  1. 5.0 Issan Rum Distillery (58 reviews)
    - One of the Issan Region's hidden gems
    Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Distilleries
    Issan Rum Distillery image
The Issan Rum Distillery is a compact, casual and comfortable place, one can check out, on the outskirts of town, while in and or nearby Nong Khai. I chose to do a brief technical tour of the alcohol manufacturing and storage facilities, before sampling the local product. As a former bar manager (as well as a continuing student of alcoholic beverages ...) myself, I found the short but sweet back story information, provided by the friendly hosts, to be informative and entertaining. I am also glad that I chose to do a 'taste tester' set, 'lakeside' by the small bar overlooking the dam, too. And if you are wondering, how was the sugar cane spirit (?), well I am happy to advise that I did purchase a bottle for takeaway, so yes, I do feel it is a high quality (and quite strong) white rum. A great little spot (see my YouTube), that I reckon can be positively categorised as another one of the Isaan region's many hidden gems. See more..

  3. 5.0 Baan Suan Massage (1 review)
    - Great Massage, Clean Facility
    Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 11:00 PM Spas
This is a great option for massage. It may be a bit more expensive than the average ordinary massage shop in Nong Khai, but it really is worth it. Still a good value, at 490b for a 2 hour traditional Thai massage. I did not try any of the spa treatments, so I will offer no comment on those. I will say that the place is very clean and comfortable with comfy silk massage pajamas. Quality of the massage was top notch. I've had traditional Thai massages all over Thailand, and this place is high up on my list of excellent massage shops. They have branches in several cities, and I plan to visit Baan Suan when and where I can. See more..

    Scenic Walking Areas
    Lan Phaya Nak image
Built about 2 y ago, damaged after a heavy storm and repaired last year, this monument is a nice thing to see, the most in the evening when the color and water fountain is going on. In front of a Chinese Tempel, on a large promenade, people are having some exercise, just hang out with the kids, or eat some street food in big quantity available here in the early evening. A nice place to pass some relaxed moments. A must see i would say. See more..

    Nung Massage image
If you want a great massage and terrific value for money then this is it. Nung's massage is situated on Rimkong Road behind the Nong Khai Waterfront Promenade. When we visited inJuly2014 it wasn't named but you won't miss it. It's the white building and is the only massage place in that immediate area. The business is owned by Nung who is assisted by her good friend Noy. They are lovely people. My wife and I spoiled ourselves and returned three days in a row. I cannot speak highly enough of Nung's massages, she works tirelessly. You will not be disappointed by her service. Equally my wife was as happy with Noy. You are able to talk at ease with them or just relax and lap up the treatment. We believe in them so much that we've made the effort to have them listed on Trip Advisor so more travelers can enjoy their service and company. They deserve to be busy and successful. Please support Nung and Noy. They and you deserve it. See more..

Very nice and characteristic market. Well located and very well organized. Here you can find everything from shoes to eating! There are many well-placed and attractive stands. There are also good restaurants inside. The prices of the goods are very attractive and not expensive. Nong Khai Aquarium image
An excellent user-friendly aquarium, that is compact in size and, curious in its personality. A happy place, where one can truly get 'up close and personal', with a variety of aquatic animals, large and small and, at a comfortable eye level, at an easy pace. There is ample parking, spacious, smooth movement throughout the facility, plus heaps of; observation, discussion, educational and photo opportunities, all along the way. In my opinion, the Nong Khai Aquarium is one of the area's longest standing and premier tourist attractions (see my YouTube), well worth the short drive out of the city centre to experience its diverse wonders. 15. 4.0 Tha Sadet Market (5 reviews)
    - The Usual Miscellany
Spent 1-2 hours Flea & Street Markets
    Tha Sadet Market image
Tha Sadet Market is a long covered concourse on the banks of the Mekong in Nong Khai. Its stalls mainly sell cheap men's, women's and children's clothing and shoes. But there are also stalls selling electronics, tools, household utensils, watches, cameras, glasses and sunglasses, herbs and spices, and ticky-tacky tourist souvenirs. Most of the offerings are pirated, as reflected in the cheap prices. So if you want a Gucci handbag, get one here, but do not pretend it is the Real Mccoy. The stalls here start opening around 7.30 am, and remain open until late at night. See more..
  16. 4.0 Asawann - Shopping Complex 1 (2 reviews)
    - Good for a short visit
Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 9:00 PM Shopping Malls
Asawann - Shopping Complex 1 image
Asawann has those familiar brands for shops, restaurants and banks like in any Lotus or Central Plaza in Thailand such as Watsons, Yayoi, MK, Banana, Huawei, Krungsri, etc. but they are not under one same roof. You need to walk out from one building to another. From my memory there is only ground floor, no second floor. It’s good to visit at night when local restaurants might close when those chained restaurants still open. We ate and bought some snacks there. Across the street is where you can take a van to Udon Thani and they depart every hour. The signage say they go to Thai - Laos Friendship Bridge too but I didn’t try yet. See more..
  17. 4.0 Emil Massage Wellness Therapy (1 review)
    - Tolle Thai-Massage, etwas versteckt
    Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM Spas

  21. 3.5 Wat Phra That Khlang Nam (5 reviews)
    - Another significant landmark

Wat Phra That Khlang Nam image
The Chedi that you see is the replica of the one that was washed down many years ago. During the low lide, you can see the old one in the middle of the river. Locals and Thai visitors come to worship the place jsut like many others. As a visitor who has nothing to relate to the place, just come by and read about this landmark. At night, the place around here is vibrant with street vendors (food) on and off the promanade. See more..

  25. 3.5 Nong Khai - Thanaleng Shuttle Train (2 reviews)
    - Can’t miss it. It’s required.
    Public Transportation Systems
Nong Khai - Thanaleng Shuttle Train image
No crossing of the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge would be complete without a stop at the Thanaleng Train Station. In fact, it’s mandatory. Here you will encounter fine socialist bureaucracy, a waiting room that has been closed for years, and a toilet. Bring a black or blue pen, and US dollars. Maybe toilet paper and soap, depending on your plans and how long you wish to stay. Make sure the money is crisp and new. Bills with tears or ink marks are summarily rejected. (The Lao money looks like it has lived under a bridge for a year, but yours must be new.) Thai Bhat are also accepted, but the exchange rate for USD is much better. (Thai money generally looks like it has been under a bridge and slept on by incontinent feral cats for a year. Good luck with that.) Passport photos are no longer needed. No need to rush for position in line. Locals use window 2. Foreigners use window 1. All passports and non-crumpled currency are collected and batch processed. Just get to know your fellow travelers and have fun with it. You will get a gorgeous full page visa in your passport, then are left to your own arrangements. Hopefully you did this ahead. There are goats. See more..
