   I have been to many places around Indonesia, but this was my first time in Bunaken. It is mostly walls dives. I found the coral colours to be brilliant. Turtles where everywhere! And focusing in on the many small nudibranchs - could have spend so much time in just a few square meters! Water visibility was tremendous for most every dive (15m to 25m). And the water temperature was fantastic for me as I tend to get cold easily - but not here in 30C water. On the complete opposite end - we did a trash dive for Project Aware.    Bira cape is definetly wirth going to, but dont stay at Pasir putih panjang cause its overcrowded and ugly. They are also building a big ugly cement structure in the middle if the beach- will be even worse once its finished. Go to Bara beach and stay at some of the wonderful places up on the cliffs.    Firstly, this is a great trip out from Makassar, especially if you are staying near the airport. If you go by taxi it's about 140000 one way. However, we travelled by pete pete, the small blue local vans. Get yourself to Terminal Daya then pick up another pete pete to Pangkep. Ask them to drop you at Rammang Rammang (pronounced Ramung Ramung!). You then have to walk about 1km to the boat pier. It costs 200000 for a smaller boat for 4 then a little more for bigger boats. Sometimes they insist on foreigners having their own boat but we managed to share with a group of Indonesians to reduce the cost. The trip is stunning. You travel for about 25 mins by river, through the karst to a plateau of rice fields surrounded by hills. It is spectacular! You are free to wander where you like but there is a route around taking in caves and small cafes. For a tiny entrance fee you can also stop at a small limestone village on the return journey. It's a really great trip out if you have a spare day in Makassar and if you travel by pete pete the return journey only costs 20000 each. See more..

   Wow!! We rented a motorbike from our hotel and headed up towards Batutumonga. The route we took has us climbing upwards through the rice paddies. We knew there was supposed to be a lovely panorama at the top, but WOW!!! We were blown away. Just past Batutumonga, you can also find the graves in the giant stone at Loko'mata. I recommend checking them out. We had spent the day before on a tour of different gravesites in the region, and so on this day we weren't really looking for any specific gravesites. However, Loko'mata is very unique and worth a quick visit. We took another route down to Rantepao from Batutumonga, but I would recommend seeking out the rice paddy route for the way up. The scenery just builds and builds until you are finally at the top. We must have stopped ten times to take photos on the way up! See more..

    The Saluopa waterfall is magnificent - highly recommended! Besides the waterfall, do go on treks in the surrounding forest. I went with Petrus on two hikes - once in the day and once at night to see the nocturnal tarsiers. Petrus is an excellent wildlife guide who really cares for nature. He is enthusiastic about showing you how ingenious the local people are in using the bountiful natural resources of the forest and very knowledgeable. I learnt a lot about local flora and fauna. The tarsiers are adorable little critters - not to be missed! I should also add that Petrus was very patient and considerate of my urban clumsiness, and was attentive and always needful of safety. The details of this fort complex are sketchy (be careful what you believe of what is in the internet - especially about Maleo eggs), but a fascinating complex to visit, with commanding views over Danau Limboto. The forts are small, all about the same size, and the external walls are in very good condition. There is a long set of steps from the entry gate to the top - but it is also possible to drive up. At the time of writing there was no entry fee, but that may change as COVID passes and things return to normal. This fort is worth visiting for views over the lake, and the views of the lower fort from the upper one. There are a number of quirky signs around the complex to keep visitors amused. All of the items were tasty and delicious. Our table was one of the row beside the lake with an undisturbed view of the whole magnificent lake.     Entry to this site is Rs15,000 per person. It is a very beautiful and well maintained garden around a large paved pathway that winds up a hill with great views from the top. Along the way are high quality life-sized statues of the Stations of the Cross. At the top there is a chapel and amphitheatre. This would be a nice pilgrimage site for Catholics. For us it was a nice walk through lovely gardens with birds and butterflies. Whilst it is up hill, it is not a challenging walk. The living ‘rails’ along the path are made from tree-fern stumps and ropes which have become small gardens in their own right.     i went to Olele Beach by myself, riding bike about 21 km from the city, almost given up at the first 15 km, because i think i had enough beach view along the road. but my friend which i met online suggested me to visit this place. i stop and turn around and stopped at some local area to buy water and eat some food, then they told me that the Olele Beach was just 4 km to go from the place i stop. it makes me pump up to ride again and reach the place. and yes, the view is amazing. if you plan to visit and snorkel here, i suggest you to add more friend, the more friend you bring here the cheaper price you will get. people of gorontalo is super nice people.     I set up a tour with Caraka Travelindo , ([email protected]) and was completely guided from airport to the Karst and dropped back to Makassar. I was picked up at the airport and driven 45 minutes to the small dock in Rammang Rammang, then a 20 minute motorized canoe ride to the nearby village then a 20 minute walk to the entrance to the Karst and that began the trip to view the hand prints and stalactites & stalagmites of the Karst- 45 minutes will get you to the back of the cave with stops along the way for photos and breathers-- learn to stoop low and be careful, can be slippery.     We really liked visiting Kali Falls (Air Terjun Kali). Really nice waterfall and interesting walking through the jungle to get there along the concrete steps. Don’t follow google maps - drive your scooter to Kali Village (to the north) and the entrance to the walk is from the top of a path there (you can just ask one of the locals where to go, we gave 20,000 Rp for parking to a local). As others have said, the concrete steps are quite slippery so I would say best for people with good shoes on and good balance. Would recommend to visit!
