Dominican monastery in Prenzlau, founded in 1275, can be found on south-east side of what use to be old town, near the Steintorturm tower. I said, what use to be an old town, because not many of original, old buildings, in Prenzlau's city centre left after heavy fights of 1945. Prenzlau Abbey is, probably, one of the best preserved examples of medieval monastic complexes in northern Germany. Of course, it wasn't built in the course of just one night. The oldest parts of the monastery, St. Nicolai Church and eastern wing were erected in 13th century. In the following, 14th century, southern and western wings were added. After construction of two, new wings, rebuilding of the cloister took a place, results of which still can be seen in its vaulting. Disbanding the monastery that followed Reformation caused that the monastery buildings began to be used for other purposes like poorhouse, gaol, retirement home, boarding school or hospital. Those changes were mirrored in alternations made between 16th and 19th centuries. Today, Dominican monastery walls are house for Kulturhistorisches Museum, library and town's archives. For around £4 one can walk about monastery's compound, become familiar with the museum collections and try to find the traces of the past hidden here and there within its walls. Taking pictures inside of the monastery require extra fee. Right next to the museum's entrance, there's KlosterCafe where one can grab a cuppa of tea or coffee, or have some light meal. Prenzlau Abbey it's nice place with very friendly staff, located away from the main routes. After this short trip to the north-east, I really started to like Germany.See more..
