We spent two nights in the Ulcumano Ecolodge. Which was way too short, so we have to return. The setting of the lodge in the midst of nature, the beautiful and comfortable huts, the amazing food, the inspiring owner Eduardo and his amazing staff and not to forget the purpose of the lodge, to educate on the importance of conservation of the forest, it’s really impossible to give words to the experience. The absence of Wifi and celular connections only adds to the experience of being disconnected from city life. We learned a lot about the conservation of forrest, the unique plants, trees and animals that live together in a vulnerable and important ecosystem. Go here, with your kids! It will change yours and their vision on nature and on our obligation to help preserve our natural surroundings. And all that while enjoying the best hospitality. See more..

I headed here with a couple of friends for an overnight camping trip. The rock formations are absolutely stunning. There is a nice walking loop that can be taken with a guide who will point out interesting formations such as the llama formation or the turtle formation. Afterwards we headed out into the Sanctuary to find a spot to camp. Since this is at such high elevation walking can be extremely strenuous. It also was VERY cold at night. I would recommend a day trip here. It can be complicated to reach by public transport but it is possible. Ask for Huallyay and folks will be able to help you out. There are about 2 stores/restaurants along the road near the sanctuary entrance. See more..

- Fantastic Rock Forest at Huayllay

This is a fantastic rock forest between Cerro de Pasco and Huayllay. The drive is spectacular passing amazing landscapes, mines and mining villages. To get there take a collectivo from opposite the bus station for about 5 Soles. Ask to stop at the rock forest, about 1 hour. Entrance 1 sole - kid guides charged 20 soles which is worth it for a group (you may get them cheaper). You can spend a whole day or more as there are plenty of walks. If you want to stay longer there is a basic hostel opposite the entrance that serves decent food. The rock forest is huge and spectacular with amazing shapes - there are reasonable marked trails but it is possible to get a little lost. I would recommend paying one of the kids to guide you around(in Spanish) - they point out the shaped rocks such as elephant, dinosour, cobra, monks, tortoise, etc. Took about 40 minutes waiting in the rain to get a Collectivo back to Cerro de Pasco. With entire family we decided to buy a "cruise" over Laguna El Oconal. 4 soles per person for one hour wasn't a big expense. Also after that you could get free (hands and feets) peeling done by small fishes, which were located close to "harbor". Rancho Ruffner always does typical Oxapampa’s gatherings. Including Pachamanca, rodeo and other activities that all ages can enjoy together. The space is surrounded by nature. The staff is very knowledgeable within their craft and are always welcoming people who want to know more about Oxa and its people. They even have a small store that offers great coffee and sweets made at home. The barista is very knowledgeable as well.Highly recommended. Local Artisan beer is offered too. This is a pretty and interesting church on a square off the main square in Cerro de Pasco. It is surrounded by derelict buildings bought by the mining company and is only about 100 meters from the mine hole - so probably won't be around for much longer as the mine company will inevitably buy it out to mine the silver and other metals in the ground underneath. This area is very close to one of the only areas you can walk to-to get and unobscured view of the giant mine pit. See more..

Just 200m from the giant mine hole in Cerro de Pasco - if you want to visit go now as the mine company are rapidly eating up the whole town. This is an interesting square with a giant statue of a man with a syringe(underneath is a souvenir shop that sells plastic syringes in his memory) - he apparently diagnosed a rare illness. The streets around are interesting with roads leading to the opencast mine(derelict buildings bought by the mine company), another corner leads into the market. There are also a couple of hotels, shops and restaurants. Cerro de Pasco is an interesting town, especially if you are into urban decay! See more..

Totally not accessible in the rain season. A real danger due to the river rising. Do not intend crossing it, the stream is too strong and would sweep you down the waterfall.
