This is a huge natural and man made reservoir not far from Laixi. It take about 15 minutes by car to drive there form Laixi centre. In the summer there are many street BBQ's and activities going on around the lake in the evening and at the weekends. During the cooler months then it is very quiet with just the resident restraunts open for business. If you lke a gentle cycle then this is a nice place to cycle around as the perimeter road goes all the way around the lake with no obstructions. Many places to stop off at and have a look and if the water level is low you can see the ruins of one of the villages that was flooded to increase the size of the reservoir in the mid 1960's I think when the end of the small valley the lake is in was blocked so the water level could be increased. If fresh fish is your thing then there are a number of small and big restraunts to each along the lake side. The water in the lake is crystal clear and this is relected in the taste of the fresh fish. Its very very good. And you get to choose the fish you want in all the restraunts.... The surounding land is mainly farmed but there is some development at one end of the lake with new appartments, shops and a hotel. There are a few small shops along the perimeter road but mainly it has been left undeveloped. It is possible to swim in the lake during the summer. It is refreshing as most of the lake water comes from underground water sources (cold springs and underground river). It is crystal clear all year round and supplied most of the drimking water for the Qingdao area. In the winter it freezes over as it get very cold. Sometimes down to -10 degree C or lower. This makes for some wonderful views as the lake freezes over and the snow comes. If you are in the area and visit Laix this is a place worth going to to see and maybe have lunch or dinner. See more..
