   I had come to the Don Kai Dee village specially to hunt for a present for an important 50th birthday. It was a short train ride from BKK, then a tuktuk hired just outside the Maha Chai train station. I stayed at the Homestay they have in the tiny village, which is actually a small collection of artisanal workshops and retail points. The homestay was wonderfully quiet and peaceful, and the only thing disturbing my peace of mind was the number of cats in cages! I found more than I was looking for, and returned heavily laden, with all my spoils. Definitely worth a visit to see first hand the lengthy and painstaking, delicate painting often done with gold-especially if you love benjarong. See more..

    Salt fields can be found along the drive from Bangkok to Amphawa. Each plot also has a makeshift stall selling their salt. I used this opportunity to teach my kids about evaporation and how salt is made. I didn't manage to see salt being harvested but I heard that in the dryer months, it's a common sight.     As part of the coastal marine reserve, this is well worth a visit, if you are keen on fiddler crabs and mudskippers in a mangrove setting.There is an easily accessible board walk of about 1.50 kms -with 2 small suspension bridges, to take you into the mangroves. Apparently, I went at the wrong time of the day, and the wrong time of the year (no more migratory birds), but managed to see several collared kingfishers, some egrets, and a heron. Closer to the Centre itself, long tailed starlings, oriental white eyes, and the ever ubiquitous bulbuls could be found. The Mangrove Centre itself is quite hard to reach, and after my walk, the warm and welcoming Centre staff helped me with transport out. If you are fascinated by crabs and mudskippers as I am, then a whole afternoon would be well spent observing them. See more..
