    It wasn't planned. When I found out that Potsdam is a world heritage site about 45 min from Berlin, I was tempted to make the trip but was afraid it would messed up my schedule. But I asked myself, would I get another chance if I miss it and whether I can strech my time and physical condition. I am so glad now that I went ahead, it is one of the most beautiful places I have visited and a nice breakaway from the hussle bussle of Berlin city. Must see the Sanssouci Palace and Neues Palace. Take a bus to the former, walk thru the Sanssouci Park and you will also see Oranerie Paradiesgarten and Chinesisches Haus. Then exit at the Potsdam university to catch a bus to Luisen Platz where you will be able to cover Dampf-maschinenhaus, Brandenburger Tor, Nauener Tor, Hollandisches Viertel and Nikolai Kirche. Have ur lunch at one of the cafe if u fancy before taking the tram and head back to the terminal. See more..

    Neues Palais and its surrounding building are at the opposite end of Sanssouci Park and a 2km stroll through the garden from Sanssouci Palace. While the palace were the private quarters of Friedrich the Great, these quarters here were for guests and entertaining, so are much larger and more impressive and pretty incredible, especially the marble dance hall and the shell grotto but also Voltaire's guest chambers. There are some 300 rooms inside, only 30 were available to view and they were spectacular. They rotate those depending on time of year and state of restoration planning which is a $20 million project to finish in 2028. The whole estate is awe inspring and well worth visiting. Bring goid shoes. The stairs to the second floor are steep without guard rails and there is no elevators, so no way to visit for the elderly or walking impaired. See more..

    We visited this Palace in August 2019. Visits are by tour only and we arrived to the last tour of the day. It is really pleasant to wander through the park to arrive at the Palace. While waiting for the tour, we marvelled at the painted verandahs. We were only 8 in total on the tour, which was in German but we had the audio-guide. We don't often take audio-guides, but found it really well done and interesting. As always, you had the option to have more detail if you wanted for many items, but the basic info was sufficient. The Palace is beautiful and there is a lot to see. We believe this well worth visiting. See more..

    This rococo lake view Prussian palace is beautifully restored to give visitors an idea of what it was like to live in an 18th-century castle. The detailed renovation has been completed in exquisite detail. You walk through room after room of incredibly designed salons, all with different themes and lovingly restored furniture. Don't miss the Muschelsaal (Shell Salon), a room decorated with seashells. Don't forget to look up at the ceilings, one has an astrological motif and another painted in a dizzying, almost vertigo-inducing design.     I visited this enchanting place on a summer day. It is only open from April until October and during the week end and holidays. It helps to check the website, if it is open. http://www.einsteinsommerhaus.de/index.php?id=458 Two nice guys gave a tour through the house, where Albert Einstein lived during several summers. It is were he also met with other scientists and intellectuals. It is a small house, but with impressive history. It is still today used for workshops and winners of the nobel prize meet there. I actually had the chance to sit on a chair, where nobel prize winners had sat before. We combined the visit of the Einstein summerhouse with a visit of the small town Caputh, which is very nice, since it is near the water. See more..

    Vereint Kultur und historisches Flair in schöner Umgebung. Der Park sah seit Jahrzehnten nicht so gut aus. Das Schloss ist zwar nicht mehr mehr allgemein zugänglich, aber wird von "Grund auf" saniert. Ein Besuch lohnt allemal. Ortsansässige können übrigens ohne Eintritt die Ausstellung besuchen.     Das 500jährige Reformationsjubiläum hat bestimmt mit dazu beigetragen, dass die Sanierung des Klosters und die Museumsgestaltung und -ausgestaltung jetzt so weit ist. Man wird außerordentlich freundlich begrüßt und geleitet. Wir waren beeindruckt von den leicht verständlichen Ausführungen zur Kirchengeschichte und speziell des Klosters. Wer darin nur vage Kenntnisse hat, der wird hier durchaus angeregt, sich weiter damit zu beschäftigen. - Die Schnapsbrennerei im ehem. Siechenhaus ist hochinteressant anzusehen!     Für uns war es eine sehr interessante Führung durch diese riesige Bunkeranlage. Man kann noch allerlei Dinge bestaunen die es damals dort gab und von dem Bunkerteam wieder hergerichtet wurde. Es werden auch die Aufgaben und Abläufe des Bunkers bestens erklärt. Insgesamt eine tolle und interessante Sache. Festes Schuhwerk und entsprechende Kleidung sind zu empfehlen, da es mit der Zeit doch recht frisch da unten wurde.

