  1. 4.5 Sirindhorn Museum and Phu Kum Khao Dinosaur Excavation Site (107 reviews)
    - Walking with Dinosaurs ..
Spent More than 3 hours Speciality Museums
Sirindhorn Museum and Phu Kum Khao Dinosaur Excavation Site image
Well, I do not usually describe a 'place of interest' as a 'must-see', but I will make an exception when it comes to the wondrous Sirindhorn Museum in Non Buri, Kalasin Province, Isaan Northeastern Thailand. There is a variety of fields of science covered here, including ; geology, astronomy, evolutionary science, mega mammals and archaeology. However, make no make that stars of this show are the dinosaurs! As a retired science and social studies teacher I was pretty much in heaven for the entire duration of my visit to this fantastic museum. There are skeletons, drawings, words of wisdom, storyboards, educational displays and photo opportunities aplenty. Srindorn Musuem is located in Non Buri, which is just under a half hour drive outside Kalasin City and, I was fortunate to have private transport provided on the day of my visit. So if you find yourself in Kalasin, why not take a walk with the friendly dinosaurs and service team (see my YouTube), here ... See more..
  2. 4.5 Wat Phutthanimit (Phu Khao) (20 reviews)
    - A Grand Buddhist Park & A Left-Handed Buddha
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Wat Phutthanimit (Phu Khao) image
A very huge and peaceful Buddhist Park, with its most famous attraction being a approximately 2 meter long reclining Buddha that's resting on his LEFT hand (all other reclining Buddhas rest on their right hand), and that's said to be built in 1692. The rest of the park consists of a roundish bulb-shaped pagoda, an open ubosot with a huge Buddha statue, and a modern-looking wihan with lots of seated Buddha images and huge yellow-colored lotus-shape painting on its ceilings. And also lots of peacocks and peahens, and a handful of rabbits, to feed. See more..
  3. 4.5 Phu Faek Forest Park (20 reviews)
    - Walking in the Giants’ Footsteps
    Parks • Forests
    Phu Faek Forest Park image
This was not an enclosed museum with untouchable fossils encased behind a window shop I walked in the footprints of 140 million years old dinosaurs!! Where else can I touch and feel the bark and trunk of a 150 years old petrified tree? Only at Phu Faek Forest Park in Kalasin, Thailand. Never in my life I have felt so small and so privileged! I had goosebumps all over. Awesome experience! See more..

  6. 4.0 Phrathat Yakhu (18 reviews)
    - Low-key & peaceful place
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Phrathat Yakhu image
Unless you are a student of pre-Khemer Buddhist sites, this may just be a pleasant stop for a break as it looks like many other sites to the uninitiated. On the other hand, if you can read Thai or have a friend along who does, the site and little museum are quite interesting. The fact that it's not a significant site and is not along the path of any A-list or B-list itineries lends it an authenticity you won't find in more famous spots See more..

A rather hard to find wat in Issan but boy is it worth the effort. A unique rock carved (right handed sleeping) Buddha, spectacular forrest, and a terrific collection of Buddha realia. You may have to get the directions from a local but there are other sites in the area too! See more..
  14. 3.5 Dok Kate Beach (12 reviews)
    - Something to do
    Spent 2-3 hours Beaches
    Dok Kate Beach image
For something to do in the boring hot plains of Thailand it’s worth the dive. It could be a lot nicer if they cleaned up all the litter that’s all over in the parking area and walk to the lake. It was comfortable in the ample shade next to the beach. See more..

Strange place.... a viewpoint on the main road from Kalasin to Sakon Nakhon.. route 213... with a food stall (not sure it is always available) and toilets and a dangerous swing that goes out over a sheer drop! As you approach you will see 2 huge dinosaurs dressed in wellington boots... Worth a 5 minute stop for the view and a stretch of the legs I guess. See more..

    - Photo op for piece of history
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
Phraya Chaisunthon Monument (Chao Somphamit) image
Unless you are a history bub and is interesting in the birth of Kalasin province, the Statue of Phraya Chaisunthon is another statue/monument of any cities. Based on the history, he was the last ruler of the city (12th one) before the the country and cities in Thailand changed the governing body to city and municipals. Anyone has the last name of Na Kalasin is related to Chao Somphamit or Phraya Chaisunthon here. The Monument is situated downtown near the general hospital and the City Hall. When you go to Kalasin and have some time while walking in the inner city, have your picture taken and read about a piece of the city (if you can read Thai). See more..
