  1. 5.0 Haad Chom Dao (10 reviews)
    - Rock of ages
Spent 1-2 hours Canyons • Geologic Formations
    Haad Chom Dao image
Love this place great sandstone rock formations and swimming holes San Phan Bok (3,00 rock holes) downstream is more well-known but this place. commonly Hat Chom Dao, is a bit of a secret, it's not that far to walk from the car park but the first part, which is a concrete road, is steep After that there are interesting swirl holes, rock shapes and delightful pools. We took so many photos. There is a recommended time to visit and that is the dry season from (November to April I think) however the river flow is changing because of 11 dams in China. Also it gets very hot especially March to May so to go early or later in the day is better, however we swam in the rock pools so the heat didn't worry us. If you walk another kilometer and a bit. you will come to a stretch of sand called Hat Chom Dao beach but generally swimming in the Mekong itself is a bit dangerous in fast flowing sections and very muddy so we stuck to the rock pools. Highly recommended See more..
  2. 5.0 Wat Pha To Ban Pak Sang (6 reviews)
    - Great place to visit
    Religious Sites
Wat Pha To Ban Pak Sang image
It's a good temple, locals hold it in very high esteem as its one of the oldest in the area, possibly a few hundred years old. Fantastic views of the Mekong River, overlooking Laos. Friendly staff, very welcoming of westerners as few make it out this far from Bangkok. Worth the visit. Great food within the temple area also, and extremely low cost. There are buses from Bangkok, take one of the ones that go to the Laos border. Lots of cheap resorts in the area to stay at, and you can find monkeys about 5 km away, but you'll need help from a local to find them. Well worth a visit, well and truly off the beaten path, no western tourists here at all. See more..

  6. 4.5 Wat Phra That Nong Bua (263 reviews)
    - Be sure to visit the assembly hall ( Viharn)

Wat Phra That Nong Bua image
If you’re interested in unique architecture and Buddhist temples this is worth a one hour visit to admire the various structures on the temple grounds. The 1956 tower ( chedi) is famous but I was impressed more with the interior of the assembly hall ( Viharn). The style is a mix of modern and “European” architecture with its exterior columns, huge circular glass windows and the decorative, painted ceilings with arches that reminded me of the historical cathedrals in Europe. -And the gold statues of Buddha was impressive. 7. 4.5 Pha Taem National Park (153 reviews)
    - Very nice park with interesting features
    National Parks
    Pha Taem National Park image
Entrance to the park, it has been said, is 400 baht for foreigners, and I don't care. Thai should be able to see their own stuff and the foreigner can be asked for support. Once inside you first stop off at Sao Chaliang, an interesting structure of huge rocks atop one another. From there you can take a short walk to enjoy the view and see a deep crack in the rock. Then you can drive a few kilometers to the visitor center to take a walk along the trail to see the rock paintings. According to one guide the first two are the most interesting, meaning an 800 meter walk. You can follow the trail back to the parking, total 4,1 km, but we did not do that. There is quite some climbing and an uneven path involved. The illustrations themselves are vague but still well preserved and an amazing 3000-4000 years old. Of course there is more to see and explore in the park, it depends on how much time you want to spend. The above will take about 1,5 hours. See more..
  8. 4.5 Sam Phan Bok (129 reviews)
    - Perfect late afternoon photo time.
    Canyons • Geologic Formations
    Sam Phan Bok image
Best time to visit is after 15:30. Not hot and beautiful sky. Super ig photo spots. We arrived from boats, suggested by local people that it is more suitable for my 70+ parents. Still a bit of climbing, though. Our boat guide was terrific caretaker and photographer, not afraid of getting up/down/wet for each photo spots.. ;)) Never know my parents would love to be models. They got their new profile pictures. I plan to come back again. Love this. See more..
  9. 4.5 Sirindhorn Wararam Phu Prao Temple (Wat Phu Prao) (94 reviews)
    - Beautiful view, cool breeze, fun experience at sunset and in the dark
Tuesday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks
Sirindhorn Wararam Phu Prao Temple (Wat Phu Prao) image
Got there 5 minutes before the sunset and wow, what a relaxing and mesmerizing experience. The sala with the Buddha glows an eerie red color and once the sun has set and it is dark, the fluorescent paintings in the back of the sala give it a fun and eerie feeling. Well worth the 1.5 hours driving from Ubon Ratchatani to see it. See more..