    Die Burg Falkenberg ist mitten im Markt Falkenberg am Fuße des Waldnaabtals. Idylisch gelegen und beindruckend schön restauriert. Leider konnten wir diese nur von Außen besichtigen da eine Führung vorher gesondert organisiert werden muss. Dies werden wir aber noch gelegentlich nachholen. Mit dem Besuch dieser Burg sollte eine Wanderung durch das herrlich idylische Waldnaabtaal und ein Vesper in der historischen Gaststätte Zum Roten Ochsen verbunden werden. See more..

    Im Belower Wald bestand hier vom 23.-29.4.1945 ein provisorisches Gefangenenlager der SS für Insassen der KZ Sachsenhausen und Ravensbrück, die vor der heranrückenden Roten Armee auf sogenannte Todesmärsche Richtung Nordwesten getrieben worden waren. Die Häftlinge lagerten unter freiem Himmel, eine Versorgung gab es kaum. Hunderte KZ-Häftlinge überlebten dieses Lager nicht.

    Die Gedenkstätte besteht aus dem Denkmal von 1975, dem Belower Wald, der Open-Air-Dokumentation und der Projektwerkstatt mit Information.
    Für die Freiluftdokumentation sollte man zum lesen Zeit mitbringen.
    Im Wald sind etliche Bäume mit roten Winkeln gekennzeichnet. An diesen Bäumen findet noch Lagerspuren: Einschnürungen vom Stacheldraht, Einritzungen mit Buchstaben, Zahlen und Zeichen von den Häftlingen sowie großflächige Abschälungen von Kiefernrinde, von der sich die Häftlinge notdürftigst ernährten. Vertiefungen im Boden künden noch von den Erdlöchern der Häftlinge.     See more..

    I travelled to Gollenberg (Stölln) in order to see an old - and meticulously restored - Interflug IL-62 that is on display here at Otto Lilienthal museum. If you are an avgeek you will have a great time here! The aircraft, and a small museum thats right next to it, contains tons of Interflug memorabilia: old timetables, uniforms, operating manuals, in-flight magazines, service items, and even crew bags and briefing sheets. For aviation history buffs and airline geeks its a fascinating display of Interflug's 40-year history. I personally loved it and I would recommend it to anybody who shares my passion. The museum has a cafeteria as well, where you can sit back in old Interflug aircraft seats and enjoy a snack (they accept cash only). Another section of the museum (near the bus stop) houses information on Otto Lilienthal and the story of his genius aviation engineering work. Now, getting to Stölln on public transport from Berlin is possible, but its an extremely long journey (2:30 - 3:00 hours) involving a train and 2 bus transfers, followed by a 20 minute walk to the IL-62. On a bright side, the scenery and the small villages that you go through are quite fascinating! So, basically its a day trip from Berlin and the cost of the return ticket is about 20 euro, which you can buy at any DB/train ticket office. A faster and more convenient, but pricier, alternative would be to rent a car and drive to Stölln, which takes about 1:30. See more..

    Der imposante Gedenkturm erinnert an die Schlacht von Großbeeren, in der am 23. August 1813 die französische Armee von den preußischen Truppen unter General von Bülow geschlagen wurde. Dadurch wurde eine Besetzung Berlins durch die Franzosen abgewendet. Wenn man die 137 Stufen erklimmt, hat man von der Aussichtsplattform bei gutem Wetter einen schönen Blick bis Berlin.

    Die Scheunenwindmühle in Saalow (südwestlich von Zossen) ist ein Unikum und ein einzigartiges technisches Denkmal, gibt es eine Windmühle mit diesem Wirkprinzip nur einmal auf der Welt.
    Erdacht und erbaut wurde die Mühle ab 1864 vom sächsischen Landwirt Johann Traugott Schubert aus der Nähe von Dresden. Für den Antrieb von Sackaufzug und Mahlwerk sorgen 2 turbinenartige Windräder, die durch den durch die Scheune strömenden Wind angetrieben wurden. Gemahlen wurde Getreideschrot für die Fütterung der Tiere des Bauern. Windangetrieben wurde die Mühle bis 1914 und dann bis 1958 mit elektrischem Antrieb.

    Einen Abriss verhinderte danach der DDR-Denkmalschutz,. Nach 1980 wurde die Mühle mit Unterstützung des Kulturbundes der DDR von Sachsen nach Saalow in Brandenburg umgesetzt und bis 1995 wieder aufgebaut.

