This is out of the main tourist circuit but you can get there in a private tour. As it is pretty close to Puno (about 20 min) it's cheap. I went there with my now fiancée and we were the only ones, besides the vizcachas. Totally recommended. There's also a site museum at the entrance where you need to buy the tickets. See more..

Private tour to uros islands with yordy and dina image
We had an amazing time with Yordy and Dina exploring the floating islands, learning about the pre-inca culture and how the floating islands are made. Yordy is an excellent guide speaking both Spanish and English. We arranged everything over whatsapp prior to arriving in Puno and met him at his boat at 10am. The tour was three hours, and we learnt a great deal. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone, it is so much better than one of the larger tour groups where they just cram as many people as possible onto a boat and rush you around. It is also possible to spend a night with Yordy and his family on the island, learning to fish with him, how to make crafts, with breakfast and dinner included. We wish we had more time to do this as it would be a unique experience. Please support this local, kind, friendly guide. See more..

  6. 5.0 Iglesia de San Juan de Letran (5 reviews)
    - Unbelievable paintings--some from 16th century--in this village church
    Friday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Churches & Cathedrals
Iglesia de San Juan de Letran image
The church has been converted to a museum today with a small admission fee, but the interior is splendid with many paintings tied to John the Baptist that are quite good--and several are from 16th century or so. It is worth a small detour to see this village, which when we visited, was filled with students heading to or from school, and the town square a nice place for lunch. It appears that this church was unfinished (as many churches in this region of Peru), but what remains is quite delightful. See more..

  11. 4.5 PeruRail - Titicaca (2.347 reviews)
    - The only way to travel Cusco-Puno
Rail Services • Scenic Railroads • Rail Tours
    PeruRail - Titicaca image
This trip will always be a South America highlight. The train itself was absolutely beautiful, making you feel like you had stepped back in time. Journeying through the Andes on the train was simply stunning with the scenery and the opportunity to get out and explore at the highest elevation point (4500m). But what made it really stand out was the service. The staff, in particular Victor, were really attentive and always making sure that you had everything that you needed. Plus there were some surprises we weren't expecting such as an on board band, dancing and a fashion show. Whilst this is an expensive way to journey from Cusco to Puno we would not have changed it as it was worth every penny! See more..

What a place!!! Another very special place near Titikaka lake.... with so many legends and stories it can not be just a coincidence. It was then dismantled, shipped across the Atlantic & Pacific Oceans to Lima, transported by mule train over the Andes to Puno & re-assembled. It then served as a Gunboat in the Peruvian Navy for many years. It has now been restored as a museum piece & is open to visitors. Well worth taking a look. See more..

    - Llachon hospedaje
    Geologic Formations
    Capachica Peninsula image
Llachon is peaceful and beautiful. You can stay in llachon with numerous hospedajes that will offer an all inclusive experience with locals. It's kind of hard to get there and there's not much information. I hope to write some useful stuff here: All buses wait to depart until they are full which usually does not take very long. You start in Puno, take a taxi or walk to the bus terminal for Juliaca, located in avenida Torre at the crossing of Alvarado. You are headed for the bus terminal to Capachica in Juliaca, don't go all the way to the plaza but let yourself be dropped off instead at the bus line azul that will take you to the said terminal. 20. 4.5 Uros Experiences Peru (39 reviews)
    - Terrific Tourist Snare!
    Sightseeing Tours
    Uros Experiences Peru image
A visit to one or more of these floating islands can be very interesting or possibly somewhat depressing. Living is very primitive and residents rely heavily on visiting tourists to buy some of their handcrafts to help fight off poverty. The islands themselves are constructed from reeds that grow in Lake Titicaca's shallows and are anchored to the lake's bottom. The complex building process is described as part of the visit. The boats and small huts that are used by those living here are also made from the reeds as are some of the their household items and handcrafts. We found it to be a fascinating experience and did find a few nice items to purchase. See more..

    - The Sistine chapel of the Andes

    Iglesia San Pedro image
We stopped at this wonderful church on our bus trip between Puno and Cusco, and it is not to be missed. No photos allowed, but we were given a cd with photos when we arrived at the front door. The inside was stunning with every inch decorated, and some of it decorated over! Just beautiful and brought tears to my eyes! PS the shop is really good too! See more..
  25. 4.5 Iglesia de Santiago Apostol (7 reviews)
    - Amazing Church
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Churches & Cathedrals
    Iglesia de Santiago Apostol image
A few miles beyond Juli, with its great churches, Pomata tops them all. Amazing carvings on both the inside and outside. When we got there the church was closed, but someone must have called the guardian, because he showed up and let us in. If it is closed when you arrive, try talking to the police at the station nearby. This is an amazing church and the sleepy town also has a great view of the lake. It's a day to get here from Juli via taxi (20 soles) or collectivo from the center of Juli. Don't miss it! See more..
  26. 4.5 Catedral de Ayaviri (4 reviews)
    - Great tour stop
Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
    Catedral de Ayaviri image
We stopped here on a pre-booked tour from Cusco to Puno. This was a great stop. We did not expect this large ornate cathedral in this small town. Well worth a walk through. If you can go with a guide, you will learn a lot more about what you are looking at. If you stop here on a tour, there is a local shop that lets you climb to the roof to get good views of the area and the cathedral. Its worth a look to look out over the large cathedral and get a good appreciation for it. See more..
  27. 4.0 Uros Floating Islands (6.988 reviews)
    - interesting, but also disappointing
Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent 2-3 hours Islands
    Uros Floating Islands image
We arrived at the port around four in the afternoon and then hopped on the boat to arrive on time at the floating islands of Lake Titicaca. It was interesting because these were made by people and they actually swim in the lake. We docked at a place where the locals tell us how the island they live on was made / in theory. Then they take me to a small house to see how they live. Well, I was very disappointed here. I understand that they also make a living from tourists, but bringing them into the house to sell their hand-made Portuguese was not so nice in my opinion. Anyway, they are nice people and overall we were in a very nice place. See more..

  29. 4.0 La Raya Pass (357 reviews)
    - A shopping stop in the middle of nowhere
Mountains • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Scenic Drives
    La Raya Pass image
La Raya is a mountain range in the Andes (snow could be seen on the mountain peaks in the distance), located on the border of Puno and Cusco County in the middle of nowhere! and is the backdrop to a train stop where the Association of Artisans who congregate in this remote area with all their many wares so that passengers can make purchases. Set amid the incredible mountain scenery, it was something different. The clothing, alpaca woollen jumpers, cardigans, coats, scarves etc were well made and incredible value (US$20 for an alpaca wool jumper). Beware however, the altitude here is 4,319m and I did get a headache. See more..
