The Leistikow Strasse memorial commemorates the former Soviet military counterintelligence central remand prison that was once located here. There are few historical prisons so authentically preserved. While the mass cells and facilities in the upper floors reveal the conditions in the 1970s, the primitive basement cells with their crude wooden benches testify to the privations endured by prisoners well into the 1950s. Numerous inscriptions carved into the walls by detainees from that time speak of isolation and desperation as well as resilience. The permanent exhibition is illustrated with photographs, endowed with historical artefacts and equipped with media stations that reveal the prison’s story within the wider drama of the Cold War. Fifty biographies have been unearthed, showing just how many different people became inmates, from Nazi-era perpetrators to spies – both real and falsely accused - and Soviet army deserters. As one of my interests concerns old agricultural tractors, I wanted to visit this museum because I had read somewhere they had a nice selection of makeshift made tractors during the DDR era. This proved not to be correct, but they have a very nice selection of standard tractors made in the DDR, plus a rare FAMO tractor and two Lanz hot bulb tractors all dating from 1938-39 instead. To my pleasant surprise they also had four combined harvesters in an outside shed : a Claas MDB, an early Soviet type, an early DDR type and an early Fortschritt. This really made my day ! See more..

Dominican monastery in Prenzlau, founded in 1275, can be found on south-east side of what use to be old town, near the Steintorturm tower. I said, what use to be an old town, because not many of original, old buildings, in Prenzlau's city centre left after heavy fights of 1945. Prenzlau Abbey is, probably, one of the best preserved examples of medieval monastic complexes in northern Germany. Of course, it wasn't built in the course of just one night. The oldest parts of the monastery, St. Nicolai Church and eastern wing were erected in 13th century. In the following, 14th century, southern and western wings were added. After construction of two, new wings, rebuilding of the cloister took a place, results of which still can be seen in its vaulting. Disbanding the monastery that followed Reformation caused that the monastery buildings began to be used for other purposes like poorhouse, gaol, retirement home, boarding school or hospital. Those changes were mirrored in alternations made between 16th and 19th centuries. Today, Dominican monastery walls are house for Kulturhistorisches Museum, library and town's archives. For around £4 one can walk about monastery's compound, become familiar with the museum collections and try to find the traces of the past hidden here and there within its walls. Taking pictures inside of the monastery require extra fee. Right next to the museum's entrance, there's KlosterCafe where one can grab a cuppa of tea or coffee, or have some light meal. Prenzlau Abbey it's nice place with very friendly staff, located away from the main routes. After this short trip to the north-east, I really started to like Germany. See more..

This beautiful old church has been sympathetically restored and part of it is now the archaeological museum. This has well laid out, easy access and very interesting finds and displays can be enjoyed by all ages groups. Definitely a place I would like to revisit soon. See more..

Das Heimatmuseum an sich war sehr interessant und man konnte sehen, dass viel Liebe und Engagement drinsteckt. Hinter dem Museum befindet sich ein Freilichtmuseum mit kleinen Hütten, welches das Leben der Slawen im Spreewald vor rund 1000 Jahren darstellt. Die Führung war sehr lehrreich und spannend! Zu guter Letzt konnten wir (auf Anfrage) auch die Dorfkirche Dissen besichtigen. Wir waren viel länger da als geplant und können das Museum nur uneingeschränkt weiterempfehlen! See more..

Etwas blauäugig stolperten wir in das NaturParkHaus und gingen ganz begeistert. In jeder Ecke lässt sich draußen etwas entdecken, erkunden, ausprobieren, betrachten und mittendrin kam dann die freundliche Dame vom Empfang und teilte uns mit, dass wir nun auch in die Ausstellungsräume könnten (begrenzte Anzahl, ihr wisst schon weswegen...) Wir konnten mit Tieren telefonieren, abtauchen, lauschen, lernen, kombinieren. Der Vierjährige hatte genauso viel Spaß wie Omi und Mama. See more..

This Museum is indeed in quite a remote area but this is the area of Europan Bat in Germany. Its a free entry and you can donate whatever you like to give to the box of donation. It very educative and kid-friendly. The most impressing was the Eis Keller or ice room where the most endangered Bat species love to stay during the winter time. This place is so amazing with cold temperature in summer and this area full of this kind building which makes Bat feel homy. See more..

Es ist ein einmaliges Erlebnis hier Garten und Architektur zu genießen. Dies ist ein Geheimtipp vor den Toren Berlins, denn in die Hauptstadt sind es nur 60 Minuten. Für Liebhaber historischer Anwesen und Gärten ein muss.

Dieses Museum habe ich schon als Kind geliebt. Die Heimatgeschichte von Perleberg und Umgebung interessant dargestellt, ist einen Besuch wert!! Am liebsten würde ich gleich hier übernachten, so anheimelnd ist es. Besonders schön ist das Biedermeierzimmer, die Bauernstube und der Kaufmannsladen. This is one of the few watchtowers still remaining to be visited from the GDR period. It was built right next to the wall, just outside of the city of Berlin. The most amazing thing, apart from the possibility to inspect the interior equipment of this watchtower is that there is always (so I was told when I called) a person there one can ask questions. The most interesting conversation ensued as the guide on duty was a former GDR soldier who served precisely along that stretch of border between the two Germanies, during the Cold War. I am not sure whether he can speak English but if you are able to converse in German, you will get a real first-hand experience of what it meant to serve in the Eastern German Army in the area of the Wall. It is slightly cumbersome to get here: first you have to go by U-or S-Bahn to Spandau (and this is easy!) and then you have to catch the Bus 136 until the stop 'Am Oberjaegerweg'. The problem is that during the time 10 to 12 in the morning, only one bus per hour gets that far, as many buses (they usually arrive every 10 minutes) will end their journey beforehand. Therefore, I had to wait for half an hour before a bus got me here, but it was worth every minute of the wait, the conversation with the former GDR soldier was priceless! I am sure there is a website which will tell you the exact departure times of Bus 136 from Spandau, so you caould avoid the wait. See more..

One of the main focal points of the exhibition is the industrial history of the city from 1936 and onwards. On an area of 1600m² different exhibits and models manufactured in the various production lines of the vehicular industry of Ludwigsfelde are on display. From the first IFA W50 built in 1965 to the L60 in 1988, multiple commerical vehicles and airplane engines manufactured in Ludwigsfelde are shown in the exhibition hall.
