    TERRE DU SIAM VOYAGE image

    Surin Elephant Round-up image
Elephant is regarded as a Royal animal in Thailand. The former flag of Thailand actually has a white elephant as the main symbol. Every year for the past 50 years, Surin province has been hosting the “Elephant Round Up” to pay respect and praise this giant animal. The event is held in November and it takes place at the biggest elephant village of Asia. There are many interesting things to be seen, such as the Elephant Breakfast, the parade procession, the football match etc. It is quite a spectacular sight to see so many of these big mammals all together in one place. Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Prasat Si Khoraphum image
A few years ago, I spent two whole days in Angkor, loved it but felt ovewhelmed with the quantity of tourists. This little Prasat in Surin province is beautiful and well cared for. We stayed two hours admiring it and never saw another soul except for the gentlemen that guarded the entrance. A must do if you are in the neighborhood. See more..

    - Small but beautiful
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Prasat Ban Pluang image
Prasat Ban Pluang is only a small site but beautifully restored and still worth a visit. It is easily combined with a trip to Chong Chom Border markets. The ruins are a 11th -12th century Khmer sanctuary and surrounded by a U shaped pond with some beautiful carvings. Ban Pluang Ruins are about 30 kilometers south of Surin or 5 kilometers from Prasat town. See more..

Ban Tha Sawang Silk Weaving Village image
We got there from Surin by tuk tuk for 100 baht. When we got off the tuk tuk there were only shops with silk and clothes. We were disapointed because we would see process of making silk. We had to ask some children and they told us where to go. We have seen old women how they make silk by original technique. There was also place where com kurs for silk fabrics are prepared in big pots. Everything was very interesting and we did not to pay for entry. Great experience! See more..

    Phanom Sawai Forest Park image
It is off the beaten track so be prepared for that however it is well worth the trip. Many temples and a Big Buddha are wonderful to see and their is a nature walk as well. Was a great place to put a drone up and get some nice photos also. I wouldn’t recommend the nature walk on a really hot day unless you have lots of drinking water but if you are a keen bush walker then you will enjoy it. See more..

  14. 4.0 Wat Burapharam (23 reviews)
    - Temple as Old as Surin Itself
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Wat Burapharam image
Wat Burapharam is the grandest of the many Buddhist temples in Surin, in Thailand's north west. It is right in the middle of town, so is easy to get to. It comprises several temple buildings, and other buildings, including administrative offices and monks' dormitories. Wat Buraparam is about 200 years old, dating to the early Rattanakosin (Bangkok) period. Its founder was Phraya Surinpakdi Srinarong Changwang (Pum for short), who was also the founder and first lord of Surin. One of the temples houses the effigies of a famous monk who tutored His Majesty, King Bhumpol, when he was ordained a monk. The largest temple's walls are covered in colourful fresco panels depicting the life of the Lord Buddha. See more..

  20. 3.5 Elephant Study Center Surin (25 reviews)
    - Beautiful Elephants
    Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Elephant Study Center Surin image
Went to the Elephant Village today, it is about a 40klm drive from Surin city but worth the drive as you get to see the beautiful countryside. The elephants are all around the village, if you go into the main car park and keep going straight the road will take you to the back of the main village area where the elephant show is held each day. At the back of the main area is where many of the local people have their houses and also their elephants, worth having a look. The elephant show is okay but after 30 minutes we found it was enough. The elephants are very intelligent and beautiful. I had reservations about how they may train the elephants but did not see anything to worry about, yes the show is a bit of a circus but felt you need to put things into context, different country, different customs, different way to make money and survive and they are not making a fortune, this you can see from the houses they live in. It is well worth the visit. See more..
  21. 3.5 Ban Ta Klang Elephant Village (24 reviews)
    - Visiting local elephant Village
Spent More than 3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
Ban Ta Klang Elephant Village image
...taking the trip from Buri Ram via Satuek can be a bit difficult for foreigners as it is not well advertised...and little or no road signs. But that is actually great...so not swamped with tourists. Anyway entrance fee for foreigners is 100bath so it will not ruin your wallet. A 20min trip on an elephant is 200 bath... The show is quite OK...with the throwing of darts, kicking of football etc. A bit loud music and sound but that is Asia in a nutshell...☺ Well worth a trip and visit! See more..
  22. 3.5 Chong Chom Market (21 reviews)
    - Interesting market on Thai-Cambodian border
    Speciality & Gift Shops
    Chong Chom Market image
Chong Chom market sprawls near the Cambodian border in southern Thailand in Surin Province, about 70 km from Surin City. It is a bustling market, visited almost exclusively by residents of Surin Province and bordering Cambodia. It has a huge selection of items including hand made furniture, textiles, toys, antiques, fresh fruits and vegetables, clothing, bicycles, large wooden Buddha statues, and several food stalls. It is a great cultural experience. Go early: it gets hot by noon! See more..

