My girlfriend and I just did the 2 day Choquequirao mountain bike tour out of Cusco with Renzo and it was amazing. If you want a truly local experience and you love biking this is a must do tour. All the local people we met along the way were very welcoming and friendly, the archeological site on the first day was very cool and we got to visit a local farm and try some delicious fresh produce. Our campsite we stayed at was hands down the coolest place I’ve stayed since being here. The second day was a beautiful bike ride through the canyon which ended the day at some relaxing hot springs. Renzo is the best guide who goes out of his way time and time again to give you a very local experience. Definitely recommend this tour!! See more..

  10. 5.0 Chonta Viewpoint (1 review)
    - See the Andean Condors from above
Spent More than 3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Lookouts
Just outside Limatambo, find the sign and turn off of pavement to drive 45 minutes up (!) the gravel road. Park and pay the 20 soles entrance fee, then walk for 2 hours to the third of the three established viewpoints. You'll find yourself on a promontory over a deep blue canyon. At about 3 pm, the condors will soar below you (if they're flying that day). Sometimes there are many, sometimes none; sometimes they are close, sometimes far away. I saw four, all pretty far away. But they are spectacular, and it's worth the effort to just have a chance to see them. The walk is at altitude and slightly challenging, so it's for fit and prepared hikers only. Do not go without water and a piece of fruit. See more..

  12. 4.5 Sondor Archaeological Site (53 reviews)
    - A Day in the Country: Ruins and Lake
    Ancient Ruins
    Sondor Archaeological Site image
The Sondor archeological site is about 30km outside Andahuaylas, and beautiful Lake Pacucha lies about an hour’s walk downhill. Sondor was home to the Chankas (1000-1450 AD) and later conquered by the Incas (1450-1532). It has a stunning mountaintop setting, with verdant fields clinging to steep slopes below and mountains soaring beyond river valleys on either side. Restored constructions include a massive pyramid, housing, and walls with trapezoidal niches in classic Inca style. There are also unreconstructed walls. It takes about an hour to tour the site (2 soles entrance). Lake Pacucha is ringed by modest adobe settlements and fields. It makes a pleasant stroll downhill from Sondor. In Andahuaylas, catch a colectivo van at the corner of Av. Martinelli and Av. Casafranca (3 soles). Confirm with the driver that he’s going to Sondor, not just the lake. You'll need to walk the last kilometer up to the site. To return, colectivo vans and taxis pick passengers up around the lake. See more..

  14. 4.5 Santuario Nacional de Ampay (41 reviews)
    - 4800 meters
    Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Santuario Nacional de Ampay image
This hike is not just a day hike. Plan to camp. Winter camping gear is reccomended. Plenty of water available throughout the park. No open fires. Trail is not well marked and breaks up. Lots of rural people living in park. This park is not really well known and you can hike here without seeing another tourist. Especially in the higher altitudes. The hike starts out at 2900 meters and the first lake is at about 3250 meters. A fast hiker can make it in an hour. Spend the night there and get used to the altitude. Make the second lake on day two and the summit on day three, returning to the second lake (that is spring fed) for camp on the third night. Returning to the info center on the morning of the fourth day. If you try to do it in 2 days, you will be running. See more..
  15. 4.5 Aldea de los Pitufos (5 reviews)
    - Worthwhile visit to this unique spot
Spent More than 3 hours Geologic Formations
    Aldea de los Pitufos image
We took a long weekend to explore the area for 3 days. We visited the Rock Forest, Smurf House, Hot Springs, Pacucha Lake and Sondor (a Chanka culture archaeological site). We saw the rock formations in the afternoon and then the following morning, they cover quite a large area and our kids thought it was a great place for hide and seek (take a bit of care with younger children as there are some steep parts), we camped with the family at the Smurf House and it was a truly unique experience! It was frosty in the morning, so come prepared for chilly nights and it was the end of rainy season so it's worthwhile travelling in a 4WD if you go at the wet time of year as we saw some cars stuck. Fantastic experience! See more..
  16. 4.5 Complejo Arqueologico de Curamba (5 reviews)
    - Allein
Spent More than 3 hours Ancient Ruins
    Complejo Arqueologico de Curamba image
It is an Inca administrative center. Curamba presents a rather unique urban planning, distinguishing various sectors comprising a large square, a truncated two levels (ushnu) and a kallanka pyramid. Around the plaza there are 50 architectural structures of rectangular and square, grouped in sets or "courts" with internal squares. See more..

    - Fantastic!

    Saywite image
The fantastic place that I am about to describe is located in Abancay the capital city of Apurimac. Approximately its distance is around 45 km from Abancay. I found it pretty interesting because it has different archeological remains. It has a monolith that due to its importance was put into circulation in a collection of Peruvian coins. This huge place not only has that monolith but other attractions that have an important archeological interest. It is said that it was regarded as a religious area. If you go not only visit this amazing stone, if you walk a bit further you will find as I described previously more interesting remains. See more..
  20. 4.0 Mirador Taraccasa (23 reviews)
    - Nice view over Abancay
    Spent 1-2 hours Lookouts
    Mirador Taraccasa image
Mirador Taraccasa is a beautiful viewpoint on the northwest side of the city. There is possibility to take combi #4 (for 1.5 soles) which has end stop directly by the entrance to mirador taraccasa or taxi which cost me 10 soles. 1 sole has to be payed as entrance fee to the viewpoint (probably because of the small zoo with condors). It offers beautiful outlook over Abancay and nearby mountains (see pictures). It is worth to visit Abancay (at least for one day)...it can be used as acclimatization point on the journey to Cusco, as Abancay is at 2400 meters. It helped me a lot, I didnt havemuch problems than in Cusco due to the altitude. See more..

Twenty minutes or so out of town by taxi - wait and return for a highly reasonable S/.7.00. One of the first colonial haciendas, dating back to 1592, which in itself is of much interest. There is a 150 year old sugar cane press to marvel at, and a collection of wari textiles - plus much more. See more..
