    - Iconic Ancient Ruins
Sunday: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites • Monuments & Statues
    Wat Mahathat image
Possibly the most well known temple in the area due to iconic images such as the Buddha head enclosed by the tree vines. It's an amazing experience with the most tourists of the lot including school trips. There's light shopping and refreshments leading up to the temple entrance where 50B will get you in, or a multi-temple ticket for 220B will get in in 5 more. Well worth it The large open grounds are littered with stupas and prangs as well as other postcard quality photo opportunities like the Buddha tree. Many parts are off limits here due to increased footfall but it doesn't retract from the experience. If you're in Ayutthaya, you should not miss this temple. It gets crazy hot from midday, so bring a hat at least. See more..
  4. 4.5 Wat Yai Chai Mang Khon (1.404 reviews)
    - Beautiful but crowded
Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Religious Sites
Wat Yai Chai Mang Khon image
Probably the most famous place in Ayutthaya. Very beautiful but crowded, must come!! This temple was built 7 years after Ayutthaya was established as the capital of Siam in 1350 by King U-Thong. In 1592, Burma invaded Siam (Thailand) with 250,000 troops to take Ayutthaya. King Naresuan knew that his army, 100,000 troops, was severely outnumbered, and a straight fight would not bring victory. So during the war, he spotted the Prince of Burma, Mingyi Swa, and challenged the prince to a single combat duel on atop of their war elephants. The prince accepted the challenge and eventually that battle becomes the most epic Elephant Battle of Thailand history. Because of King Naresuan's victory, Ayutthaya was safe from being colonized from Burma. Then, the largest pagoda was built in this temple to be a victory memorial. However, 175 years later, Ayutthaya was taken by Burma in 1767 and all temples were destroyed. See more..

I had visited this beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Buddha during my full day sightseeing trip to Ayuthaya. This is an active temple and no entrance fee is required here. Sunday: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Historic Walking Areas • Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites
Wat Ratchaburana (Temple of the Royal Restoration) image
This temple is underrated. Found right next to Wat Mahathat, this temple is significantly more empty, and offers you an opportunity to explore the ruins and imagine how majestic it used to be in the old days. We went around sunset and were one of 10 people in the whole grounds-- this offered a great opportunity to photograph the temple without tons of people in the way. We also were able to climb up to the top of the temple, and could see tons of bats in the dark cove so make sure to look up and listen to their chattering! See more..
  11. 4.5 Wat Phutthaisawan Temple (111 reviews)

    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Wat Phutthaisawan Temple image
We hired a Tuk Tuk, for a day, to visit all the ruins and sites off the island. You will need some mood of transport to visits this site, across the river. We reach this place after visiting Wat Na Phra Meru, Wat Choeng Tha and Wat Kasattrathirat Worawihan and Wat Chaiwatthanaram. It is about 3km from Wat Wat Chaiwatthanaram. The thing of interest at this temple, includes a white Khmer-style pagoda, Buddha images in a courtyard, and reclining Buddha sanctuary. There are some residential buildings too for senior monks here. If you walk all the way in, there are some interesting ruins behind. We spend about 2 hours in this place to tour the whole compound. Entry to this site was free. There are sign boards, illustrating its history and significance. The place was not crowded. Best to have your own transport as it may be difficult to get one here. This site is also on the 2 hour river boat cruise. See more..

This place has many big and small boats of different types and usage on display but the main attraction is a room which has very beautiful models of different types of boats used by traders of different countries coming to the historic city of Ayuthaya. The old lady showing this room asked me to write down my feedback and give donation. See more..

hard to find but worth the trip just for the festive spirit and noise you may find yourself witnessing. . Apparently you go there and ask the Buddha for help and if it comes true you repay with a band, dancing and food offerings. It is a really inspiring place. We liked to give lotus and incense to the Buddha. - Impressive Chedi
    Religious Sites
Wat Phu Khao Thong (Golden Mount) image
Located next to King Naresuan Monument, this active temple is located a little outside of Ayutthaya center. Perhaps this is also the reason why less people show up here. I can imagine that the view from the Chedi over the surroundings must be great, unfortunately lack of time. Wonder what this Chedi looked like before getting his white paint... See more..

We walked to this site after visiting Wat Sri Samphet and Wat Phra Mongkhon Bophit, about 300meters away. It is located next to a lake. There is a ticket for the entry to this place and you can use your combi ticket of 220 Bahts here. The place was not crowded, as there were no visible, organised tour buses here. It is a pity, as this is a well-kept Wat with interesting ruins. There are sign boards illustration on its history and significance. As in most of the Wats, the main exhibit was a prang situated on a stepped terrace adorned with chedis. There are also Buddha images. The place is bound to be hot, therefore carry a hat, sun lotion and lots of water. We spend about 45 minits here. Transport is available to go back.
