In the light of Leeuwarden cultural capital 2018, eleven highly artistic fountains were placed in the eleven cities of the big skating tournament. The one in Workum by Cornelia Parker shows larger than life versions of the two lions in the city armour. Highly impressive!See more..

Another creation of Flemish artist Johan Creten is appropriately located in front of the ruin of a Catholic church in Bolsward. The bat symbolizes protection against evil and can often be found on the fronts of cathedrals. At the same time it is also an important animal in an ecosystem under threat. Friesland kreeg naar aanleiding van Leeuwarden als “culturele hoofdstad van Europa” elf fonteinen voor elf steden. Deze is een van de meest geslaagde. De fontein spuit geen water, maar ijs. Zonnepanelen wekken energie op waarmee een deel van het water omgezet wordt in ijs. Knap idee ... en mooi ontworpen.See more..
Leeuwarden in Friesland was European City of Culture in 2018, and as part of that initiative one of the ideas was to install a fountain in each of the 11'cities' (some of them are actually little more than villages). The one in Harlingen is in the harbour, and it is a beautiful sculpture of a whale which blows water through its blow hole. It really does make you think of the fragility of nature and our marine environment. it was definitely one of the best of all the fountains (we saw them all).See more..
One the occasion of the cultural year 2018, eleven artistic fountains were built in the eleven Frisian cities that are stops in the famous 11 city skating tournament (de Elfstedentocht). In Hindeloopen it was designed by the Chinese artist Shen Yuan and inspired by the city coat of arms (the Hinde or female deer). Quite striking and nicely located in the town. See more..

Fountain "De Kievit" ( Peewit or the Northern lapwing ) is one of the 11 fountains in eleven towns in Friesland. The fountain shows a girl standing on the shoulders of a man. She is holding a bird in her hand. The bird is a peewit, an endangered species in Friesland. Under the man's feet, the base of the fountain is a haphazard stack of buckets, jerrycans and wash tubs. Symbolizing that fortune can be temporary is the fate of Sneek city, but perhaps also every human being. Part of the 11 cities 2018 art project.
