    Phu Prabhat Historical Park image
After driving (and get lost) for about 1.5 hr from Udon thani, we finally reached Phu phra bat historical park (when it was about to close). Entrance fee was 20 baht for Thai and 100 baht for foreigner. Here, we experienced a beautiful landscape, strange rock formations, traces of ancient civilization such as cave paintings and antique Buddha statues, and some local folktales (tragedy of U-sa). Very interesting site, pity that we had only 1 hr here. See more..

    - Little China in the center of Udon thani
    History Museums
    Thai-Chinese Cultural Center image
Ones can relax with Chinese atmosphere in this cutie place. Its architecture and design (Chinese pavilion with many Chinese lanterns and a carp pond in the middle) made us feel like we were in the mansion of wealthy Chinese in the era of Qing dynasty. My favourite thing is many short stories (with bas-relief illustrations) around the place that teach moral principles to their descendants. Museum zone displays the history of Chinese people (and their cultural) in Udon thani, while other zones are souvenir shop and cafe. "Phing An" cafe offers you Chinese tea, coffee, mantou (steamed bun with no filling), bao (steamed bun with filling). We also bought some fish food at souvenir shop to feed many carp in the pond. Moreover, walking through a beautiful Chinese garden in the back of the place will lead ones to an ancestor shrine. Many people worship this shrine for prosperity of their life. Absolutely Chinese / No entrance fee / Worth visiting See more..

  9. 4.5 Na Kha Market (6 reviews)
    - Part 2 of my 8 hour Thailand Adventure
Thursday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Flea & Street Markets
    Na Kha Market image
I had asked the guy at reception at the Nong Khai Resort for a taxi to take me to Udon Thani for a few hours to see a market, the sites, do some shopping etc. Easy, right. Well, no! The reception guy explained to the taxi driver and off we went. An hour later, I was dropped of here in a busy, hectic, noisy market. In Udon Thani, right? - no, no, no - it was 15 k north of Udon Thani, I later found out. The driver said this is the place, insisted, took my money and left.. So I spent a couple of hours roaming around, saw many stalls selling all forms of merchandise and generally passed my time. This day I did 41,119 steps. The hardest part was finding a person to take me back to the Thai/Laos border to meet the deadline set by the Thai border guards. After much searching, countless hand gestures and essentially a "bribe" I found myself back at Nong Khai and the border. The Thai guys were fine but Laotian border guards insisted I needed a second visa to get into Laos as the one I had was a single use visa. I got back into Laos safely, signifying the end of my adventure.... See more..

  12. 4.0 Nong Prajak Public Park (496 reviews)
    - Nicest Park in Udon
    Parks
    Nong Prajak Public Park image
A nice place to spend a few hours or have a picnic. Nicely landscaped with plenty of shady places to sit or stroll on the small island. Sizeable children's playground, toilets, even a tai chi area. There's a bike path that rings the park, not sure of the overall length, maybe around 3 km. Across the road along the east side of the park, there are many local restaurants (at the north end) and a whole row of massage shops (at the south end). Prices at these massage shops are lower than those near Central Plaza, so if you're on a budget you might consider walking over to this part of town. All together, this park is absolutely worth a visit for a relaxing morning or afternoon outing. See more..
  13. 4.0 UD Night Market (297 reviews)
    - Clean and Comfortable
    Flea & Street Markets
    UD Night Market image
Nice clean nighttime shopping experience, with lots of clothing, toys, and gadgets on sale. Many good choices for food as well, with some tasty looking seafood - purchase a food card at the kiosk. Also many sit down restaurants, including KFC, a pizza place, Starbucks, and more. Plus loads of take-away food options in the southern section near Lotus. There's even a large stage set up for live music, although in the two nights I wandered through all they had on was piped music and sports on the big video screen. Clean toilets too. There's some benches around, in case you want to just sit and enjoy the cool evening air. Great place for people watching in a clean and comfortable environment. I would also recommend the train station night market just across the street from UD Town. Much of the same shopping and food, but with a more local crowd. See more..