  11. 4.5 Wat Pah Nanachat (47 reviews)
    - A wonderful stay if looking for inner peace
    Religious Sites
    Wat Pah Nanachat image
This is no commercial entity and you shouldn't be going there unless you have an 'intermediate' knowledge and practice in Buddhism at least. The conditions are most austere and demanding. You are expected to work and participate in all the monastic events. After the initial three days, the guest monk will assess you and either permit you to stay longer or ask you to head home. That all said, this place has given me one of the most relaxing stays every, certainly the most memorable 10ish days abroad. It's very intense and spiritual and you have plenty of opportunities to elevate your own spirituality, including an excellent library and other resources. The monks rarely talk and expect you to look inside/insight for answers - it's not a retreat centre. Please, do bear in mind that you cannot do your tourist sightseeings and cheap/free stays here. This is really only for practicing Buddhists. And please leave a dana (donation) before you leave. See more..
  12. 4.5 Ubon Zoo (42 reviews)
    - Very nice and relaxing zoo to visit
    Zoos
    Ubon Zoo image
This zoo has a lot of interesting animals that are taking good care of with a lot of natural space. You will have to get around in a bus or a golf-car, that you drive yourself, which is great. It has a nice sample of tigers and lions, but you will not find all the animals that you would expect from a zoo. Strangely enough it doesn't have any elephants, but you can probably do without. I was impressed. See more..
  13. 4.5 Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival (31 reviews)
    - Thai art and culture at its best
    Cultural Events
    Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival image
Thailand is a country very rich in the arts. One annual festival which definitely showcase the skills of Thai artists is the Candle Festival, held in Ubon Ratchathani, in the Northeastern part of Thailand. The main event is the Candle possession which takes place on the full moon of July which marks the beginning of Buddhist Lent. You will see huge pieces of sculpture carved out of beeswax candles, decorated with Thai elements and often depicting characters from Thai and Hindu myths and folklores. There is usually a competition and exhibition for these candle sculptures and artists from all over the world come to Thailand to participate. It is a beautiful event that visitors should not miss. 14. 4.5 Wat Ban Na Muang (23 reviews)

    Wat Ban Na Muang image
Located only 7kms north east of Ubon Ratchathani this temple complex is certainly worth a visit. Plenty of photo opportunities. The pigeons certainly detract from your experience around the 'floating' boat temple but it is what it is. Allow at least a couple of hours. See more..
  15. 4.5 Heo Sin Chai Cave (15 reviews)
    - Spectacular hidden Buddhist Sanctuary
    Caverns & Caves
    Heo Sin Chai Cave image
Those visitors who thought this hidden gem was more spectacular in the rainy season were absolutely correct. The entry to the cavern is by a narrow path and steps through a corridor between massive boulders and and beautiful water shower streaming down ferny cliffs. On the other side of the cavern up a long flight of steps is an array of religious figurines... Monks, hermits etc Don't miss it See more..

    Khemarat Walking Street image
One of the greatest highlights of my trip to Ubon Ratchathani is Khemmarat Walking Street. On every Saturday, the Thai Folk Dancers will gather at Khemmarat Walking Street to give a high dance performance. The dance performance is truly unique to the Khemmarat district of Ubon Ratchathani, and such a lively atmosphere is only found here. I had a lot of great fun! See more..

  23. 4.5 ขัวน้อยบ้านชีทวน (2 reviews)
    - One of the biggest Buddhas in the area
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    ขัวน้อยบ้านชีทวน image
There is a beautiful Temple in Khuean Nai which we were told has one of the biggest Buddhas in the area. We thought we had to have a look and check it all out. We have to say that it is very impressive but it is in quite a remote spot and a little off the tourist area which equates to many parts of Isaan Thailand. Access by car was no problem and there is a free car parking area for the Temple. The grounds are well tended as is the water area in front which houses a show fountain. When you get close- the Gold Buddha is enormous. The inside is clean, modern and impressive with quite a holy aura about the place. Shoes off before entering as a mark of respect as a matter of course. Certainly I recommend a good look. See more..

  25. 4.0 Wat Thung Sri Muang (102 reviews)
    - A really beautiful old library building
    Religious Sites
    Wat Thung Sri Muang image
It's built on rough-hewn wooden pillars that are sunk into the bottom of a lotus pond, so that it's surrounded by water to protect the manuscripts it contains from termites and other insects. The architecture of the wooden structure with its pitched, vaulted roofs is perfectly balanced, modest yet completely sure of itself. The old mondop nearby has a large Buddha footprint and 150-year-old murals drawn from the Jataka Tales that are realistic and symbolic simultaneously. It's cool inside even on hot days. It doesn't take long to walk around, but it's worthwhile to sit for several minutes here and there and let the historic atmosphere sink in. See more..

    - A Truly Beautiful Place

    Wat Tham Khoo Ha image
Truly beautiful place. We visited here on way to the Mekong River hotel. I didn't know it was here but suddenly we saw these all white towers of the Temple gleaming in the sunlight and then this huge gong came into view. It looked like a fairytale. We walked around the site for a good hour but we couldn't unfortunately stay longer and go inside the Temple. There were some lovely views from here of the Mekong/Mun Rivers and it's a beautiful spot well worth visiting We walked around See more..
