Beautiful stately manor

Once the residence of the Crack family, now in use by the municipal Heerenveen administration. The building dates from 1648, the year the war with Spain ended. The architect was Willem de Keyser (Amsterdam, Holland). While severe classicism was the dominant style at the time, quite a lot of decoration was added to the upper part of the facade. Nearby was a prison that was also used by the Nazis during WOII to lock-up, torture and execute resistance fighters. For this reason among the older generation 'Crackstate' is still very much associated with the dramatic events during German occupation. There is a small memorial, where once the prison stood.
