This is the 1st time I have been to the Jiefang Monument after 7 years. It is a monument to commemorate Chinese victory in World War 2. When I was there in 2013, it looked old and run down, surrounded by skyscrapers (even though it used to be the tallest decades earlier). When I was there in 2019, it looked better maintained. There is even a garden surrounding the monument with bright yellow flowers amid nice greenery. It seems that with nationalism on the rise in China under the current leader Xi, more emphasis is placed on nationalistic monuments. This is a blessing as historical monuments are better maintained with a fresh breadth of life. See more..

We bought the river cruise tickets at HongYa Dong. Early bird tickets at 80 yuan per pax for the category 118/138 yuan cruises. Good deal. Complimentary mini vans rides will pick you up at 15 mins interval at the main road of HongYa Dong to Chaotianmen. The cruises leave every hour till 10:30pm. The cruise starts at chaotianmen on yangtze river side towards Sheraton Hotel and then make a u turn and cruise back where you can see HongYa Dong in full view and light up. Beautiful. On board, there are drinks and snacks available at nominal prices and even a face mask changing show. Go early to get a seat on the roof top otherwise you will have to stand throughout the 1 hour cruise. The cruise we were on had English and Chinese narration however sadly it was inaudible. This was one of my favorite excursions during a Viking River cruise in China. Disembarking the ship, we walked through the town and marketplace before reaching the suspension bridge leading to the Red Pagoda built alongside the cliff. The trip across the bridge, known as 'the drunken bridge', is an experience in itself. With many people crossing it at one time, balance is difficult but not impossible. The pagoda is twelve stories and a bit of a rough climb. If you are claustrophobic or have motor issues, the trip up may not be advisable. The stairs are steep and rugged and each level narrows but there are handrails. Once you begin the ascent, you cannot turn back and have to continue on. I went here with some friends in december 2012. We had hired a private guide to take us there on a day trip. This place was truly amazing, its a forest of stone on the top of a mountain, doesnt get more unique than that. Our guide told us that it was very unusual that he got to take tourist there, witch is very strange. The veiws are spectacular and it feels like you walked into a fairy tale. Beside us there were not more than 20 other people visiting this large site, all chinese of course. We probably were the only westerners there for a long time. The locals got very curious when we got out of the car. Not in a bad way, they were nice, and no one tried to sell you anything. Go to this place if you can! You wont regret it! Just before you enter the visitors parking lot there is a restaurant with a great veiw of the valley. Have lunch there if you can. It vas a great place. See more..

