    Alte Nikolaikirche image
The ruins of Old St. Nikolai's Church in Prenzlau that's truly impressive view. The sheer size of it made us stare at it wordlessly. At least for a while. Surrounded from every four sides by low-rise apartment blocks, the ruins stands on a small stretch of land, on the rectangular parcel lined by Richard Steinweg, Diesterweg, Schulzen and Stains streets, just few steps away from Dominikanerkloster. Well, maybe just few minutes of walk away of Dominican monastery. The Alte Nikolaikirche was built of local fieldstones in form of basilica church for margravial court in first half 13th century, and it was the first parish church in the city. Two brick towers, of which only one remained, were added in 14th century. St. Nikolai's Church, same like the other early churches in Prenzlau, shows elements of the transition period from Romanesque to Gothic style. The times of Reformation brought destruction to the church. The nave fell into disrepair already in 16th century and, finally, was demolished in 1769. Of the two towers, the northernmost, has collapsed in 1648. Only atrium with portico and huge gaping hole in place of rose window above it and southern tower has survived to our days. Not much, someone could say, but the size of what left, in my opinion, is, still, truly impressive. There's no admission fees required to see the ruins. One just have to make some effort in order to find them. See more..
