Ander is an excellent guide, very educated and he knows a lot about history, archeology and various sciences. He is very calm and patient and he is always ready to explain all ambiguities. It is especially important to me that he speaks excellent English. I felt not like I was on a paid tour, but like a friend was taking me to show me the sights of his area. Highly recommendation! Museo De La Marioneta "Manuel Taica Llalle" image
The works of art in the museum mesmerized me. There are puppets, which depict the Peruvian people and their lifestyle. There is also a live puppet show available for all ages. Visitors can record and take pictures of it. Another reason why I recommend going to the museum is that the guide is the grandson of the founder and will tell you how the museum was built up over three generations. To sum up, I would highly recommend visiting this gorgeous museum close to the main square. The works of art are definitely a must-see, and I’m sure it is worth a visit, especially for children, who can have fun by learning about the Peruvian and Cajamarca history. See more..

  10. 4.5 Cumbemayo (754 reviews)
    - Go with Manuel at Cumbe Mayo Tours
    Ancient Ruins
    Cumbemayo image
There are plenty of reviews here to support making a trip to Cumbemayo, so I won't get into that. To get the most out of your trip, go with Manuel Portal Cabellos at Cumbe Mayo Tours. This humble, soft-spoken man speaks English, has been guiding for 30+ years, is a true academic and historian, and has a genuine passion and desire for sharing his culture and history with tourists. He is the author of "Oro y Tragedia de Los Incas" and reads 16th-century manuscripts, making notes in miniscule scribble on post-it notes, in his free time. He and a few other local guides run Cumbe Mayo Tours together, which is right on the plaza (Jr Amalia Puga 635). They offer the usual itineraries that every other office on the plaza does but usually for a better price because you're dealing directly with the guides. Not only did I get amazing cultural and historical information during the tour, but Manuel was the one who set the trail that tourists walk through at Cumbemayo. He knows every physical detail and unique feature of the landscape by heart. He also does longer backcountry trips through the area, which you should ask about if you're into that sort of thing. The landscape is stunning, and the loop that tourists walk during the day only scratches the surface. See more..
  11. 4.5 Plaza de Armas de Cajamarca (540 reviews)
    - Great City, nice plaza with beautiful cathedrals

Plaza de Armas de Cajamarca image
Beautiful center around the Plaza de armas which is telling some interesting history. Some nice activities can be done around Cajamarca. In general it’s affordable and not overcrowded, good restaurant options and accommodations available. Definitely worth to think about to visit the region (also Chachapoyas ;-). It’s reachable easily from the coast or from Lima with good long distance buses. Cajamarca was really nice and we felt save. Overall, we were very happy to have done a stop in Cajamarca. See more..
  12. 4.5 Cerro Santa Apolonia (521 reviews)
    - Excellent View
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Cerro Santa Apolonia image
I suggest taking a taxi to the top and then, if you are fit, walk down the steps back to the Plaza de Armas. Our taxi cost us S/.5 and entrance to the gardens above Santa Apolonia was S/.1 each. The view over the city and of the mountains is excellent. We were the only visitors to the gardens and we only saw a few people during the whole visit. See more..
  13. 4.5 Iglesia de Belen (150 reviews)
    - Excellent
    Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
    Iglesia de Belen image
In contrast the the cathedral, Belen is only closed on Monday's for maintenance. IIt is really well worth visiting. The church is very well maintained and lit and the paintings and decoration on the walls seem so fresh. Included in the ticket price are 2 hospitals and 2 museums. The layout of the exhibits is very good and all the locations are spotlessly clean. For only £1 or $1.50 this has to be one of the bargain visits in Peru. We had to share the visit with one other person! See more..

Big enterprise this-quite complex and very well run. There are lots of options and permutations here – the pool, hydro, massage, Sauna, health spa, and so on-something for everyone. And at the same time the legacy of the Inkas runs through everything and has not been forgotten. A happy place - thank you and once again congratulations. See more..
  23. 4.0 Ventanillas de Otuzco (400 reviews)
    - Good short excursion from Cajamarca
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Ventanillas de Otuzco image
It's an interesting site and makes for a good brief trip from Cajamarca. I wouldn't go with a tour as it's only a small site and there are some info boards in Spanish and English there. To travel from Cajamarca walk north from the Plaza De Armas up Jiron Del Batan until it becomes Revilla Perez and at the corner of Revilla Perez and Los Gladiolos wait for a collectivo with a C in the window and with Ovalo and Otuzco listed as destinations. The journey takes about 20 mins and will cost you 1 sol. They'll drop you right outside the entrance. It's 5 soles entry and yes there will probably be a teenager offering to tell you the history of the site and some women at the top selling some some mystery fruit. There's a nice spot to sit and eat some lunch on some rocks at the top with a great view up the valley and over the town itself. We were there for an hour but 40 mins of that was sitting enjoying the view! See more..

    Convento de San Francisco image
The museum is in need of some upkeep and the art needs restoration. But it is a very interesting place to get a flavour of the history of Cajamarca, particularly church history. The collection of telephones may be relevant in 100 years! The catacombs were amazing See more..

  30. 4.0 McCuy's (21 reviews)
    - She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie (Eric Clapton)
    Bars & Clubs
    McCuy's image
Long time I didn't hear this Clapton song (very retro and not politically correct now), anyway the place is great and if you get your chair in the balcony you have a side view of main square and the tower from San Francisco church on your face. As I said, music is great and decoration is quite surprising. Top expensive booze is what you find in duty free for around 30 bucks, which is explained by local purchasing power. Cuy Is quechua name for guinea pig and McCuy sounds strange but it's original with no doubt. If I come again to this city, I will be here again for sure. BTW, right now I'm listening The Doors.
