    - An interesting site to visit
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Whissendine Windmill image
We had spotted the windmill on a tourist map and drove up to have a look, expecting no more than to see the exterior. Soon after we arrived Nigel Moon appeared and offered us a internal tour. We spend the best part of an hour with Nigel whilst he talked about mills, wheat, nutrition and other matters. He was very engaging and is doing an amazing job getting the Whissendine windmill back into wind-powered operation. We felt a bit guilty keeping him away from his work but he was apparently a bit groggy following some dental work and we happy to take a break. However, if you are thinking of visiting a call to establish a convenient time would probably be appreciated. See more..

Rutland Water Nature Reserve (Anglian Water Bird Watching Centre) image
We had a warm, helpful and informative welcome at the Lynton visitor centre - well organised re COVID precautions - and saw 3 osprey before tea time on our first day at Rutland Water. At the end of the visit we noticed the mini season ticket, for 4 visits to the reserves over 10 days, and the volunteer helpfully let us top up to this from our day ticket. That let us have a return visit to Lynton & two x half days at the other reserve. Lovely settings, very peaceful, and we still didn't get round to all of the hides. One highlight was a heron, fairly close, demonstrating how to line up and swallow a trout. See more..

This was followed by handling the birds both static and flying to the gauntlet. Simon and Gill were extremely knowledgeable and passionate as well as friendly and welcoming. This is a very quaint village which has the old RAF Language School buildings at its heart - unfortunately they aren't quaint with their barbed wire fences and boring barrack style buildings.
