Every Wednesday and Saturday an interesting large food market opens up in Kuah next to the Golden Sands hotel. The majority of customers are locals enjoying the vast array of Malaysian dishes and a stroll with the family in the warm evening after sundown, so it isn't at all touristy. Even some of the vendors seem to be non professionals offering the best from their home menu and explaining willingly in English about the dishes and their ingredients. Fresh exotic fruit like durians, mangoes and lychees are also sold at reasonable prices. In daytime the low buildings next door are the place to shop in Kuah, tax free is widely advertised, but I bought cotton batiks, shopping bags featuring Van Gogh paintings and nice flip flops with rafflesia flowers See more..

Wanted to try kuih karas. Found this small stall where this friendly lady was making it on the spot. Rm 10 for whole container. If not mistaken her stall was on the 3rd/ 2nd level. Kuih karas tasted good not so sweet and knowing that it was made fresh made it even more worthwhile. See more..
