  5. 5.0 Wat Chaloem Phrakiat Phrachomklao Rachanuson (91 reviews)
    - Drop by for some good exercise if you don't mind the high foreigner charges. Nice views
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites • Scenic Walking Areas
Wat Chaloem Phrakiat Phrachomklao Rachanuson image
Nice but feel the charges for foreigners as usual is unreasonably high. Due to that I feel it's ok to come here if you're in the area, but is it worth it to make a special trip? You park at the base, buy your entrance fees, tickets for the ride in the pickup up to the intermediate level. Get out the pickup then start walking. Lots of steep steps going up. The steps are well made. There's some signage along the way explaining things. All in Thai. You would think that after charging the foreigners much higher fees to enter the area they would at least take the trouble to translate the text into foreign language. View of the pagoda at the top is nice, as the pics you see. However the pictures of the top from the drones are much more impressive than your view from where you can stand. Would I go again? Probably not due to the charges. Been there done that. Would I go again if the prices were more reasonable? Only if I was in the area. See more..

  14. 3.5 Lampang Rooster (30 reviews)
    - Fabulous
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Lampang Rooster image
We set out in the hot afternoon sun to find this notable and important landmark. After two hours of walking to the location marked on the TripAdvisor map, the big chick was nowhere in sight. We asked the security guard at the Lampang Highway Maintenance Office where it was. He asked his friend while we petted his overly friendly dogs. His friend, “Bang”, knew the whereabouts of the cock in question and offered to drive us there. Gratefully we accept. Five minutes later we see the famous Lampang Rooster in all its glory. Drawing closer we notice the podium on which it sits is also a roundabout. I knew that if I was driving I most certainly would’ve crashed as I beheld the magnificence of this fine statue. The Rooster alone: 6/5. Because the location was wrong: -1. The danger of such a mind-blowingly beautiful statue being the centrepiece for a roundabout: -1. 4/5 stars, not bad. See more..

  20. 4.0 Wat Chai Mongkhon (15 reviews)
    - Gorgeous Burmese Buddha statue with a wonderful decoration.
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Wat Chai Mongkhon image
Although the over 100 years old Burmese temple seem to be abandoned at first glance (This is because there are only 2 monks dwell in the temple !), ones can't judge a book by its cover. Inside the old hall lies a very beautiful Buddha statue (resemble to the Mandalay famous "Mahamuni") imported from Mandalay surrounded by his disciples with the mosaic background representing angels and carved wood curtain with decorations representing significant events in Buddha's ordination. Moreover, visitor can make a wish to "Thep Thun Jai" made of white jade (of course, he was also imported from Mandalay). Many thanks to the abbot that kindly opened the main hall for us and provided some interesting informations about the place and the statues. ขอบคุณมากครับ See more..

Doi Khun Tan National Park image
I did a day trip from Chiang Mai today to the summit of Khun Tan. It Is a great escape from the city. I caught the 8:50 train from Chiang Mai, and got up to the visitor center by about 10. The total hike me about five hours, and that was including the looploop to the waterfall. The hike up it was fantastic, I did it on my own and had no concerns and the view at the top is spectacular. The loop to the waterfall wasn’t worth it in my opinion, at this time of year the water wasn’t running very fast and it’s a lot of extra uphill and downhill. Overall it was a fantastic day from the city, I got the 18:20 train back to Chiang Mai and was back to my hostel by 8 PM See more..

    Ho Amok image
This brick tower, rising over ten meters high, was part of the original city fortifications of Lampang. Built in 1808, with one side open, it has a three-story scaffold inside that was used to lift cannon and shot up to the battlement on top. The tower was probably intended as defense against a possible Burmese invasion. But the Burmese had been driven from their last stronghold in Chiang Saen in 1804 and did not march into northern Thailand again. So the tower was never used, but never demolished, either, and has been kept as part of the city’s heritage. See more..

By road it’s about 18 km east of the turnoff from the Route 11 highway. The gleaming white bridge lies in a scenic valley backed by mountains, next to a small, quiet village, with a golf course on the other side of the stream. Beside the bridge a cluster of bamboo restaurants and coffee shops stands on the bank. The little private museum is owned by uncle Manit, a former voice actor and Thai herb expert. Filled with great passion, he was very proud to present us his collections, such as many vintage Thai movie posters and old movie projectors with film reels (8 mm/16 mm/35 mm). He provided us many interesting facts about history of movie projection in Thailand, then demonstrated the use of these vintage equipments by activated them to project a film for us. He also kindly gave us a hand of bananas to eat during enjoyed "Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness", a 1927 black-and-white silent film (and the first Thai's pseudo-documentary film), which he performed a live dubbing of all characters. Moreover, as Thai herb expert, he also explained us the knowledge about Thai herbs. The museum was free entrance. However, we bought some Thai herb products to support the place. Highly recommend! 50. 5.0 Pha Gate Painting - Prehistoric Cliff Rock Paintings (1 review)
    - Very interesting site.
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
Pha Gate Painting - Prehistoric Cliff Rock Paintings image
There are 3 main attractions in this site. 1. Prehistoric paintings on the vertical rocky cliff dated back over 3000 years ago Take a stroll along an 800 metres convenient path watching prehistoric paintings on the cliff (hard to see and imagine, but there is a guideline on the board at each point) with forest and mountain view. Don't forget to apply sunscreen. 2. Chao Por Pratu Pha shrine Pay respect to the loyal warrior "Iron hand" who fought Burmese army to his death at this position (to make his king escaped) about 300 years ago (like in the movie 300 but in this case only one !). Legend has it that he used his bare hands at a shield (iron hand, that's why) and fought to his death with his upright body leaned against the cliff and his hand still held a sword. What a great guy. 3. Local market This is a little market where Yao people sell their products (especially herbs and spices). Worth a visit. See more..
