4.0Shenyang Zhaoling Mausoleum(104 reviews) - Beautiful historical site set inside a sprawling park Tuesday: 8:30 AM - 6:00 PM Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins
This was our favourite of the places that we visited in Shenyang. An extensive complex of beautiful historial buildings. We spent a couple of hours wandering around here, and could have stayed longer - it is so peaceful. We found the buildings here even more impressive than the Imperial Palace. The park it is in, Bei Ling park is well worth exploring too, you could easily spend a full day between the park and the mausoleum. The entry to the park itself was 5RMB or entry to the park and mausoleum was 50RMB when we visited.See more..
4.5Hushan Great Wall(83 reviews) - Great wall of China Tuesday: 7:55 AM - 6:00 PM Ancient Ruins
just a short bus trip from Beijing CBD is the great wall of China. A wonder by all meanings of the word. Weather you appreciate History, Architecture or culture the great wall will simply wow and overwhelm you. Its larger that it looks on photos, higher and physically more challenging to climb that videos or photos can ever show. the market place at the bottom with food, artifacts and memorabilia's is a wonder o its own. You can never claim to have seen China if you never visited the great wall.See more..
3.5Huludao Xingcheng Ancient City(59 reviews) - Amazingly beautiful ancient walled city Tuesday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Architectural Buildings
Back in time to the Ming Dynasty and another walled ancient city. Nice views from atop the wall, where the guards/soldiers once stood. Truly awesome experience.See more..
4.5Jiumenkou Great Wall(21 reviews) - A Superb section of restored wall Tuesday: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM Ancient Ruins • Architectural Buildings
It is a little out of the way, and there is no public transport to get there, but worth the trip. It is basically a bridge section with a restored section heading from the river up the mountain. The wall was easy to walk and the view fantastic. There is also an elaborate Tunnel system built during the Ming Dynasty that is worth the walk. I strongly reccommend having someone with you who is fluent in Mandarin. We negotiated with a local man who hired out his 3 wheeled car and droves us the 40 minute trip from the Shanhaiguan Pass section of the Great wall and then waited 3 hours for us whilst we looked about. An Awesome experience!See more..

3.5West Fort Site(11 reviews) - Windy Tuesday: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Ancient Ruins
In truth I was here in April, at the beginning of spring. It was warm but very windy. Place a little boring. Entertained only wooden sculpture of the defenders. I do not think that the fortress was defended by such giants. It is also extremely funny angry faces of Japanese invaders in the panorama of the museum. Though in that way portrayed all enemies in all the museums of the world :))See more..
4.5Wunv Mountain(9 reviews) - Glorious - but what's with the nv for nu? Tuesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Ancient Ruins
February so the road in was icy - far too much for our van. We walked a couple of miles on the road to the park entrance (left at the fork) and none of the buses or chairlifts were running. Also no food to buy in winter - but the price is less for entry. The gate keeper was very helpful and was spot on in his estimation of 2 and a half hours to climb the steps to the "General surveying the land" platform and come back down, and gave us the map. Glorious view. Don't miss it. NB: Icy steps: we wished for our walking sticks and the ancient garrison ruins were under snow.See more..

4.5Hetu Alacheng(7 reviews) - An Audience with the Emperor Tuesday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins
This was the highlight of my visit to northern China. The historical compound is huge. The buildings and grounds are beautifully preserved and maintained. Our bilingual interpreter was excellent. As the birthplace of the Qing Dynasty, it is an historically very important site. The pageant was wonderful and it consisted of hundreds of well-trained actors and musicians. The costumes were beautiful and the choreography was outstanding. The high point was my private audience with the Emperor!See more..

5.0Ye Maotai Liao Dynasty Tombs(1 review) - 800 year old painted Liao Dynasty Tomb Closed now - 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Ancient Ruins
I added this to TripAdvisor as there are no reviews or information on this gem. The tombs are hard to find, and fairly remote - so I recommend using a taxi or street map on your phone. The tomb is just outside of Xuanhua's city walls. One tomb was open to the public, though I had to track down a bloke with a key as the ticket office was closed. I was allowed to take photos, but on hindsight, the photos will damage the art. I'll upload them all here so other people can benefit from my stupidity.
The tombs can be combined with a trip to Xuanhua's bell tower, drum tower, and restored western city wall. Jimingyi walled town is also nearby. I took a taxi from Beijing to visit all the above for 1,000 RMB. Even in peak season, a lot of Xuanhua's attractions close for lunch from 12-2pm.
Details from wikipedia - Xuanhua is home to a Liao Dynasty (960-1127) tomb with a colored star atlas painted with 268 stars including the sun, the moon and five planets—Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.See more..
