The impressive church of Hindeloopen dates back to 1638 when it was built on the foundations of the previous church. The bell tower is even as old as 1590, with one original bell surviving the second world war. There are 11 war graves in the adjacent cemetery, of airmen found in the wrecks of allied planes downed by the German occupiers. Altogether very much worth a visit. See more..

The Broerekerk is a burnt out church in the centre of Bolsward. The shell of the church remains but the roof is gone. It was really interesting seeing it, and the remaining architectural features and gravestones inside the church. the Bat fountain outside is also really good. The day we went there was a busker and the acoustics are excellent.See more..

The Saint Gertrud is the surprisingly large and impressive late gothic historic church of Workum. It was built between 1480 and 1560. The separate tower was never built to full height but completed with an onion shaped pinnacle in 1613. Pulpit and organ are also very A specific feature of this church is the collection of funeral biers (baren in Dutch) which were lavishly decorated by the various professional guilds in Workum. This church is a bit spooky including the stories and obviously the weird idea, that de folks in cellar were mummified. A must do in the neighbourhood! The curch itself is very typical for the surrounding. Try to combine it with the church of Boazum, with its beardless Jesus.See more..

A Dutch reformed church from 1716 (architect Auke Bouwes Disma) located in the center of the village. Austere in style, but in a way charming as well with tower and wooden octagonal shaped clockwork with spire. Note the bronze WOII memorial plaque above the main entrance showing a person releasing a dove and text 'Har dea us frijdom' meaning 'She died for our freedom'.See more..

Not just the church is beautiful, but also the setting on a grassy elevation (terp) in the center of Wolvega is appealing. Rebuilt in 1646 and again after a fire in 1894 the gothic style church bears the marks of history. The church is still in use by the Dutch reformed community in Wolvega. Beetsterzwaag is a nice small village. There are some beautiful buildings on both side of the main street. The villa Lyndenstein with its garden and the bakery in an Art Nuouveau building are the eye-catcher. This small village church from 1804 is located on the street in front of the bakery, next to the fire station. It's in the middle of a small graveyard. It's not open when we're there and it will be opened on saturday as there's a classic concert in the church. We took some pictures and walked around the church and left.See more..

I liked the church dated 1778 because of its simplicity and its location on an elevation in the rather flat surroundings. The church bells were not placed on the small tower, but on 'a chair' which can be easily attended by a believer. I saw this solution (if you will) near many similar churches in the environment e.g. also in Oosterwolde. Worth while to visit.See more..

Jannum is een piepklein dorpje, bestaande uit een paar boerderijen, een paar huizen én een middeleeuws kerkje, dat na de restauratie een kerkmuseum is geworden. In het kerkje worden bijzondere vondsten getoond, zoals zandstenen grafkisten. Deze zijn ook afkomstig uit andere kerken in Fryslân. Het klooster Claercamp was in de Middeleeuwen een zeer belangrijk en groot klooster. Na de reformatie is het klooster afgebroken en de terp is in de 19e eeuw afgegraven. Daarom is er nu in het landschap nauwelijks meer iets te zien, behalve twee grachten. Gelukkig zijn er wel bodemvondsten veilig gesteld. Het museum is gevestigd in een bijgebouw van een boerderij (B&B) dat tegenover het voormalige kloosterterrein ligt. Er zijn vitrines met vondsten, boeken over het klooster en de cisterciënzer orde, een diavoorstelling en de driedelige serie van Omrop Fryslân over het klooster wordt getoond. Much more sizeable than for instance the nearby Genoveva church in Jelsum, but from the same timeperiod (12th century) with additions in later years. Originally adorned with sculptures of Vitus and Anna and no doubt various wall paintings, that were all removed or covered after the reformation around 1580. This church as well served as a burial place for the rich. In this case the Dekema, Burmania and van Cammingha families who also contributed to the maintenance and upgrade of the magnificent structure. PJ. Troelstra, the socialist leader who grew up in Stiens must have observed the contradiction between opulent wealth and privileges of the ruling classes and the shocking poverty of the people who worked the land in the surroundings.See more..
The small village church of Jelsum is located on a mound (terp), as is the village itself. By Dutch standards It is a very old church. The Roman style nave is from the 12th century. The tower was added some 100 years later. Dedicated to a French virgin who is associated with spreading christianity to pagan lands. Visited early a Saturday afternoon in July. The church was open. A very friendly lady was keeping an eye on things.See more..

A bit outside the village center towards the north is the location of the "van Donia" church (Donia being the name of the wealthy Frisian family partly financing the construction in 1660). The church is not longer a place of worshop by the Dutch reformed community. Gothic style, end 17th century built during the heydays of the village, the church is unequalled by newer structures in Makkum. Worthwhile seeing as the church is also surrounded by high trees and a historic cemetery. A truly green site.See more..

