Located on the banks of River Avon, this is considered one of England's most-visited Parish Churches and the site where William Shakespeare was baptized in 1564 and buried in 1616. In addition to Shakespeare's grave the 800 year-old church has some notable stained glass windows and 26 carved misericords dating from the 1400s. The high altar is one of the very few pre-reformation stone altars still in use in England today. Also of note is the sanctuary knocker on the inner porch door dating from the 1200s - anyone touching this could claim sanctuary within for 37 days. We welcome visitors daily, entry to church is free. There is a charge to see the grave of Shakespeare of £4 per person and £1 per child under 16 (free to preschool children) As a working church the times may have to change for services or other events. A beautiful place. English Heritage have really thought out the visitor experience, building stairs into the ruins so you can experience an impression of what the rooms would have been like and the views from therein. Informative displays and guide book. We felt that the entry fee was real value for money. The only tip I would give is that if you visit in winter, wrap up warm as the wind really gets through the higher areas! We went with our baby. We took a sling so we could explore properly- although you can get round a bit on the paths, to see it properly I would recommend other young families to do the same. See more..

  22. 4.5 Lord Leycester Hospital (591 reviews)
    - Absolutely fascinating
Temporarily closed - Closed until further notice Points of Interest & Landmarks • History Museums
    Lord Leycester Hospital image
The Hospital is a historic group of medieval timber-framed buildings dating mainly from the late 14th Century. Of historic significance, they represent one of the finest examples in Britain of medieval courtyard architecture. Clustered around the Norman gateway into the town, the 12th century chapel sits above it. For nearly 200 years this site was home to Warwick’s medieval Guilds. In the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, under the patronage of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, the buildings became a place of retirement for old warriors. These soldiers are known to this day as the Brethren and with the Master, still live within the walls of the building. They are a living legacy of 450 years. Each morning they meet and pray together the words their founder Robert Dudley set down. You can often see the Brethren in ceremonial uniform as they give tours through the buildings and gardens. Please note that The Lord Leycester is now closed until the end of June 2023 for major refurbishment. - Great place for keeping children, and adults happy.
    Monday: 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM Parks
    St Nicholas Park image
We had a few hours to spend and went to the park after it was recommended to us. We didn't get to explore all of it as we had an excited small child with us who wanted to try everything. It wasn't too busy despite being in the summer holidays. The cafe, small paddling pool, play area, small crazy golf, and small fairground rides are clustered together. With space to spill out for play ball games, or fly a kite as we did. The fairground rides operate on a card system that you put money on to then spend. Unfortunately there are things then interspersed between the rides which need £1 A palace to pester power. Looking forward to another visit to explore the rest of the park. See more..

  28. 4.5 The River Avon Trail (393 reviews)
    - Tranquil short walk along banks of the Avon at Stratford
    Biking Trails
    The River Avon Trail image
Start from the canal basin and walk along the right hand bank (not always possible to be right next to the river!) but the streets along there are lovely. Past Holy Trinity church and down by the Lucy's Mill (small lane on left past HT church) and cross back over the river. If you turn right after crossing the river (good view of Lucy's Mill from the bridge) there is the brand new marina complex (still under construction when we visited). Retrace steps along this side of the river, towards town and take time to sit on a bench and watch boats go past. There is a weir near here, so boats mostly turn around and go back upriver, although some navigate the lock to carry on down river. Walk back to the town and cross back over Clopton bridge. Lovely way to spend a few hours. See more..