  24. 3.5 Prasat Mueang Thi (9 reviews)
    - Do not confuse with Prasat Muang Tam in Buriram!!!
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Prasat Mueang Thi image
The photos posted here and some of the reviews are referring to Prasat Muang "Tam" in Buriram Provice near the towns of Prakhon Chai and Lahansai. Prasat Muang "Thi" is much smaller and much less interesting and is located in Surin Province about 20km East of Surin City. Although this place is still interesting in its own right. It is nowhere near as spectacular is the larger and excellent restored Prasat Muang "Tam" in Buriram. I would only make a trip here if you will be staying nearby for a while or if you are a very serious Khmer Temple buff. Do not come to Surin thinking you will see the temple that is depicted in the photos here. See more..
  25. 3.5 Khwao Sinarin Handicraft Village (3 reviews)
    - Expensive!
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Khwao Sinarin Handicraft Village image
We eventually found the silverware village, after our guide asking a number of local Thai speakers. There was a man doing the most intricate work involving tiny silver beads, but the necklaces and bracelets were VERY dear, especially if you only bought one. (Ask for a discount if buying two or more...) See more..
  26. 3.5 Prasat Yai Ngao (3 reviews)
    - A small village ( mooban) Khmer Prasat
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Prasat Yai Ngao image
Yai Ngao means lonely widow and according to legend was built by a women whose husband went off to fight in a war. The main site consist of two towers con a raised base made of laterite stone . The four sides of the prasat have Khemer artwork. This Prasat is located east of Sangkha off Highway 24. The site is free. See more..
  27. 3.5 Wat Salaloy (3 reviews)
    - Very Beautiful tempel in Khmerstyle
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Wat Salaloy image
The highlight of this temple is its building imitating the Khmer style with a red prang. It was built recently. The wihaan in front of it is quite small and very simple. We have not found any historical information about this temple not present in guides books even the ones provided by Surin TAT Office. I must say that like all temples Surin, Wat Sala Loy is a quite common temple despite its modern Khmer prang and the small group of golden Buddha statues at its right. See more..
  28. 3.0 Ban Buthom Basketry Village (7 reviews)
    - Hard to See the Weavers at Work
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Ban Buthom Basketry Village image
Ban Buthom is a village 14 to 15 kilometers east of Surin on the highway to Sisaket. In this day of automated assembly and instant plastic moulding of so many household appliances and utensils, it is reassuring to know that somewhere people still craft things with their hands, using age-old skills handed down from generation to generation. Having said that, it is actually difficult at Ban Buthom to actually see any basket weavers at work. Perhaps that is because it is a part time occupation when they are not busy with their rice fields. There is ample evidence of their handicraft in the numerous shops that line the highway, displaying a wide range of basketry, from chairs, to baskets, trays and other household appliances. Unfortunately I think the prices being asked are playing on the village's reputation as a tourist destination, and I think you can pick up most of these items at more competitive prices in almost any marketplace in Thailand. 29. 3.0 Muangmai Garden (1 review)
    - Water Park near Sangkha
Spent More than 3 hours Water Parks
First of very little or no English is spoken however you'll get by OK. Entrance fee 100 baht Adult and 80 baht child. 2 small pools with slides and 1 larger one with 3 slides and kiddies pool with 2 slides and spraying statues for the little-ones to climb over. Food and drink is served at your table, again if you don't speak Thai pointing and gestures work. Prices are cheap as this is mainly for locals. No lockers for your valuables but we left our bags by the table all day and no problems. Bear in mind all signage is in Thai so you need to work out via the motifs on the doors if your in the boys or girls changing rooms. As the day goes for the price it was fine, not too crowded as it was a Monday but the kids were on holiday. I also believe it is a resort as well with rooms available, perhaps I will check it out next time I go, only a facebook page to go by at present. See more..
  30. 3.0 Wat Thepsurin (1 review)
    - Thai art and architecture
    Monday: 7:00 AM - 7:15 PM Spent < 1 hour Religious Sites
    Wat Thepsurin image
If you are in Surin, Wat Thepsurin is worth a visit for its beautiful artwork and architecture. The ceiling is decorated with carvings of royal decorations and many famous and important Buddha images are enshrined here. There is also a royal crematorium which King Rama V ordered built as a crematorium for members of the royal family who had no special crematory pavilion on the grounds of Sanam Luang in Bangkok.