Het aan het IJsselmeer gelegen terpdorpje Piaam is een beschermd dorpsgezicht. Terecht, want het dorpje met zo'n 50 inwoners is prachtig. Enkele mooie, grote boerderijen en een heel charmant dorpskerkje. Dit kerkje is oud. Het werd in de 13e eeuw gebouwd als katholieke kerk, gewijd aan Sint-Nicolaas. Nadat de kerk tijdens de Reformatie een protestants gebedshuis werd (wsl omstreeks 1580), is de katholieke naam Nicolaas aan het kerkje blijven kleven. Het bakstenen kerkje is gebouwd in gotische stijl .. een éénbeukig gebouw met vierzijdig gesloten koor. Boven de voorgevel een z.g. dakruiter met luidklok .. dit torentje zou in de 18e eeuw zijn vernieuwd. Een prent uit 1722 toont het kerkje met een echte toren met zadeldak, maar het lijkt me onwaarschijnlijk dat dit piepkleine dorpje ooit een heuse zadeldaktoren bij haar kerk had. Enfin ... prachtig stil dorpje met charmant kerkje .. moeite van een bezoek waard.See more..
De Groate Kerk van Sint-Jacobiparochie (Sint-Jabik) is zeker een blikvanger. Gebouwd in 1843-1844 naar ontwerp van de Friese Thomas A. Romein (1811-1881), die enige tijd stadsbouwmeester van Leeuwarden was. De kerk verving indertijd een vroeg 16e eeuwse kerk. De Groate Kerk is gebouwd in neo-classicistische stijl. Het voorportaal met dorische zuilen, waarboven een z.g. fronton met wapenschild. Op het dak een forse dakruiter, met vierkante basis, open ronde lantaarn gedekt door koepel met spits. Het koepeltje wordt gedragen door zes hoge (wsl houten) zuilen. Achter het voorportaal een rechthoekige zaalkerk, breed maar ondiep. Het kerkgebouw dient al vanaf 1981 als cultureel centrum. Ook de organisatie Jabikspad, een pad van 130 km van Jacobiparochie naar Hasselt, houdt kantoor in de voormalige kerk. Enfin .. ik schreef dat de Groate Kerk een blikvanger is .. helaas niet in positieve zin. Al geen liefhebbers van de neo-classicistische bouwstijl vonden wij de dakruiter echt heel lelijk! Veel te hoog voor het gebouw .. echt uit proportie.See more..
De voormalige Hervormde Kerk in het aan het IJsselmeer gelegen dorpje Gaast (ca. 190 inwoners) heeft een oude luidklok, nl uit 1718. Maar deze dorpskerk aan de Zeedijk 9 zelf is veel ouder. Hij werd gebouwd in de 14e eeuw, dus als katholieke kerk. Oude prenten geven aan dat het kerkje oorspronkelijk geen dakruiter had. De huidige dakruiter (het torentje) dateert van 1763 en werd rond 2014 gerestaureerd. Omstreeks 1580, tijdens de Reformatie, werd het roomse kerkje een hervormd gebedshuis. Als je het zaalkerkje met driezijdig gesloten koor bekijkt bekruipt je het gevoel dat er iets niet klopt aan het exterieur .. dit kan toch geen middeleeuws gebouw zijn? Klopt deels .. in het begin van de 20e eeuw werd het zeer oude kerkje geheel ommetseld met moderne bakstenen. Aannemende dat de 14e eeuwse muren intact zijn gelaten, zien we dus een oud kerkje opgesloten in een bakstenen bekleding uit 1906. Doodjammer!! De raampartijen zullen ook wel 20e eeuws zijn ... een erg lelijk halfrond raam in een zijgevel en spitsboogvensters in de andere zijgevel. Het kerkje is omgeven door een kerkhof. Voor de kerk een opvallend grafmonument, in de vorm van een kleine obelisk, voor een in 1908 overleden predikant. Het kerkje behoort sinds 2018 aan de Stichting Alde Fryske Tsjerken (die hopelijk het kerkje zal ontdoen van het lelijke 20e eeuwse omhulsel). Overigens: verderop aan de Zeedijk ligt een uit 1860 stammend gereformeerd kerkje, sinds einde 20e eeuw niet meer als zodanig in gebruik.See more..

