So walking along the beach likely is the better option. 3 you can also rent Beach-bikes (fat bikes) that are allowed to take with you on the beach and have these huge tires. Once meat, butter and cheese were weighed here. 17th century Makkum was flourishing thanks to the port and unlocked hinterland. The weighing house was completed in 1698. Functional in style (the upper floors could also be used for storage) it is still in good shape. Nowadays there is history documentation center.See more..
A bit of a surprise, this city hall in French Louis XIV style built in 1730 (58 years after the French army invaded the Netherlands). Perhaps confirming at the time, Dutch supremacy was over. Mooi gesitueerde toren, opgetrokken in geroest staal wat het geheel een heel robuuste uitstraling geeft. Voor 2 euro kun je de 30 meter hoge toren beklimmen en genieten van het uitzicht. Er is ook een lift aanwezig en er zijn op verschillende niveaus plateaus gemaakt om uit te kijken over de omgeving. Leuk om te bezoeken tijdens een wandeling.See more..
Deze hervormde kerk wordt door de inwoners van Balk "It Breahus" genoemd. De kerk staat aan de Luts, een gekanaliseerd riviertje die kaarsrecht stroomt door het historisch centrum van Balk. Ga je het Breahus bekijken, vergeet dan niet aandacht te geven aan de vele herenhuizen, veelal uit de 18e eeuw, die langs de Luts staan. Misschien dat daarom, na al die mooie panden, het Breahus mij toch wel tegenviel. De kerk werd gebouwd in 1728 onder leiding van de meester-timmerman Roelof Saegman. Het is een eenbeukige zaalkerk met een 3-zijdig gesloten koor. Alleen de voorgevel is goed te zien, zijgevels en achterzijde (het koor) staan ingeklemd tussen belendende huizen. De voorgevel (westgevel) is een z.g. topgevel, met muurankers, hoofdingang en twee grote, hoog geplaatste rondboogvensters. De plaatsing van de vensters in de voorgevel doen sterk denken aan de voorgevels van de meeste "Vermaningen" (doopsgezinde kerken). Boven de hoofdingang een bijbelse spreuk uit het Boek Mattheüs. Op naar verhouding (te) kleine aanzetkrullen beiderzijds de geveltop staat "anno 1728". Op het dak, wat verscholen achter de top van de gevel, een met zink beklede kleine dakruiter met uurwerk, galmgaten en bekroond met een windwijzer. De plek van dakruiter direct achter de topgevel ziet er niet mooi uit (bij de gelijkende gevel en dakruiter van de kerk in Balkbrug heeft men dit beter opgelost, door de top van de gevel in te korten). Een gebrandschilderd raam in de kerk herinnert aan de bouw van de kerk en vermeldt o.a. de naam van de bouwmeester. De overige rondboogvensters, in voor- en zijgevel, zijn voorzien van zo te zien vroeg 20e eeuws glas-in-lood in een stijl die enigszins aan art deco doet denken. See more..

In het kleine Friese dorp Ferwoude staat het 18e eeuwse hervormde kerkje, omgeven door een kerkhof, te pronken op een flinke terp. De gedenksteen boven het toegangspoortje in de zijgevel geeft aan, dat het kerkje in 1767 werd gebouwd. De steen vermeldt de namen van de plaatselijke grietman, ene Baron thoe Schwarzenberg en die van 2 kerkvoogden. We zien voor ons een aardig dorpskerkje, type eenbeukig zaalkerkje, met houten dakruiter. Het toegangsportaal tegen de voorgevel dateert van 1877, toen restauraties plaatsvonden en de kerk werd voorzien van de opvallende gele pleisterlaag. In de voorgevel is een fragment van een grafzerk ingemetseld van Aegidius Eberecht (ca. 1550-1603), die een der eerste predikanten in Ferwoude en Gaast was nadat de oorspronkelijk katholieke kerk omstreeks 1580 overging in protestantse handen. Hij was van Vlaamse afkomst en stierf te Ferwoude aan de pest. Op deze terp stond al sedert de 13e eeuw een katholiek kerkje, gewijd aan de Heilige Pancratius en de Heilige Stephanus. Dit kerkje, sedert de laat 16e eeuw dus hervormd, is in 1762 afgebroken en in 1767 vervangen door de huidige kerk. Een heel aardig kerkje, nogal speels van gele kleur met steenrode details (bijv.