City Pillar Shrine (Udon Thani) image
This is quite a pleasant place to visit, located not far from Nong Prajak lake and park in the centre of Udon Thani.. There is plenty of areas around for parking. It is quite small but other than this shrine there are other attractions in the area to visit. It's particularly attractive during the night time. See more..
  16. 4.0 Sanjao Phuya Chinese Temple (63 reviews)
    - Interesting and beautiful Chinese Shrine
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Sanjao Phuya Chinese Temple image
Ten minutes drive from city center, this is a very interesting Chinese Shrine where you would have a chance to pay respect to 6 devines, the most people would like to visit and pay respect to may be "Poo-Yaa Shrine" which is believed those who pay respect and make a wish, that wish (only one wish) would come true. I could not remember the name of other 5 monks/devines because it is in chinese name but each would bless you prosperity, health and good luck. There is also a "9 turn Shrine" standing in the Nong Bua pond which connecting walk way that has 9 turns before reaching the pavillion. Our group were there in mid January just a week before Chinese New Year and it was almost full moon. The pavilion and the willow tree together with the moon reflects in the water looked stuning. Plus we had a chance to see the rehearsal of the Dragon parade which will be perform at Nong Prajak every year too. Nice to stroll around at night. (Close at 8 p.m.) Lots of parking space. See more..

  18. 4.0 Chaloem Phra Kiat Public Park (26 reviews)
    - Good park for exercise
    Parks
Chaloem Phra Kiat Public Park image
Udon doesn't have many options when it comes to public parks. This park is a good place to exercise. There's a bike trail and also a running/walking trial going nearly all the way around the lake, along with several exercise stations. I walked the circumference in about 30 minutes, at an easy pace. There are some shady spots for a picnic along the east side of the lake, and there are a few basic restaurants on the east side as well. More food sellers are located near the railroad tracks near the south entrance to the business park and there are at least two cafes inside the Thai Chinese Cultural Center. This park has improved over the years but could still use improvement. I saw very little trash on the ground, but the exercise equipment has seen better days and there appear to be people living on some of the park benches. Oh, and while you are here, the cultural center is quite an interesting (and pretty) attraction. Worth a visit. See more..
  19. 4.0 Wat Matchimawat (17 reviews)
    - Interesting to see
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Wat Matchimawat image
Nice temple in large grounds close to the city, not a spectacular as other temples around Thailand but what made this more interesting on the young monks working around the grounds sweeping etc. If you see the monks have a look otherwise it’s just another temple from a tourist point of view. See more..
  20. 4.0 Huai Luang Reservoir (11 reviews)
    - Really cool place
    Bodies of Water
    Huai Luang Reservoir image
The reservoir is just about 35 kms outside of Udon Thani at location 17.360640, 102.562991. You can follow the road to Kut Chap and then turn off just before the town to head to the reservoir. You can ride along the road at the top of the damn if you have a motorcycle and sometimes the gates are open and we've seen cars on the road. People fish from a landing on the other side of the damn. At the east end is a government facility and some docks where you can rent a pontoon boat for the day or hour. 100 thb per hour or 1000 thb for the day. You can fish from the pontoon boat or bring your own food and relax. It's not setup for foreign tourists so if you like to "live like the locals" you will love this, otherwise, probably not. See more..
  21. 4.0 Ho Chi Minh Educational and Tourism Historical Site (8 reviews)
    - Uncle Ho's abode in Thailand ...
    Spent 1-2 hours History Museums
Ho Chi Minh Educational and Tourism Historical Site image
The proverbial hidden gem. It sits a few kilometres out of town and private transport is recommended. There is an eclectic mix of objects on show, as well as an interactive audio visual display. It is a two (2) level museum with most of the material on the second floor. Beautiful gardens with monuments, trees, ponds and Ho Chi Minh's residence. It is great for history buffs like yours truly, but well worth checking out for all types of tourists (see my YouTube) visiting the Udorn Thanee province. See more..
  22. 4.0 Si Maha Pho Tree (5 reviews)
    - Bodhi Baum
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
See more..