This really is a gem of a temple. Currently standing proud in the middle of an area that has been cleared for yet more construction. Right in the heart of the downtown area, this temple thrives, worshipers and tourists seem only too happy to part with the 10RMB entrance fee just to grab a few moments of tranquility. When you have been to as many temples as I have in China they do all tend to look the same, but this one is different. It's location strikes a contrast in this mega city and just by being well used puts it above the average. The main hall contains over 500 Arhat statues, each brightly depicting a person that has been elevated from the wheel of life. In Chongqing we visited the Hugang Guild Hall – one of the few buildings to survive WWII. It is beautifully decorated and has life sized figures in various displays reflecting life during the Qing Dynasty. It has an Opera Hall and temple as well as a Guild Hall inside as well. The temple is in honour of the first emperor – Yu, who built the first dam to control destructive flooding of the rivers. We saw artists doing more snuff vase painting as well as leaf painting of Bunyan tree leaves. This attraction is well worth a visit as it is so interesting and unlike many places, is not overcrowded. Quite fascinating and very sad. This prison held members of the Communist Party who were then tortured and murdered at location before and after the rise to power of Communism in China. Can see the torture chambers and dungeon-like cells the prisoners were kept in. A moving experience. Environment is a nice change to the metropolis, though it is still located quite close to Shapingba CBD. Worth the visit if you're in the area. 10 Yuan entry per person. Guided tours available but in Mandarin. There are English translations to most of the information boards. Some of my friends hiked up the mountain but we took a bus. Don't feel like you are cheating taking the bus, cable car, or motorbike because once you get there you will be hiking a lot keep an eye on the map and signs and be sure to visit the various peaks. Take the cable car down!! the view is incredible and it is super fun jumping on and off of a moving cable car. The one thing I would do differently is hiring a motorbike going up. Furong cave is one of the largest and most beautiful caves in a world and of course it's must-visit attraction in Wulong area! Once you did the first step downstairs, you just enter to awesome, almost extraterrestrial environment! Different colours of lighting beautifully emphasize stalactites and stalagmites. You fast understand that every structure is unique and have its own very-very long story. There are some incredibly interesting objects, such as 1000-arrows hall, cave grape, sleeping Buddha and snow-white 20-meters stone waterfall! To get this place we used train from Chongqing to Wulong, which rides 4 times per day, then got bus terminus by municipal taxi (only 5 yuan) and then got Furong cave by a bus through JiangKou town. You should keep in mind that the cave is cold and wet place and wear appropriate clothes. Beishan is one of five Dazu Rock Carving sites near the city of Dazu in the Chongqing municipality of China. The main site is Baodangshan and tickets may be bought at either site to visit both. The carvings at Beishan are older (650 AD) than Baodangshan (1200 AD) but Baodangshan is a much larger, much more developed, site --- if you have time to visit two sites then Beishan should be your choice for the second. The day my wife and I were there we were the only visitors (Baodangshan had hundreds on the same day). The carvings are interesting but not as well preserved and many heads have been stolen. I would hope that someday the Chinese government would go from the current protection posture they have at Beishan to really preserving the site and providing more extensive labeling, as they have at Baodangshan. My wife and I visited the tourist area at The Three Gorges Dam In October 2018 as part of a two week tour of China. The dam is huge HUGE. The tourist area is on the dam site, and has architecture, fountains and several viewing areas. A series of escalators take you up to the terraces which provide the best views. I took this optional excursion through a Gate1 tour package on the Century Sun Yangtze river cruise. Luckily our group had its own boat. Our local guide "Lisa" was very friendly and knowledgeable. She sang songs for us, told us some history of the area, and what modern day life is like. Near the end of the ride, she did try to sell some books, tea, and carved animals, but we never felt pressured to buy anything. The quiet boat was nice enough with several wooden benches and a small back deck. Luckily we had a covered roof since it was drizzling/raining the day we went. Even with the rain, this blue-green stream was beautiful. It is surrounded by giant cliffs and mountains. We got to see several cave and cliff coffins. We went to Dazu over the CNY Spring festival to visit the carvings. In fact it is 2 sites one in Beishan and the other in Baoding. You can buy a combined ticket for both sites for rmb120 or rmb90 for Baoding and rmb70 for Beishan. No discount for kids. We went to Baoding and as expected it was busy and a little congested with visitors and tour groups. However do not miss this one. This is a real must do and one of the best attraction we had visited. The carvings are absolutely spectaculiar and should not be missed if you intend visiting Chongqing. See more..

I absolutely enjoyed coming here but then what's not to love about a buddhist temple. With visitors quietly going about their prayers, candles burning in the sand pits, incense wafting and the soft sounds of women chanting, it was a serene and beautiful place to spend some time. There was nothing hurried about the place and indeed, aesthetically, there were so many opportunities for beautiful photographs one should visit here with an open mind and just let the experience wash over you rather than rush in and just 'look, snap and go'. It is a functioning temple after all so you will get the best experience by soaking in the atmosphere! It was a cold, drizzly, misty day but that actually enhanced our visit. Due to the very few visitors, the place is extremely tranquil which makes viewing the smaller and finer carvings much more enjoyable. This sinkhole is the deepest and widest sinkhole in the world! I visited the "Xiaozhai Tiankeng Sinkhol" aka "Heavenly Pit" in Mai 2019. The visit was amazing, for many reasons. The site is almost virgin. There is no elevator to access the sinkhole and little construction at the bottom of the pit. The landscapes are fantastic, and offer great possibilities for photos, both outside and inside the sinkhole. The site is maintained cleaned and there were not so many visitors, this place is still unknown to most tourists. If you're into karst landscapes, don't hesitate, this place is for you! See more..