Deze hervormde kerk wordt door de inwoners van Balk "It Breahus" genoemd. De kerk staat aan de Luts, een gekanaliseerd riviertje die kaarsrecht stroomt door het historisch centrum van Balk. Ga je het Breahus bekijken, vergeet dan niet aandacht te geven aan de vele herenhuizen, veelal uit de 18e eeuw, die langs de Luts staan. Misschien dat daarom, na al die mooie panden, het Breahus mij toch wel tegenviel. De kerk werd gebouwd in 1728 onder leiding van de meester-timmerman Roelof Saegman. Het is een eenbeukige zaalkerk met een 3-zijdig gesloten koor. Alleen de voorgevel is goed te zien, zijgevels en achterzijde (het koor) staan ingeklemd tussen belendende huizen. De voorgevel (westgevel) is een z.g. topgevel, met muurankers, hoofdingang en twee grote, hoog geplaatste rondboogvensters. De plaatsing van de vensters in de voorgevel doen sterk denken aan de voorgevels van de meeste "Vermaningen" (doopsgezinde kerken). Boven de hoofdingang een bijbelse spreuk uit het Boek Mattheüs. Op naar verhouding (te) kleine aanzetkrullen beiderzijds de geveltop staat "anno 1728". Op het dak, wat verscholen achter de top van de gevel, een met zink beklede kleine dakruiter met uurwerk, galmgaten en bekroond met een windwijzer. De plek van dakruiter direct achter de topgevel ziet er niet mooi uit (bij de gelijkende gevel en dakruiter van de kerk in Balkbrug heeft men dit beter opgelost, door de top van de gevel in te korten). Een gebrandschilderd raam in de kerk herinnert aan de bouw van de kerk en vermeldt o.a. de naam van de bouwmeester. De overige rondboogvensters, in voor- en zijgevel, zijn voorzien van zo te zien vroeg 20e eeuws glas-in-lood in een stijl die enigszins aan art deco doet denken. See more..

The tower dates from the 13th century, but the nave is much "newer" from the 16th century. The wealthy Hottinga family was one of the main sponsors. Special about the church is the moat surrounding it. It is a relatively big church. Nijland has just over 1000 inhabitants!See more..
De kerk van Anjum werd al in de 12e eeuw vermeld. Een katholieke kerk, gelegen op een terp, gewijd aan Sint-Michaël en gebouwd van tufsteen, waarvan nog steeds resten in het huidige gebouw te zien zijn. Sedert de Reformatie een protestantse kerk (vanaf ca. 1580). Gedurende zijn bestaan onderging de kerk, overigens opvallend groot voor het indertijd kleine dorp, vele verbouwingen. In de 13e eeuw werd het gebouw verlengd, in de 15e eeuw verbreed en werd de koorsluiting vernieuwd. De eenbeukige, grote kerk met een 5-zijdig gesloten koor is het resultaat. Rond de kerk een groot kerkhof. De opvallende steunberen zijn deels 18e eeuws, deels het resultaat van een restauratie in de jaren 70 vorige eeuw. De kerk is nu omgeven door 19e en 20e eeuwse huizen met aan de torenzijde hoge bomen, dus een overzichtskiekje vrijwel onmogelijk. In de 17e eeuw werd er een cachot gebouwd in de kerk, hetgeen doet vermoeden dat de kerk in die tijd ook ruimten herbergde die dienden als raad- en rechthuis. Interieur niet kunnen bekijken .. lees wel over 17e en 18e eeuwse preekstoel en herenbanken. Volgende keer maar eens bekijken. Nog steeds in gebruik bij de hervormde gemeente, die verderop in het dorp ook beschikt over een modern gebouw voor o.a. kerkdiensten. Men bezoekt afwisselend de oude kerk en het nieuwe hervormde centrum, vertelde één van de inwoners van dit rustige dorp. Mooie kerk .. veel groter dan je verwacht in zo'n dorp.See more..
Holwerd e.o. telde al in de 2e helft van de 16e eeuw een flink aantal Menisten, dwz aanhangers van Menno Simons, welke groepering nu tot de doopgezinde kerkgemeenschap wordt gerekend. Men zal in de 16e t/m de 18e eeuw gebruik hebben gemaakt van een schuilkerk. Toen in de 19e eeuw niet-protestanten, w.o. katholieken en doopgezinden, eindelijk toestemming kregen weer kerkgebouwen op te richten, werd in 1850 de Vermaning van Holwerd gebouwd. Doopsgezinden gebruiken de term Vermaning voor zowel de preek als het kerkgebouw. De Vermaning van Holwerd is een merkwaardig ogend gebouw .. een hoge, ondiepe voorbouw met twee bouwlagen, in neo-classicistische bouwstijl, de ingangspartij met een fronton op ionische zuilen .. met daarachter een simpel zaalkerkje. Rond 2015 werd achter het zaalkerkje een labyrint gebouwd. Deze plek zou een hulpmiddel zijn bij het zoeken naar de spirituele kern van de bezoeker en het vinden van een zinvol leven. Ziet er best decoratief uit, dit labyrint, maar mijn eerste associatie was toch met een plek waar primitieve rituelen plaatsvonden. Maar dat ligt aan mij .. de doopsgezinde gemeenschap heeft vast baat bij het labyrint.See more..