    Leider nur von April bis Oktober und nur Sonntags geöffnet. Gruppenführungen können aber mit dem Mühlenverein vereinbart werden.     See more..

    in der Zeit von 1871 bis zum ersten Weltkrieg befand sich hier in Spremberg der geografische Mittelpunkt des Deutschen Reiches! Ermittelt wurde dieser Punkt 1872 durch den Geografen Heinrich Matzat als Mittelwert der am weitesten nördlich, südlich, östlich und westlich gelegenen Orte des damaligen Deutschen Reiches.
    Wenn man sich die heutige Landkarte anschaut, stellt man fest, daß dieser Punkt heute fast an der Polnischen Westgrenze liegt. Hier werden die gewaltigen Gebietsverluste Deutschlands durch die beiden Weltkriege deutlich.
    Ein Besuch dieses Gedenksteines regt dazu an, sich ein wenig mehr mit der Deutschen Geschichte zu beschäftigen.     See more..

    Steintorturm, also called Schwedter gate tower, is even more impressive than Stettin Tower from the opposite, northern, end of Prenzlau's former city walls perimeter. Mentioned first time in 1306, Steintorturm use to be a part of city's gate complex that was mostly demolished in second part of 19th century. Built on strong foundations made of field stones, with small buttresses at her base, Stein Tower, unlike her counterparts has kept square shape at her entire height. Above the tall panels mimicking narrow, pointy arched, Gothic church's windows there is a row of decorative niches in form of coat of arms shields, that runs around the top of the tower. Now just plastered up, in the past, these niches probably bored paintings of actual coat of arms. Although, buttresses makes the tower look a little clunky, even squat, still, it looks pretty impressive. Currently, tower is used by a group of local astronomers as a public astronomy observatory, and seat of history association in Prenzlau. Tower is open for visitors on weekends only. The tower stands on the same street as the nearby Dominican monastery. See more..

    Stettin Tower Gate in Prenzlau it's a massive, medieval tower gate that can be found at the end of the northern stretch of old city walls that runs along Mauerstrasse, and ends abruptly where it meets Stettin Strasse. Built on square plan, like in case of Mitteltortum, Stettiner Tor changes, at the half of its height, shape from square to circular one topped with battlement and conical roof. Judging from the remains inbuilt into its walls, Stettin Tower was probably a part of bigger defensive complex that, like in many such a cases before, was partly demolished during 19th century due to the city's development. Also, which is characteristic for Prenzlau's historic buildings constructed in Middle Ages, Stettiner Tor is partly made of field stones. In one of her plastered panels the sign of "Chrismon", or "Christogram", the sacred monogram, made of bricks, can be seen. Impressive building. See more..

    Mitteltortum, Middle Gate Tower or Tower of Prenzlau is one of few remains of old Medieval fortifications that use to surround city of Prenzlau back in Middle Ages. Located just few minutes of walk from Prenzlau's Marienkirche, Mitteltortum is interesting example of Brick Gothic defensive tower, mainly, due to its curious shape. Massive tower built, probably in 13th century, on square plan have foundations, and partly walls, made of fieldstones. In about one third of her heights the tower is narrowing and changes shape to irregular octagon, on base of which closed machicolations were constructed. Just above the machicolations tower changes her shape one more time into cylindrical one. Tower is topped with battlement and pointed roof in the shape of a cone. A small gatehouse adjoins the tower. Judging from his shape, gatehouse has been rebuilt back in 19th century. Tower of Prenzlau was inspiration for Oberbaum Bridge towers in Berlin. See more..

    Hexenturm - Witches' Tower, it's a round, Gothic, defensive tower found in the eastern stretch of partially preserved medieval city walls, that runs along the edge of Froschteich Park, right behind the Amtsgericht Prenzlau (District Court in Prenzlau). Name of the tower indicates that, in the past, the tower was used, among the others, as a prison for women accused of witchcraft. Built in 1495, 25 m in height, tower have five storeys of which two bottom were used as a dungeons. The round tower was typical structure with battlement in the times of its construction. Such a towers can be found all over the countries that, in Middle Ages, used bricks for construction of defensive structures, therefore, to be honest, Hexenturm is nothing extraordinary, but proximity of the park makes it a nice place for walk in hot, summer day. Tower was closed for visitors, but we couldn't find any information if that was temporary or permanent. See more..

    Bei einem Spaziergang oder einer Wanderung durch den Gränert muss man unbedingt durch den Diebesgrund laufen. Hier soll in früheren Zeiten der Räuber Habakuk Schmauch sein Versteck gehabt haben, der schwer beladene Kaufmannszüge an der nahe gelegenen Magdeburger Heerstraße um ihre Habe erleichterte.
    Ein Knüppeldamm führt durch die feuchte Senke. Viele Pflanzen der Feuchtgebiete kann man ganz nah betrachten. Ein tolles Naturerlebnis.     See more..

    Die Kirche ist architektonisch nicht so auffällig, da sie noch nicht so alt ist. 1820 wurde die erste Kirche während des Grossbrandes fast mit dem gesamten Dorf zerstört und musste komplett wieder aufgebaut werden. See more..
