4.5Phoenix Ancient Town(2.045 reviews) - One of the most beautiful ancient towns in China Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Architectural Buildings
We took the flight from Beijing to Tongren airport for a vacation during the last Christmas holiday, we booked a hotel along the river with a fantastic view, since it was low season for the covid, it was very peaceful for the whole city. With a lot of well-preserved wood houses and stone streets, Fenghuang ancient city is very charming, there’s a lot of snacks you can try such as dry kiwi, ginger candy and so on. Don’t miss the night lights scenery when you are in Fenghuang, a lot of music bars & beer bar were closed when we were there. This ancient city is not very big, 2 hours will be enough for a visiting.See more..

4.0Mawangdui Mausoleum(32 reviews) - Fascinating mummy inside! Must Go Friday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Ancient Ruins • Points of Interest & Landmarks
An excellent museum that is newly renovated and reopened. The entire area is huge and very clean. This place is an actual archeological site that contained the tombs of three people from the Changsha Kingdom during the western Han dynasty (206 BC – 9 AD). It gives a detailed account from how this tomb was discovered and how the tomb was created given the limited resources people had in the past, from an archeologists point of view. It is so fascinating. What blew my mind was there is an actual mummy inside. Her body was so well preserved and beautiful that scientists could tell what was inside her tummy at her point of death (she led a good life). However, due to the constant exposure to harsh daily elements after it was excavated, it started to show signs of decay. Do visit this place to find out more :) Lastly, this place is FREE ENTRY!! This place is great for both young and old.See more..
4.0Junshan Island(24 reviews) - Looking for love? Friday: 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM Ancient Ruins • Islands • Cemeteries
Also known as the "Love Island", it is the largest island in Dongting Lake. A national AAAA scenic area, its attractions include Liu Yi's Well, Tombs of the Two Empresses, Feilai Bell, etc. It also has many flora and fauna especially a variety of bamboos, rare trees of red and green leaves and many birds. Interesting to visit but be prepared to squeeze into the boat for a ride out to the island and do some walking around the attractions. However, there are mini trolley buses to ferry visitors from one attraction to the other on the island. Worthwhile visit as we were told it was for good health and happiness too!See more..
4.0Dayong City(10 reviews) - Gorgeous quaint village Friday: 8:00 AM - 7:30 PM Ancient Ruins
This beautiful little village is at the Gateway to Zhangjiajie National Park. I definitely recommend staying here over the town of Zhangjiajie - it's around 40kms from ZJJ & has a much nicer feel to it. This village is rapidly expanding due to the popularity of the area. Restaurants, bars, boutiques are rapidly being built however it still has the village feel - for how long I'm not too sure. We stayed at the Pullman Hotel (see other review). Great local restaurants & local Chinese massage saved our legs from falling off !!See more..

The town dates back to 1135, when it was built during the Southern Song Dynasty. For six centuries it was the capital of the Peng Clan, and then abandoned in 1724 during the Qing Dynasty. Today, it appears to be a simple village.See more..
See more..
4.0Miyin Temple(4 reviews) - A terrible scam Friday: 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM Ancient Ruins • Religious Sites
They charged westerners in our group for about 11x the local price. When i learned about it, i can't say i was in a good mood but i still tryed to enjoy the visit... until the woman in the first temple whined because we didn't put any money in her urn. She told us in local language we were "Skinflint". I can't believe i got scamed and then called this way, i never felt so much offensed when visiting a place! Anyway this temple is kind of fake as it was greatly destroyed by japaneses during the war and got rebuild. Furthermore, there is nothing enjoying except maybe climbing to the top of the hill where it's located. People living around there are friendly and warm but i advise you to never visit this fake temple.See more..
4.0Changsha Tongguan Kiln Ancient Town(3 reviews) - Transport back in time via the archeological sites and natural kilns Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Points of Interest & Landmarks
The kiln has different excavations and is an archeological site. There are areas were ruined pots and ceramics were thrown out and buried under the dirt. These areas have been excavated and tell a tale of how frequently the kiln was used. The museum also indicates what each section of the overall kiln and area is used for. It has English which is great, and there is A/C inside. You also have the opportunity to see some finished items that would dry/fire in piles. The firing process is very different from what I've typically seen, as the items are fired using the heat of the sun and various inclines in the hills. The ceramics style is also one of the oldest ever. The items from a shipwreck were found off an Asian island, and made there way back to Europe, feeling their ceramics/China industry. There's also a gift shop in the kiln, but the items may be a bit more expensive than the nearby village.See more..
See more..
3.0Baiyun Reef(2 reviews) - actually not bad Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Ancient Ruins • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Historic Walking Areas I booked this hotel as running out of options as a last minute booking & no other hotels available, I was scared by some of the other reviews but actually I need not have been, it was safe with a 24hour concierge, the rooms were clean if a little basic (but this is Cuba-where european standards are not the same), I didn't have the breakfast as I generally avoid food in budget hotels, the location was fantastic for the malecon & the havana vieja (old town). My message is don't be put off by some of the reviews & I generally have found 7ideas good/helpful too. See more..