  24. 3.5 Muang Udon Thani Museum (38 reviews)
    - My visit to the Udon Thani City Museum
    Speciality Museums
    Muang Udon Thani Museum image
The Udon Thani Museum is an interesting look at the history both the local area and this northern region of Thailand. Not all of the narratives are translated into English which limits their usefulness to those of us who do not read Thai, but in many cases, the pictures give context. If one is in Udon Thani for more than a few days, take a bit of time out of your schedule and visit this attraction. See more..
  25. 3.5 Udon Sunshine Fragrant Orchid Farm (31 reviews)
    - Beautiful and little known Orchid Garden
    Farms
Udon Sunshine Fragrant Orchid Farm image
I took my girlfiend, who is from Udon Thani yet had not heard of this Orchid farm. We spent under an hour walking around the rows of different and beautiful orchids. There was no fee to but there is perfume for sale that's made from the orchids. Not wanting to buy any perfume I left a small donation to the friendly staff member who'd been very welcoming. If you're in Udon Thani it's worth a short trip to the outskirts of town to see this, and I'm told morning is the best time to visit. See more..
  26. 3.5 Udon Thani Museum (21 reviews)
    - Interesting little museum
    Speciality Museums
    Udon Thani Museum image
It it a relatively small museum, and pretty scarce in content, but still worth the visit if you are around. Most of the the exhibits have English translations (some are a little wonky, though). Gives a nice history of Udon and a good firsthand look into the culture of Isan. See more..
  27. 3.5 Than Ngam Waterfall (19 reviews)
    - Skip it during rainy season
    Waterfalls
    Than Ngam Waterfall image
It's pretty far off udonthani town and was there as was visiting friends around the area. Had to trek for about 300m downhill prior to arriving at the 'falls' and will get to see many wild butterflies along the way up. But as it's the rainy season, water ain't very clear and the falls wasn't really that impressive to be honest. What can be done is that you could stop by at tesco lotus just before the entrance to stock up for drinks and snacks and go there for a mini picnic of sort. Ensure that you have proper food wear (slippery rocks) and ladies, please take note that there are no restrooms at the fall, everything will be back to nature with minimum privacy. See more..
  28. 3.5 Landmark Plaza (15 reviews)
    - A Landmark in Udon Thani
    Shopping Malls
    Landmark Plaza image
The Landmark Plaza is a compact shopping centre, that packs in plenty of variety to tempt both shoppers and diners, alike. You can explore this mall in air-conditioned comfort, across multiple themed floors (see my YouTube). The small food court adjacent to the cinemas on the top floor, provides some city views, as well as economical eats. See more..
  29. 3.5 Premium Outlet Udon Thani (8 reviews)
    - Very quiet
    Factory Outlets
    Premium Outlet Udon Thani image
The ‘Premium Outlet’ franchise seems to be the most quiet one I’ve been to so far. I think people here don’t wear these brands. There’s Nike Adidas Lacoste etc. Adidas short -70% cost 300baht, but no size to choose from. See more..
  30. 3.0 Udon Day and Night (38 reviews)
    - It is what it is, beer and brass.
Spent More than 3 hours Flea & Street Markets
    Udon Day and Night image
The night and day complex is a collective of bars offering an alternative to nutty park. The girls here will hassle you to go into their bars, whether you're with your wife or not, so if that's not your scene give it a miss. It's all about beer and brass, it's a carbon copy of other complexes in other cities. We always drink in a bar called Zan Zee Bar, the girls here are okay and we can have a peaceful beer at a reasonable price, play what music we like without being hassled. See more..
