  1. 5.0 Rocket Festival Yasothon (18 reviews)
    - An awesome experience to see.
    Cultural Events
    Rocket Festival Yasothon image
Bun Bang Fai is a rocket festival that takes place in the northeast of Thailand (known as Isan) and in Laos. Yasothon has the biggest event, with some rockets up to 9 metres in length, weighing over 100 kg. Entrants aim to impress judges by setting off beautiful rockets that go higher and farther than their competitors. It takes place during the May full moon, and is a way of making merit and an offering to bring a successful rainy season. It is a dangerous, exciting and extremely fun Thai version of a rain dance, with lots of music, dancing and a wonderful party atmosphere, set in the sleepy rural town of Yasothon. See more..
  2. 5.0 Wat Song Yae Catholic Church (3 reviews)
    - Supernatural and natural wooden Catholic Church
    Churches & Cathedrals
Wat Song Yae Catholic Church image
You don't have to be Catholic to appreciate this delightful wooden church. Roof, floor, walls and pews are all solid wood. The craftsmanship is evident with the beautiful concept and the Thai influence on Western church functionality. Stroll around the grounds until you feel at home: it is also a school, community centre and dormitory. A real pleasure in a surprising location. We took many, many photos in a visit of over an hour. 3. 5.0 Phu Tham Phra (1 review)
    - Off the beaten path
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Phu Tham Phra image
In the sticks outside Loeng Nok Tha city, this small cave/temple complex was a wonderful find. If you can find the place it is a great place to do a little easy hiking and see a small cave with some Buddha images in it. We inadvertently found some caves that monks lived in - they were all out at the time - and a rocky plateau were they were constructing a large Buddha. Bring your own water and snacks as there is no place on site to buy any. See more..
  4. 4.5 Phra Buddhabat Temple (2 reviews)
    - Solid Gold
    Religious Sites
    Phra Buddhabat Temple image
The Solid Gold Buddha is a must see. It is an extensive complex that houses the Golden Buddha and is worth the stop. The ability to climb stairs is a must. Shoe removal is required to go inside the temple - so wear slip on. Modest dress is requests - knees and shoulder covered, but not required.. They also request that you not step on the door lintel and not show the soles of your feet or point them towards the Buddha - a sign of disrespect. Photos are permitted in the temple. Second & third floor exhibit hours are 8 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Sunday. The Shrine of the Golden Buddha, located on the 4th floor is open 7 days a week 8 am to 5 pm. It is a high tourist area, so expect crowds. See more..

  6. 4.0 Phaya Thaen Public Park (36 reviews)
    - Worth a Visit
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Phaya Thaen Public Park image
I was glad to see the grounds taken care of and liked the promenade along the lake. The “frog museum” was interesting and I did enjoy the 15 minute theater presentation telling how the rocket festival in Isaan originated. The “naga” museum was informative and professionally presented. ( captions in English also). The two places are not overwhelming and nicely done. It is worth a visit if you like to learn new information. See more..
  7. 4.0 Wat Maha That (2 reviews)
    - Beautiful Yasothon Temple
Spent < 1 hour Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites
    Wat Maha That image
Wat Maha That is often said to be Yasothon’s finest temple, and it is certainly a good one. There are two main structures at this temple which are worth exploring. The first is a slender, Lao-style chedi which dates from the 18th century. It is white with gold paint on some sections. It has a very attractive shape and is locally venerated. The second attraction is a wooden Buddhist library in a Rattanakosin style. This is a very beautiful structure with an elegant porch, a kala (demon) over the door and precious Buddhist manuscripts inside. Entrance is free. See more..
  8. 3.5 Phra That Kong Khao Noi (13 reviews)
    - Worth a visit
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
Phra That Kong Khao Noi image
My wife told me about the story behind this pagoda & the reviewer who wrote about it under the heading "cool place with a neat back story" relates the story so will not repeat it. Needless to say it was well worth the visit before continuing our journey to Ubon Ratchathani. The location is just past Makro in Tambon Tat Thong. See more..

Called to visit the old Yasothon town while we were in Yasothon province, there are some lovely old buildings to see as you walk around but sadly most are in a poor state of repair & could do with some restoration work, it was interesting to see though. The best maintained building we saw was the Yasothon museum which looked well cared for. See more..
  10. 3.5 The Toad Museum (6 reviews)
    - A most interesting site
Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Monuments & Statues
    The Toad Museum image
Within walking distance from the Ban Kun Ya restaurant, the Toad Museum or Phraya Khan Khak Museum is the new landmark in Yasothon. It has been built in the shape of a sitting toad located on the banks of the Thuan River. The building is 5 stories or 19 meters in height. Whilst the museum displays an history of the province including Bang Fai rockets, legends and scientific content, display models & exhibit specimens of toads and information about 500 types of toads around the world. The toad sits in a landscaped area alongside a newly built "Dragon" and accompanied by the usual shops selling clothing, drinks and other items that may be of interest. At the time of our visit a group of school children were excitedly taking in all the exhibits. One takes of their shoes before entering and to reach the top level you may take the elevator or stairs. There is no charge to visit and it is air-conditioned. See more..
  11. 3.5 Ku Chan (2 reviews)
    - Ku Chan, a temple that attracts many people during Maka Bucha Day
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Ku Chan image
Ku Chan is a village close to Kham Khuan Kaeo in the province of Yasothon. The temple is well known as it contains a relic of Buddha. The place is crowded during the Makha Bucha festival. On that day, many people come to pray. At night, they turn three times around the main stupa with candles. The atmosphere on that day is very special. At the entrance of the temple, they organize a fair to celebrate the event. Close by the new temple, you can also see the remaining of an old Khmer temple (Prasat Ku Ban Ngiu) surrounded with jungle. There is a small shrine close the remaining of the main sanctuary. When driving from this Khmer temple, you can stop on the road to give bananas or corn to the group of monkey that stays close to the temple. See more..
  12. 3.5 Wat Sra Trainurak (2 reviews)
    - A Beautiful 17?18th Century Buddhist Scripture Building Worth the Visit
Spent < 1 hour Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites
    Wat Sra Trainurak image
Visiting this wat deep in the Yasothon countryside is for those who have the time and enjoy looking at various historical sites and architecture. The main temple ( bot) was just painted with an interesting color combination of primary colors, blue being the main accent with the predominantly white exterior. The design was definitely more “Laos” and the murals had an amateur touch to it which added to its uniqueness. Of course the old, historical monk library is the main reason to visit this site. ( be sure to walk around the pond) There are also a couple old teak wood buildings on the grounds. There those concrete tables and chairs under a shade tree where you can have a picnic or just relax enjoying the scenery and tranquility. ( btw The rural highways are in pretty good shape) See more..
