The Zhongshan Square is surrounded by some architecturally interesting buildings. Some of the tallest and most brightly lit towers are around this square as well. There are quite a few restaurants nearby and it is conveniently located. The square is not too large so plan to spend less than an hour here and maybe a little longer walking around. Zhongshan Square metro station is here and exit B will get you right into the square but be careful if you want to cross the road as traffic is quite chaotic here. It is a principle I travel by. When you end up in a new place - find a park and spend time there. This is where you find the spirit of the town or city. How the citizens treat their parks will tell you who they are. I go to Shenyang regularly on business. I specifically stay at a hotel two blocks away from the park. Early morning I will meet the rising sun with a jog. The smile that was born on my face when I discovered this park pops back when I reach the pathways that lead through the park. I will also meet the smiles of the early-morning runners, walkers, cyclists, chatters, anglers, tennis, tai-chi, basket ball......and the brids and trees and flowers. Over the weekends I will spend a longer day here. I go for a long run one way and spend the rest of the morning strolling back as the park gets busier and the families arrive. Before coming to this national park in CHINA, I have already admired autumn colours in Korea, Europe, New England. I was pleasantly surprised that the autumn foliage was in much greater abundance in this national park in autumn compared to Korea & Europe. We were welcomed with a riot of colours ranging from golden yellow to orange&scarlet. First, when I checked the map location for this attraction was wrong. This park is a short walk SE from the train station. Along the main road there are small vendors selling goods and snacks on the weekends (in good weather). Tickets are 50RMB, though on slow days there is not always a person selling tickets and you can just walk in. A temple complex has existed on this site for a long time, but the current version was rebuilt after WWII. The temples are large and well maintained (bright colors). Contained in the main one is a larger sitting Buddha. This is also home to the White Pagoda (this park is also referred to as White Pagoda Park). There is also a nice fish pond on the site. A nice place to spend an afternoon or just hang out.See more..

On the approach along the base of the mountain, you may note large sealed tunnel entrances, these tunnels were made and used by the Japanese during WWII. If with a local person, like me, you can have a leisurely climb up the side starting at a point about 1.5km away, at the crest are many pine trees and the local people have areas for stretching and exercise. The site is a wonderful cultural and religious place with active prayer and incense offerings. The art along the stone stairway down is worth seeing, but I am glad we took a different root up. Open and collecting a small maintenance fee from 7:30-4pm. There is a lot to see even if you do not go in the paid entry area.See more..
