Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Bridges
    Bern Bridge image
The first bridge of the city Originally, the pont de Berne would have been supported by timber trestles. The bridge as it stands today dates from 1653. The central stone pillar and deck were replaced in 1853-54,and its roof in 1885. The three bridges in Fribourg Old Town (Bern, Milieu and St-Jean) all date from the mid-13th century, almost 100 years after the city was founded by Berthold IV of Zähringen (1157). Before the pont de Berne was built, travellers had to cross the Sarine by boat. In those days, the water lapped against the cliffs on which the former Augustine monastery overlooking the car park stands. In 1340, the bridge was sawn down to ward off an attack by encroaching Bernese invaders. The pont de Berne is the last remaining covered bridge in Fribourg. See more..

  23. 4.5 Murten Tourismus (58 reviews)
    - Nice Day Trip
    Visitor Centers • Sightseeing Tours
    Murten Tourismus image
This little town is often overlooked by American tourists who set their eyes on the more well known towns of Switzerland. This charming medieval town still has its city walls and gives you a full day of entertainment. You can visit old churches and walk the medieval towers if that’s your thing, and just stroll the main streets and do a little shopping. I think it best to learn a little of the history, its ties with ancient Rome. There is even a nearby Roman arena you could visit. The physical beauty of the town is best taken with a panoramic view of the nearby lake. See more..

  25. 4.5 Pont du Milieu (44 reviews)
    - A medieval bridge, one of 17 bridges in Fribourg
    Spent < 1 hour Bridges
    Pont du Milieu image
THE MAIN ARTERY OF MEDIEVAL FRIBOURG The pont du Milieu also dates from the latter half of the 13th century. In those days, it provided an access route from the Auge peninsula to the Planche-Inférieure, and further on to the Commandery of St John (founded in 1259), Maigrauge Abbey (founded in 1255) and the Bourguillon leper colony (pre-1252). It also made it easier to get to Marly and the Upper Singine, tucked away behind the cliffs you see in front and to the right of you. Back in the day there would have been a gate tower, thereby ensuring that the district of Auge was protected at either end. The original timber structure was replaced in 1720 by a stone four-arch humpback bridge, in keeping with many bridges built during that time. See more..

  28. 4.5 Berntor (38 reviews)
    - the old gate towards Berne
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Berntor image
The walled-in town of Murten had two main entrance gate towers. One to the southwest, towards Avenches, which has been torn down, and one at the northeast, towards Berne, which today is one of the attractions of beautiful (and touristy) Murten. It is at the end of the pedestrian Hauptgasse with its arcades on the sides. The history of the tower goes back to the 13th century, but the actual building in a baroque-neoclassical style dates from the 18th century, thus from a time, when such towers were not really necessary anymore. From this period also dates the big clock, one of its main features. It is worth to look at the tower from inside the old town as well as from the outside. See more..
