   My wife had to attend a meeting in Sakon Nakon Province, so I looked up an interesting place to visit. Little did we know that we would find this place so interesting. The museum honours H.M. the Queen of Thailand's personal visit in 1970s to the home of one of the village's elders when H.M. the Queen graciously encouraged and supported their silk weaving so as to continue their traditional way of living. The home has been preserved and turned into a museum with photos of H.M.'s visit and quite a display of beautiful silk scarves and cloth by local elderly ladies. Nearby is the weaving centre of the village where one can see and learn how the silk is made, from the silkworms to a beautiful piece of cloth. Apart from using natural colours, these ingenious ladies finds a way to apply indigo (dark blue colour from plant of the same name which has made Sakon Nakon's cotton products famous) with their silk, through repeatedly apply the indigo, sometimes up to 8 or 9 times, to make beautiful indigo-dyed silk.    Pon the owner speaks good English so this is a local haunt for expats. Serves great steaks and has the usual beers. Nice and relaxing. Thai locals frequent as well.    The gardens - perfectly maintained are a real joy. The oddity of a guilded rock with a chedi on top, the use of many huge and ancient tree trunks. A decent cafe too. There is a shuttle bus up to the site itself taking the two-kilometer ride through the mountain forest costing 20 baht. But the crowds at the car park meant an hour's queuing where social distances were certainly not maintained but at least efforts were made to control temperatures.    Admittedly you don't find yourself in Sakon Nakhon for tourism but there are a few places of interest. None so much more than the Venerable Phra Achan Mun Bhuridatta Thera Museum. Located in the grounds on the Wat Pa Sutdhawa, behind glass screens are the final resting place of many of Ajahn Man's personal affects. Ajahn Man was a Thai Buddhist monk who along with his mentor were heralded as establishing a form of Buddhism through Thailand. Accompanying the glass screens the musuem provides explanations on plaques in both English and Thai of Ajahn's involvement and the use of the items. Very informative. Ample parking is under the shade of numerous trees and there are were four food and drink vendors in the forecourt. See more..

    The royal residence for the royal family is just 10km south of sakon nakhon city on route 213. When this palace is not in use it is open for the general public to visit. The palace has a large and very beautiful garden. It has many kinds of shrubs, flowers, trees and garden pathways. The many small modern buildings are also very interesting.     I visited Tham Pha Yol, a part of Phu Pha Yol National Park of Sakon Nakorn Province during my road trip from Khonkaen Province back to Bangkok. Tham Pha Yol is about 20km from the main road and about 300 stair steps to go up to the 3,600 years old stone cravings. I found It is worthwhile to walk up those steep trail as the stone cravings are a stunning sight for me. The nature and the air are refreshing. About half way up, there will be a split trail with an undecidable arrow sign, one to the left and another upwards. Take the upwards one to see the stone cravings. The left one is towards a small praying spot with a Buddha image. This activity is by the way not suitable for people with bad knees as the stairs are steep and narrow. See more..

    A country roadside restaurant complex with added attractions. There were four of us and we stopped here for lunch whilst touring the area. The restaurant is geared up for any kind of weather with an open air section, a rooftop diner with open sides and also a fully enclosed ground floor restaurant too. There are also two other non-associated eateries and a gift shop. We all had, very tasty steaks but there were plenty of other western and Asian dishes on offer.     Sakhon Nakhon is a long way from Cambodia today, but it was once a major outpost of the Angkorian Empire. Undoubtedly its finest relic from this time is Phra That Maria Cheng Weng, a sandstone tower on a laterite base. While it cannot compare to the great Khmer sanctuaries such as Phimai and Muang Tam, it is the best one in the province of Sakhon Nakhon. The highlight here are the exquisitely carved lintels, one featuring the subjugation of a kala (a kind of demon). The crisp carving is just exceptional. Also look for the small figures of ascetics carved at the bottom of the colonettes. Be warned, however, that there is substantial damage to the roof and this is a ruin rather than a complete temple.     Excellent place to have a picnic. The park has a footpath and cycle path, with places to stop and rest as you go round. Outside the park, you order your food and take a sitting mat, let them know where you will be sitting and they bring your prepared food and drink to you. Afterwards you leave everything and go and pay, they clear the mess away. The park has an exercise area for young and old and plenty of views over the water lakes.     We often visit here as my wife is a local. It's a place we come for a family picnic. Local knowledge gets us here, I would suggest that I would find it almost impossible to find without local help. It is nice and quiet, with nice views around the dam, but probably not worth going out of your way to find it. There are no vendors anywhere near, so you need to load the car up with everything you need.
