4.0Shi Bao Zhai(111 reviews) - Rugged climb but worth it! Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Ancient Ruins • Religious Sites
This was one of my favorite excursions during a Viking River cruise in China. Disembarking the ship, we walked through the town and marketplace before reaching the suspension bridge leading to the Red Pagoda built alongside the cliff. The trip across the bridge, known as 'the drunken bridge', is an experience in itself. With many people crossing it at one time, balance is difficult but not impossible. The pagoda is twelve stories and a bit of a rough climb. If you are claustrophobic or have motor issues, the trip up may not be advisable. The stairs are steep and rugged and each level narrows but there are handrails. Once you begin the ascent, you cannot turn back and have to continue on. The view at the top is beautiful and I felt worth the climb.See more..
4.5Dazu Rock Carvings Beishan Site(46 reviews) - Beishan Site - Dazu Rock Carvings Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Ancient Ruins
Beishan is one of five Dazu Rock Carving sites near the city of Dazu in the Chongqing municipality of China. The main site is Baodangshan and tickets may be bought at either site to visit both. The carvings at Beishan are older (650 AD) than Baodangshan (1200 AD) but Baodangshan is a much larger, much more developed, site --- if you have time to visit two sites then Beishan should be your choice for the second. The day my wife and I were there we were the only visitors (Baodangshan had hundreds on the same day). The carvings are interesting but not as well preserved and many heads have been stolen. I would hope that someday the Chinese government would go from the current protection posture they have at Beishan to really preserving the site and providing more extensive labeling, as they have at Baodangshan.See more..
4.5An Ju Ancient Town(5 reviews) - A nice day out away from the bustle of Chinese life Ancient Ruins
An ancient settlement located not far from downtown Tongliang. Take the bus from the south bus station and 20 minutes later you are in the small village of An Ju. Built alongside a river the town is not a museum piece but a lived in remnant of old China. A Buddhist temple as well as many old streets give you plenty to explore, but don't come if you are expecting the usual "tourist fayre" because this is real life and a fair way off the beaten track.See more..

4.0Lukong Ancient Town(1 review) - One of the best ancient towns in chongqing Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Ancient Ruins
A very interesting and laid-back place that is very very local. We were there when cctv was filming a tv show using lukong town as the background which hopefully wont turn this town into another commercialize old town. Strongly recommend to take a river cruise (lower portion) not the upper portion where you can stop along an ancient big cave (zhao yang cave) with 7 smaller caves below and 5 smaller caves on top. Mind you, there is no proper stairs leading to the upper caves you have to go through tunnel and is very dark but worth the view when you are up on the upper caves. Highly recommended if you are in chongqing.See more..
