Walking with Dinosaurs ..

Well, I do not usually describe a 'place of interest' as a 'must-see', but I will make an exception when it comes to the wondrous Sirindhorn Museum in Non Buri, Kalasin Province, Isaan Northeastern Thailand. There is a variety of fields of science covered here, including ; geology, astronomy, evolutionary science, mega mammals and archaeology. However, make no make that stars of this show are the dinosaurs! As a retired science and social studies teacher I was pretty much in heaven for the entire duration of my visit to this fantastic museum. There are skeletons, drawings, words of wisdom, storyboards, educational displays and photo opportunities aplenty. Srindorn Musuem is located in Non Buri, which is just under a half hour drive outside Kalasin City and, I was fortunate to have private transport provided on the day of my visit. So if you find yourself in Kalasin, why not take a walk with the friendly dinosaurs and service team (see my YouTube), here ...

    Amazing and a must go
In northeast Thailand, there are 2 dinosaur museums - Sirindhorn Museum & excavation site for Phukumkao Dinosaur (in Kalasin-Sahatsakhan district) and Phu Wiang Dino Museum (in Phu Wiang National Park with a dinosaur park for recreation). The airconditioned and spacious Sirindhorn Museum is simply fantastic, with lots of easy to digest information and impressive exhibits. There is another museum (Phu Kum Khao Dinosaur Excavation Site) with a most complete excavated site bigger than the size of a tennis court in it. It is about 5 mins walk uphill after you exit from the airconditioned museum. Further up from this site museum, you will see a temple (under construction). Beside it is a white building where believers pay their respects to Phrakhru Wichit Dahatsakhun, an abbot of Wat Sakkawan, who first discovered large-sized bones of the sauropod in the temple's compound. In it, you can see exhibits of those bones he had kept. This subsequently led to an amazing discovery of many more fossils, including a t-rex (Siamotyrannus) of 160 million years old and a new found species of an ancient fish (Lepidotes), which is still in a perfect condition. We went up the 549 steps but were not impressed with what's up there. The signages are all written in Thai and seem to refer to view points, not excavation sites. Open daily 9am to 5pm except on Monday. Tel: 043871014, 043871394. Entrance fees for Thai/foreigners is only 40B/100B for adults and 20B/50B for kids. Very well worth. Keep the tickets cos you need to produce for entry to the excavation site. We really enjoyed ourselves and are going to visit the other dinosaur museum in Phu Wiang tomorrow. No need to go by tour if you are not in a rush of time. (1) Take a local airconditioned bus from Khon Kaen bus terminal to Kalasin, about 60-70B, leave every half-hourly starting 6am, duration 1 hour. Then take a van service at the Kalasin terminal at 50B, duration 20-30mins. Last service back to Kalasin is 4pm. Do not miss it as there are no other forms of transportation available. Or to book a 2 way with tuk tuk at 500B. (2) Take a van service from Khon Kaen bus terminal, departure time at 10.30am and arrive museum at 12pm. Need to check the return timing with the van service counter and don't miss the bus.

    Interesting destination
This place is a little out of town about half an hour drive. The museum is built on the place where dinosaurs were dig up in this area 2 decades ago. A good education trip with kid. Museum building design was like the one in Jurassic Park.
