Beishan Site - Dazu Rock Carvings

Beishan is one of five Dazu Rock Carving sites near the city of Dazu in the Chongqing municipality of China. The main site is Baodangshan and tickets may be bought at either site to visit both. The carvings at Beishan are older (650 AD) than Baodangshan (1200 AD) but Baodangshan is a much larger, much more developed, site --- if you have time to visit two sites then Beishan should be your choice for the second. The day my wife and I were there we were the only visitors (Baodangshan had hundreds on the same day). The carvings are interesting but not as well preserved and many heads have been stolen. I would hope that someday the Chinese government would go from the current protection posture they have at Beishan to really preserving the site and providing more extensive labeling, as they have at Baodangshan.

    Small but Recommended
The Beishan Rock Carvings are much smaller in scale, comparing with the main rock carvings in Baodingshan. It is worth a visit if one has time. I would highly recommend it if time allows. Ticket is 35 Chinese dollars during light season (winter 2017) or 15 Chinese dollars if one has a student ID. A tour guide costs 170 Chinese dollars, and the tour lasts a little bit more than one hour. I didn’t get a guide because there is only one guide, and she was giving a tour. English tour may not be available at this location (I didn’t see it on the price board); it is available at Baodingshan for 260 Chinese dollars a tour. The rock carvings at Beishan is very different. Almost all the carvings are inside a man-made socket (like a giant hole carved into the mountain). Almost all carvings are buddhas and other religious features. If I understand the carvings correctly, most are shown good wishes, unless Baodingshan Carving where hell is depicted in details. Without a guide, it took me about 45 minutes to tour the carvings twice. I wish I had a guide so I could understand more. There is a pagoda near the carvings, and the receptionist on duty recommended me to go. It is quiet a walk over! Be prepared!!! If one doesn’t have a car, one needs to walk up 350 stairs to a hill top. The pagoda isn’t the best part; there are two giant Buddhas who are shouldering the pagoda. Very magnificent! Overall, recommend time to spend - 3 hours with a lot of climbing and walking!

Nice but only visit of you have spare time
the carvings are nice but not as good as the main Dazu Rock Carvings. Would suggest first priority is for the main Dazu site and the Beishan site is only visited if you have spare time. Not as impressive or natural as the main site but the carvings are better preserved as they are in a grotto. Quite a lot of steps to climb to get to the site. Would say that it is not worth hiring a guide. Description of the exhibits are both in English and Chinese
