Gothic monumental church
Dedicated to Saint Martin the Roman soldier who became Christian missionary and bishop. Perhaps not a historic figure to be proud of, especially not in Friesland where Christian missionaries were generally not welcome and often killed (Bonifacius being just one example). Anyway the church dating from 1498 in gothic style is well worth a visit. Like many other churches in Friesland it is located on an elevation (terp). Special is the nearby clockhouse added after the original three towers of the church collapsed or were razed. The interior is rather sober. The church passed into Protestant hands after the Reformation in 1580 and as a result a lot of 'superfluous' decorations were demolished or taken out. Still in later ages the organ was brougt back and music again filled the premises.

Grote Kerk
Other name of Martinikerk is "Grote Kerk"( Big Church). It's really a big church for a small town like Sneek. It is not open on sundays so when we were there we could only take some pictures.
